On invalid polygon layers, I'm usually more lucky running the buffer 
algorithm with a buffer distance of 0.

Hi,
As suggested by the error message, I'd say in the Processing
settings, ie menu Settings -> Options -> Processing -> General.
That said, finding the invalid feature or running the repair
geometry algorithm beforehand could be a better solution than
disabling anything related to the invalid geometry.
