Re: [Ql-Users] QPC - XP

2009-03-21 Thread Dilwyn Jones

Thanks,
Doug L. 37830 USA

Hi Doug,
I've attached the original QL basic program listing (HANOI) and a zipped
copy in case the original basic program doesn't survive email. The zipped
copy should survive whatever damage this PC can do!

Also, if you look on my QL website, in the games section at
http://www.dilwyn.uk6.net/games/index.html there's a couple of Towers Of
Hanoi games there too.
Apologies, I thought this was a private email so in my haste I just hit
Reply and inadvertently sent the reply to th emailing list.

Have contacted him privately with the file.

[Ql-Users] Small Basic

2009-03-21 Thread Dilwyn Jones
I notice that Micro$oft have released something called Small Basic (it's been
around a while actually) which is a cousin to their QBasic and the like,
designed to go with the .net framework etc. But above all, what got my
attention was that it was designed to put the fun back into programming.

It's been designed to be a simple to use second generation BASIC and seems to
be aimed at youngsters and people who just want to write quick applications for
their own use rather than being a development system for commercial/free aps as
such. There's info about it here and a getting started guide which gives an
idea of what it's about.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/devlabs/cc950524.aspx

Is this some kind of admission that people are wanting to go back to simpler,
easier to learn programming systems like our S*Basic for example?

What does everyone else think?

The latest version of UCONFIG, my program for producing config blocks

This has been corrected and the new version is on my site:

Dilwyn,
Odd, the only thing I can find is a URL for smsqe , no reference to anything
else, rather than a Tower of Hanoi (I do want Mr. Kennedy's version, even if
with others. I can make a whole Towwer of Hanoi folder). Am I missing
something (not unlikely)?

 Dilwyn,
 John (Gilpin) said the following:

 Hi Doug,

Regarding your query about The Towers of Hanoi game, it is still in the
QUANTA Library on disc GG01 and is credited to P Kennedy on 22/08/1987

Contact Dilwyn Jones (QUANTA Librarian) who will be able to advise you the
best way to get a copy.

Also QUANTA Magazine had a similar program from Steve Poole in Volume 23,
 ...

At the moment I am after the Kennedy original; I have a feeling the
similar program from 2006 is quite different (although I will try it in
the QPCxx I _do_ have). Can you indeed show me how to get a copy? I have a
feelling the GG01 I do have by now will be bad medium or it's one of the
 ones I've formatted.

 Thanks,
 Doug L. 37830 USA
Hi Doug,

Please find attached the hanoi program by P Kennedy from Quanta Library disc
GG01.

I've attached the original QL basic program listing (HANOI) and a zipped
copy in case the original basic program doesn't survive email. The zipped
copy should survive whatever damage this PC can do!

Quanta members will be getting an up to date copy of the Library Guide disc
with their next newsletters in a few weeks, so finding library programs like
this should be easier for members.

Normally as Quanta Librarian I'd ask you to send me a disk for the program
and return postage, but for one small program like this to USA it just
seemed a lot easier to send by email.

I am assuming of course that you are still a member of Quanta - I take it
that you are since John Gilpin is membership secretary and wouldn't have
suggested this if you weren't.

It's so nice to hear from our QL friends over there again!

[Ql-Users] News: Q-Dict software

2009-03-21 Thread Dilwyn Jones

Q-DICT

This is a new pointer driven dictionary program, which uses plain text
dictionaries commonly available on the web. The program itself is pointer
driven and lets you enter a word or phrase in one language and it will
search for a translation or meaning. Various types of search are available
(exact match, starting with/ending with/containing a string, unaccented
match, or wildcard search). Search results can be copied to stuffer buffer,
Scrap, file, or sent to a job (e.g. transfer to an editor).

The dictionary format is quite simple, allowing you to build your own
dictionaries or modify these as you see fit - basically plain text with the
entry and meaning separated by a colon or tab character, e.g. house:maison.
This allows them to be used in an editor rather than Q-Dict if you prefer -
they have been converted to use the QL character set and have the standard
QL linefeed as end of line character.

Q-Dict is supplied with a French-English and English-French dictionary as
part of the package and a further 14 language pairs can be downloaded,
including German, Dutch, Spanish, Italian, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish,
Finnish, Welsh and Scots and Irish Gaelic.

Q-Dict needs Ponter Environment, Wman2 (recent SMSQ/E v3.00 or later, or
QDOS with pointer environment 2.00 or later), Toolkit 2, and expanded
memory.

Q-Dict is Freeware. The dictionaries are public domain.

Download the dictionary program and dictionaries from:
http://www.dilwyn.uk6.net/diction/index.html

(just scroll down to the Q-Dict section, where you'll find a sample screen
dump from Q-Dict)

Re: [Ql-Users] SERIAL 8056 Printer

2009-03-21 Thread Andy Barber
Oh the 8056, what memories! It would take about half an hour to print out a DP
Astrologer graphic, but it worked, if you can (still) find the (expensive)
paper!

Does it still require coal to be put in the back? LOL

ACB

John, you can get a replacement manual for this printer from my website:

http://www.dilwyn.uk6.net/docs/manuals/ser8056.zip

It lists the code, which IIRC is a subset of very basic Epson commands,
including a 60 dots per inch graphics mode. Control codes are listed from page
21.

Some of Quill's simpler printer drivers like the Epson FX80 might be able to
drive it, although check if the end-of-line character combination is right, as
I can't remember if it needs LF (10), CR (13), or both.

That's a point - there must be a few of these printers in circulation, I
wonder where John gets the paperfrom? Or does it use fax rolls perhaps?

I sort of Don't think so, More I think it is a move to promote the .Net
program usage. MS lost the fight to control Java and has come up with
the .Net programming language to fill out their plan to be all, do all
within their auspices. MS has a multi-pronged marketing program in
place to foster the growth and usage of the .Net (crap), hoping to
supplant and replace java.

It is them just continuing the world domination plan they have been
following for a long time in the software world.
