Re: [Qgis-user] Georeferencing Vector Files

2015-08-16 Thread Springfield Harrison

Hello Tom,
Thanks for your note, sorry for the delay.
Yes, the v.transform seems to work as advertised. Thanks for clarifying
which XY columns are for which file. I want to do some more testing
on some simple files just to confirm what is happening but it seems to be
the correct tool for I'm trying to do.
I agree that adding vector capability to the GeoReferencer would be
great. I gather that some of these upgrades need to be funded
somehow, not all of these features are free I guess. I'm fine with
that concept if we know they will work when finished.
The missing dependency problem seems to be persistent.
I think it tends to blight an otherwise marvelous collection of very
powerful GIS tools.
Thanks
Tom, Cheers . . . . . . . . Spring Harrison

Have you had any luck with v.transform.pointsfile? Below is an example of
the points text file that you’d need to feed it. The first 2 columns are
the x,y of your unreferenced drawing and the second 2 are the x,y of the
correct location. I used the coordinate capture plugin to get these
points.

Hope this helps

P.S. It would be REALLY amazing if support could be added to the
Georeferencer for vector layers. It seems that just provides a really
nice interface for getting these same coordinate pairs.
I would have thought that it would be a simple thing to add vector
support in there (big words from someone with no idea how to do it!) and
would be massively useful for us at least.

Hello Nathan,
Right, the option may be OK, just make it prominent.
Anything to avoid the mapset nightmare is welcome. That was another
time waster and I never did figure it out, especially the Group
option. One of the help screens showed a diagram of the umpteen
levels of folders but it still seems like an arduous process. I had
hoped that one could define a mapset to include a folder that already had
files in it, but it seemed that one had to create empty folders and then
import all the map files. Give me strength, there's only so many
hours in the day!

-

  * Vector Bender, VectorGeoreference plug-ins. Both of these
failed due to
missing dependencies. Although the programs are
experimental, should not
the underlying essential files be in place?
  * Grass V.rectify, v.transform.  I believe these operate
through GRASS. I
have gone down so many rabbit holes lately that
some of these details are
beginning to blur. I believe the problem here
was using GRASS itself.
There seems to be a steep learning curve,
particularly with the definition
of a mapset. The whole thing fell apart when the
process for defining a
Group (why?) required a raster file for a purely
vector process. I have
stuck in a dummy raster file and will try again
eventually. This has been
hugely time-consuming with nothing to show for
it.

 My main complaints are twofold,

  * missing dependencies. From extensive traffic on this list
over the past few
weeks, the whole QGIS environment seems to be
rife with missing support
files. I understand that this is open source,
etc. but surely all the
essential pieces should be in place. When I
attempt to install Vector
Bender, it reports missing dependencies and packs
up. Why doesn't it just
install the missing dependencies, it seems to
know what and where they are?

Missing dependencies for Plugins are python libraries that do not
ship
with QGIS as they are not QGIS specific and are set by plugin
authors
outside the main QGIS build system. Sometime down the road we hope to
be
able to pull such libraries as needed during plugin install...
On Windows also note that QGIS/OSGeo4w ship with their own Python
separate from the system to avoid conflicts. You have to install
extra
python libs into this QGIS specific python.

Right, a complex
process I suppose. I don't understand your second paragraph, and
don't really need to. However, it does indicate to me that one
needs a fair amount of very specific technical knowledge to do a full and
proper install. To me, this is a major failing, as I am not an IT
professional and only have rudimentary programming skills.

My
interest is in using the GIS tools that I need to their fullest, not in
unraveling the arcane foibles and quirks of a poorly implemented
installation process. As an end-user, my imperative is to do the
work, not endlessly fart around trying to get all of it's parts connected
and working. If I wanted to do that I would get a degree in
computer science and join the development team. Perhaps the
developers overestimate the technical computer skills of the
end-users. I suspect that most of us don't really care what goes on
under the hood, we just want to get work done.
Sorry for
the rant, I have wasted many evenings on what should be a very simple
task. I was contemplating donating to the cause but will give that
thought a rest for now.

Re: [Qgis-user] Georeferencing Vector Files

2015-08-11 Thread Nathan Woodrow
I would just suggest that this advanced/simple option be made more
prominent, probably at the top. I thought it was just a secondary title
and never even saw the drop-down arrow. Make it a radio button or
something obvious.

Yeah there is on going talk about what we can do here. Maybe even killing
the simplified interface, not sure yet.

The progressing toolbox should do what you need and you won't have to worry
about map sets and all that.

And I think I see what Alex Mandel was referring to about the
raster image. By pretending to Georeference the raster image, one will
build a GCP file automatically. At least, I think that was the intent.

Anyway, thanks for this, I may actually get somewhere now. This
certainly beats jumping through all the hoops to set up a GRASS session.

So what accounts for the difference? Some installation quirk no
doubt. I did select GRASS as an installation option. In 2.8.3 it was
listed under plug-ins, but under 2.10.1 is no longer there. But it was
 installed as a standalone.

Consistency does not seem to be a strong point here.

My trick, is convert the vector an image in QGIS (Save Image)
Georeference the image, saving the control point list out to a

Missing dependencies for Plugins are python libraries that do not ship
with QGIS as they are not QGIS specific and are set by plugin authors
outside the main QGIS build system. Sometime down the road we hope to be
able to pull such libraries as needed during plugin install...

On Windows also note that QGIS/OSGeo4w ship with their own Python
separate from the system to avoid conflicts. You have to install extra
python libs into this QGIS specific python.

Nathan has a good blog post about it, maybe someone can recall the link,
I can't seem to find it.

Re: [Qgis-user] Georeferencing Vector Files

2015-08-10 Thread Springfield Harrison

Hello Paolo,
Good that
you can report a different experience, hopefully a better one than
mine. My operating system is W7 and I have many years of experience
in GIS, mostly Manifold.
I have
received several suggestions for georeferencing vector files -

Vector Bender, VectorGeoreference plug-ins. Both of these
failed due to missing dependencies. Although the programs are
experimental, should not the underlying essential files be in place?
Grass V.rectify, v.transform. I believe these operate through
GRASS. I have gone down so many rabbit holes lately that some of
these details are beginning to blur. I believe the problem here was
using GRASS itself. There seems to be a steep learning curve,
particularly with the definition of a mapset. The whole thing fell
apart when the process for defining a Group (why?) required a raster file
for a purely vector process. I have stuck in a dummy raster file
and will try again eventually. This has been hugely time-consuming
with nothing to show for it.
My
main complaints are twofold,

missing dependencies. From extensive traffic on this list over
the past few weeks, the whole QGIS environment seems to be rife with
missing support files. I understand that this is open source, etc.
but surely all the essential pieces should be in place. When I
attempt to install Vector Bender, it reports missing dependencies and
packs up. Why doesn't it just install the missing dependencies, it
seems to know what and where they are?
Installation confusion. Again, from the above traffic there is
much discussion about the two different methods of installing QGIS, one
is apparently prone to problems. So why is it still available, in
fact why are there two different installation processes at all?
Anyway, I recently installed 2.10 using the non-standalone
installer. I chose the advanced option, as I do with most programs
I install, believing that I could customize the items being
installed. This resulted in over 101,000 file being installed,
which I found out later is the wrong approach. A better option is
to use Express Install which actually does offer some customization
options. This terminology is out of step with most programs where
express install implies a limited feature set with no options being
offered during the process.

Anyway, having done that I now have 2.10 but GRASS appears to be only
available as a standalone program, whereas before in 2.8 it was available
under the plug-in menu option. Why is there not a consistent
interface?
To sum up,
no software, even free, should be offered with missing
dependencies. If it doesn't work, don't offer it. And the
plethora of installation options is highly confusing and time wasting to
say the least. I am prepared to spend countless hours learning how
to use the abundant and powerful features of all these programs, but
don't feel I should need an IT degree to merely install them and run the
various tools.
My initial
enthusiasm for QGIS has been dampened considerably due to the huge number
of hours I have wasted trying to use tools that actually do exist to
address my particular needs.

Thank you Cheers

Processing Toolbox in QGIS. No need to actually go into GRASS and create
mapsets.

This worked really well for me for unreferenced DXFs. If you need any more info
let me know.

Cheers

Tom

Ok, thanks. I'm installing QGIS on W7 yet again, trying to achieve better
functionality. That is a challenge in itself, prone to wrong turns. Hopefully
the VectorGeoref will then work.

This whole install process is a real piece of work . . . . .

 Thanks again, cheers . . . . Spring Harrison

Re: [Qgis-user] Georeferencing Vector Files

Hello Andrea,

I tried both of these with no luck. The
Vector Bender is missing some components and does
not work, much the same for vectorgeoref. There
were warning messages on loading QGIS about
missing components. The dialog box for it would
open but I only got error messages in Italian, no functionality.

Can these plug-ins be made to
function? From the messages I see here, the
reliability of many add-ons is highly
suspect. It seems that the install process has many flaws.

Hello Alex,

This sounds promising, but then so did the other plug-ins.

Where do I find the OGR2OGR functionality? I found some
help information referring to it but nothing about how it is accessed.

Not sure why I would need to create the control points from
the raster georeferencing as I already have them from fieldwork or
other sources. What I do need is a function or tool to rubber sheet
the un-projected coordinate list onto a projected layer containing
the control points.

My CAD program is not able to do this. I tried manually
shifting and rotating but that is a very sketchy process at best. My
testing so far indicates that the transformation to UTM will require
both scaling and rotating.

Hi,
There is one sure way to do this, Use your CAD Package to align the
property survey to the correct CRS, using two common points.
What CAD Package are you using, if you have AutoCAD, then you can use
the align command to preform this, I assume that other packages have
similar commands!
There are vector align plugin's available, but I find the above method
simplest, There is a CAD plugin being proposed to help with this process

I hope this helps, If I can be of any further help, let me know.
