In addition to what Matthias said, there is also Virtual Fields an example of 
them can be seen here

I believe this may be of some help. Note Virtual fields are not saved as part 
of the Layer, but as Part of the active project. You could though make them 
permanent when you’re finished, by creating a new field and using the virtual 
field as the source.

I must acknowledge my complete lack of the ESRI tools, so I am left with the 
first hits I find in an internet search to guess what it does exactly.

My first guess is, that "default value" configuration is what you are looking 
for. There is support for QGIS expressions - which opens up a wide variety of 
possibilities.
