Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS on Windows 8 with GPS

2013-06-05 Thread G. Allegri
AFAIK Windows 8 doesn't provide ways to expose the Location API as a
virtual COM port (it's a feature that many users are asking).
A solution would be the use of a driver to expose the Location API as NMEA
provider.

Here two examples are provided:
 -
http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/windowshardware/Sensors-Geolocation-Driver-5f2a11d6
 -
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/library/windows/hardware/ff545919(v=vs.85).aspx

Well it's more a feature then a bug, but it does need to be fixed. We need
to be able to access the internal GPS without the user needing to install
another bit of software.

Markus wan't saying it was a bug. The question was if there were
experiences on bridging QGis with the Windows 8 Location API. I fear no.

We have to clarify something here. If you are connecting an external GPS,
e.g Garmin Glo to you via tablet via Bluetooth then I have no doubt it will
work fine as most of the time they are exposed using a COM port. Markus is
talking about the internal GPS device that is built in to some of these new
tablets. The internal GPS uses the new interface to let applications
receive the GPS information.

Hi all,

I'd like to use QGIS on a Windows 8 tablet pc which has a GPS inside.
Unfortunately, this sensors does not send a NMEA protocoll over a
virtual COM port. Instead, it uses the Windows "Location API" (see:
http://ker.li/locationapi ).
Does anybody have any experiences in using such a GPS sensor with QGIS?
How can the Location API be converted into a QGIS-known-GPS-device?

Many thanks and kind regards,
  Markus

This appears to be a known issue that people are complaining about with
basically all software that used to work on windows with GPS units.

http://gcoupe.wordpress.com/2013/02/24/microsoft-does-it-again/
http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/wdk/thread/c83dd941-0e03-448c-a438-33c573a6a22d/

There is a way to map the Location API to NMEA but Microsoft seems to
have decided that each developer will need to do it themselves.

So thanks for reporting, I'll check if we have an open ticket on the
issue but I can't promise when this might be resolved. Hopefully someone
will release an open source lib that does the conversion.

Thanks,
Alex
