Very erudite, Robert ... thanks for all the information.

These 'fun' discussions throw up some unusual twists.

Although it is probably true to say that there has always been a
'wicked' sense of humour in the computer world ... :-)

I seem recall that the "C" language, for example, emerged as a new
variant computer language, as it was not "A" or "B" - which already
existed. So it became "C".

Basically anything in the Quanta Library is for Quanta members only, which
is reasonable as they have paid their subscription. Most authors submitting
programs to the library are also happy for them to go in other libraries,
but in the past some authors have insisted their program was for Quanta
members only.

As far as I am aware the author in this case has only submitted it to the
Quanta Library. It is possible he is quite willing for it to be distributed
to non-members, but it is his decision. As I said in the first mailing the
only contact details I have are snailmail,

Best wishes,
Geoff

According to "The Design of the Unix(R) Operating System" (ISBN
0-13-201757-1), the name Unix was (is) a pun on the name "Multics".

Multics was (developed as far as) a single user system (Multi- prefix
meaning "many"), and Unix is a many user system (Uni- prefix meaning "one",
or "single").

Incidently, those barbers and hairdressers that describe themselves as
"Unisex salons" ought really to be calling themselves "Omnisex salons" -
most salons are unisex, catering for one sex: male or female (Uni- =: one,
Omni- := all); though it probably originated as an abbreviation of
"Universal Salon".

I was not aware of that. He always sent a copy to the Librarian and
I used it regularly.
It had one simple advantage over Perfection. It had decimal tabs.

It was publicly available, not just for Quanta members.
In fact, Erling Jacobsen and Gunther Strube wrote in the "readme" file

"We hope that you will enjoy XCHANGE - and - it is YOUR
responsibility to distribute XCHANGE to every QL user you
know!"

The full archives were available on the JMS BBS and can now be
obtained on the BBS-CD I offered some time ago in QL Today,
at the time the BBS was shut down.

When ever Erling Jacobsen did an update to Quill he gave it to Quanta
Library.
