might be an idea to port this into the main source?
or do you (Alexander) have in mind to add more advanced functionality?

anyway don't let this stop you from building this kind of nice plugins

Hi!

I wanted to write that directly to pcav but as I see that this topic is
right at the right time and position ..

What about creating something like:
http://www.esri.com/library/brochures/pdfs/arcgis93-functionality-matrix.pdf
during the pisa hackfest? So that every new functionality can be seen in
one sheet?

(And probably we can take this sheet to compare ourself with arcGIS ;) )

I guess devided into core and plugin section that could be real helpful
for people using qgis and searching for designate tools.

Any volunteers? (except myself)

Excellent idea. I'm in.
Should this be perhaps included as an appendix to the User's manual??

It has to be decided whether it will be in the appendix of the users

Hi,
in any case consider that comparing qgis with the arc* functionality
matrix will need at least two columns, in order to specify if the task
can be accomplished by qgis alone and/or trough the grass plugin. It
would be also interesting to specify if in qgis a particular task can be
done by qgis core or trough a 3rd party plugin.

But it actually works?

I tested it on a small line vector and in the best case qgis freezes.

If the project is in wgs84 and the vector is not I get a crash (qgis

I'm using trunk on linux here. And yes, it is working.

And trying both plugins on the same (multipolygon) project, I see some
differences and issues ...
- DPSimplify actually simplifies your data on the fly, and gives you the
option to either save it to a new shapefile or not (nice !)
- DPSimplify also reports the number of vertices reduced, which gives
you the option to lower or higher your tolerance (nice)
- DPSimplify seems to work only with line and polygons data (not multi*
)? (at first there was no layer in the dropdown, untill I added a (non
multi)polygon layer)

- DPSimplify the about-box raises an python exception here

Don't know when you add layers with a different projection to a map
(like you do: the plugin has to do the 'on the fly projection' itself I
think... this is a though case anyway)...

And to make myself clear: I do not want to discourage Alexander to
develop the plugin!! Because if I'm correct, the current vector-menu
stuff is actually cpp ported from the former python plugin as well.
I think the python plugins are a nice example and way for prototyping
stuff to either (but not nessecarily) being ported to trunk, and
hopefully raise interest for people to add functionality to qgis.

Richard

Re: [Qgis-user] Re: [Qgis-developer] announcing DPSimplify

2010-03-05 Thread Carson Farmer
Hello list,

I'm a bit late coming into this discussion, by I thought I might be a
good place to make a few comments:

New plugins that add new functionality are always very welcome,
however I would also like to encourage plugin developers to have a
look at (particularly core plugins) existing plugins, and if they find
something they would like to improve/replace, to do so! I don't have a
lot of time to update fTools, but improvements are always welcome, and
if they are added/applied to fTools directly, then the whole QGIS
community benefits from the improvements/changes without having to
install another plugin (and without duplication in the eyes of the
user).

And to make myself clear: I do not want to discourage Alexander to develop
the plugin!! Because if I'm correct, the current vector-menu stuff is
actually cpp ported from the former python plugin as well.

Just to clarify, most of the fTools functions have still not been
ported to cpp, and in fact anything running from fTools at the moment
is still using the original Python implementation. So again, I would
encourage developers of fTools functionality to try to include them
with fTools so that they can be installed by users by default. Patches
are always welcome, and credit will always be given where credit is
due!

Regards,

Carson

We'll be happy to move the plugin to fTools when we're done with
it which will greatly improve its functionality.

In general, we see most of our development in Vector area (Statist,
JoinLines, DPSimplify to name the few) as potentially included in
fTools (Vector) or enhancing present tools.

Great! Just what I was hoping for :-)
