Would it be too difficult to set up a separate qgis-dev directory on

For Ubuntu/Debian it just needs a different deb package, with a
different name and different target directory. Should work.

[Qgis-user] QGis and developpement version

2013-03-17 Thread Petit frère
Hi,

On various forums, when I asked some question, I have got more and
more answer like that: you can do this with the development
version of QGis 1.9... but you can't with the current version...
It is quite frustrating! Why QGis don't do like some other opensource
software, propose the both version on their website (the current and
the development one with a message which inform that it is not a
stable version)? I know that I can found this development version,
but I find it quite a shame to have to looking for this version and
not to find it on the main website, especially for software that
tries to be very friendly user.
User of several opensource software's, I find it quite a shame.

So why it is not easier to access to the version 1.9, even if it is
not accomplished? or why some people do reference to this version,
while it is not available on the official website? It will soon be a
year since we are with the 1.8 version … And for some other
installation on linux computers, the default version is the 1.7,
there is some steps before getting the current version. So I know
that can seem very easy for some advanced users, but for some others
(I saw that around me), it is not so easy, and it is pity that for
these persons there is not more updates with some improvements which
runs well on the development version.

Just to share my point of view, don't worry, I'm not angry against
QGIS, which I find excellent, it's just a reaction to the answers on
many forums that refer to this version.

Cheers.

Re: [Qgis-user] QGis and developpement version

2013-03-17 Thread Ramon Andiñach
Hi Oni,

(I'm sure I'll be corrected if I get anything wrong).

It is on the website. 1.9 is the development version, aka master. Not sure what
sort of computer you want to put QGIS on, so try one of these:
Win: http://hub.qgis.org/projects/quantum-gis/wiki/Download#13-Master
Deb: http://hub.qgis.org/projects/quantum-gis/wiki/Download#213-Master
Ubu: http://hub.qgis.org/projects/quantum-gis/wiki/Download#263-Master
Mac: http://hub.qgis.org/projects/quantum-gis/wiki/Download#42-Master

I'll expand on the linux bits a bit.
1. Unless you compile from source, you can not have 1.8 and 1.9 on the same
computer. I understand you need to pass some nonstandard settings through to
make it work.
2. If you do use the deb or ubuntu testing packages,
 a) note the bit about them being for testing purposes, and
 b) uninstall everything relating to your old QGIS before installing the master
packages or expect the unexpected.
3. I don't use the other distributions. so I'm not clear on how master works on
them. Probably, see 1.

You are right that the installation is described on the website, but it
is far more complicated than the QGIS Lisboa 1.8.0 standalone installer.
For non-tech people, the OSGeo4W setup procedure is a kind of blocker.

Same for ubuntu: If you did not use ppa's before, you will only get the
old 1.7.4 version, or 1.8.0 with ubuntugis. I tried the suggestions for
Master on the website, but finally got around with this tutorial:

http://qgismalaysia.blogspot.de/2012/04/ubuntu-1204-qgis-1990-installation.html

Unless you compile from
source, you can not have 1.8 and 1.9 on the same computer.

Having a Windows laptop, I had no problem installing Lisboa standaolne
and OSGeo4W Master in parallel. To use Ubuntu, I installed Virtual Box,
one machine with the stable Ubuntu 12.04 and QGIS 1.8.0 from ubuntugis,
and a second with Ubuntu 12.10 and Qgis Master according to the tutorial
above. But it took me several weekends to get all running. That's not
quite user-friendly, I think.

This is not really right. Using OSGeo4W you can install 1.8 and 1.9 and
run them at the same time. I'm doing it now. In fact I tell people to do
it all the time in order to test stuff for us.
