Hi Patrick, QAD plugin provides two commands useful for you: RECTANGLE command and POLYGON command (it draws regular polygons so you can use it for squares). In qgis3 (coming super soon) there is a new "Shape Digitizing Toolbar" with the "Add rectangle from 3 points" tool, among many others.
