Not exactly an answer, but if this is a mosaic of side by side images,
you should just create a Virtual Raster Table (VRT), then you only have
1 file to load and can ensure the proj info is correct. To make a VRT
use the Raster menu -> Miscellaneous.

Now to try and answer the original question:
Settings->Options->CRS "Prompt for CRS" might work, however not
recognized vs no projection are different.

Thanks,
Alex

Hi,
In your default CSR options, set "use project CRS" when CRS is not
specified.  The CSR may not be included in the .tif files even if it is
georeferenced. You can probably use the processing plugin to batch that.

Alex,
Unfortunately the images are all cover the same area, so the VRT option
didn't work.

I've tried playing with the settings under;
Settings->Options->CRS
but these aren't doing it for me. As you say, not recognized vs no
projection could be different.

Nicolas,

Tried setting "use project CRS" when CRS is not specified. However I’m
guessing there is a difference between unrecognised and not set. So this
didn’t help.

The TIF files are georeferenced. They load into Mapinfo with the correct
projection so I’m confident the information is there.

I’ll need to read up on the processing plugin, its not something I’ve ever used.

I thought there was an option such that all imported raster data had to be
defined on import?
