Re: [ql-users] PC to QL transfer

2007-02-10 Thread omega
I found on my disks extension called atDOS_cde (hope it's correct),
which adds superbasic keywords to read write Atari ST, MS DOS disks.
There are commands like ICOPY, ADIR... etc. Handy!

Strange - all my PC's running XP have no problem using DD disks.

He is dead right. Qemulator warns about this and none of my machines
accept DD disks.
Apparently it is an XP issue.

I ought to have said I can sometimes *read* from them if formatted on
the QL, but cannot write or format on the PC(s).

XP can access both DD and HD QDOS floppy disks: DD disks are only a problem
with Win98 (and only QDOS DD disks.. PC DD disks work fine). And on Win98
there is a workaround: configure the floppy disk drive as DD in the machine
hardware setup.

It actually depends on the chipset of the motherboard and / or the BIOS.
They removed ED disks from several BIOS types a while ago and DD ones
have been disappearing over the last few years. Many laptops will not
see DD disks any more - many don't any kind of floppy access at all.
Some chipsets now only support the HD disks.

Running is not the problem. Formatting is impossible - try it and you will
see why.
Formatting still works with QPC however,

 That's qltool: http://www.zen35309.zen.co.uk/misc/qxltool.zip
The only catch for some QL users might be if the QL only accepts DD
disks and the PC (like mine) HD ones.

There is a little known PE program by Wolfgang Lenerz - QLIBM - which if I
remember correctly can handle both DD and HD disks. (Most of the other QL/PC
disk transfer utilities cannot. It is in the Quanta library and probably
elsewhere,

It seems I had this chipset on all machines up to now (8-(#

I have very recently got a new laptop and USB floppy. I must try again.
