When you log out, you have pick to login to Unity 2D. Other options are to trying installing XFCE, KDE or another window manager. Another way to test, try booting OSGeoLive from a usb or DVD to see if it has the same problem. I have problems with window management in Unity. Usually QGIS's window opens in a different workspace and it gets messy when I have QGIS main windows + 2 or 3 print composers. Without any provocation, QGIS started harlem shake on my computer. I don't know what to do. Can only turn it off by pressing Alt + F4, or restart the computer.
