Re: [ql-users] The Wall, etc, etc

2002-11-03 Thread Peter Fox

The sound is rather like grinding gears and also happened when I had
problems with flp1_ running QPC2 3.03 under XP.

Is there any possible BEEP command that could get around this problem and
where should it be put??

Or will we all have to wait until you are less pressured?

Regards,

Peter

I have no idea what an unpleasant beep might be. In theory both
 systems should sound the same.

[ql-developers] Dithering algorithms

2002-11-03 Thread .

Hi all,
in the process of making the screens and sprites for Q-Word, I
started updating my BMP2PIC program that now sports two-
way conversion (from and to) QL Screens (PIC and SCR) Mode
32 and 33 as well as Mode 256. (Mode 16 not yet supported)
and 24 bit BMPs (I plan on implementing the full array of
bitdepths available on the bmps).

For the 24 bit to 15/16 bit conversion the method proposed by
Malcolm Lear (on whose program mine is loosely based) -To
chop off the 2 high bits from the colour components works
rather well (I added a little bit more logic to support the
intensity bit on the Q40/60 more completely) but I plan on
implementing 24bit/16bit to 8 bit in more than one ways.

For non-dithering operations I use, a colour weight average
method (with or without perceptional colour coefficients -USER
selectable-) but for dithering I need some advise from other
users that have some relative experience.

Malcolm uses the random pattern diffusion dither to bring down
24 bit images to Mode 8 and 4 but I find it very unpleasing to
the eye... I will be implementing that (heck the code is already
there why shouldn't I use it then ;-) but by investigating a
little further I found a huge cache of research on dithering and
colour perception.

My favourite pick is the Floyd-Steinberg error diffusion method
but there are others with Pattern matching, Bit enlarging etc.

In any case all of them are rather slow but I was wondering if
anyone has already done the research (Floyd-Steinberg for
example employs some nice differential equations in it...
nothing too fancy but all too interesting) so he could point me
to the right direction... I apparently cannot due to time
constraints code every single one of the algorithms in
existence (There are more than 100 that I know of) but three
to five that work well is a logical number to include.

I don't need code but rather info based on your own
experience or pointers for my own research After all this is
rather exciting don't you think?

Regards,

Phoebus

2002-11-03 Thread Tarquin Mills

Please can you help me.
How do you use slattach and Soql together, what IP address should
Soql be set to? Soql prints shared port, but slstat said no packets
have moved. So I then ran sm, which waits then says it cannot run
Soql. I know this email is a bit short but my first version was
wiped out in a crash. My computer is Sinclair QL with JS ROM, SGC,
ser1h baud 4800, flp2_.
I have read some of the QL Hardware thread and wondered what the
fastest 68K compatible processor is for floating point, the fastest
QL that I know of is the 66MHz Q60. I would like at least several
hundred MHz for Seti, though I realise that this is probably not
possible.

Hello all,

Sorry for jumping in late - I can usually only go through my messages at
weekends :(

I received one reply directly expressing an interest in membranes, and
will try to keep a running total of those who have expressed their
interest in replies to the original message and forward it to Rich to
add a guestbook entry for 'anonymous' requests. If we figure one per (+)
reply, that would be fair, yes? Some will want more, of course, but we
should end up fairly even (allowing for those dropping out if the price
is too high, etc.)

I think it would be a shame to not 'follow-through' and make sure a
supply is available in future for those people that want to continue to
use their unmodified QLs in future. Given that there seems to have been
a large (ish) number of them sold on eBay recently, I think it's
reasonable to expect a few people will need them in the next few months
and years. While there may not be an immediate 'rush', there may be a
fairly steady demand (say, a couple a month?) and an increasing amount
of interest.

Any chance of adjusting your email to 'plain text' for the list ?

From my RISC-OS graphic programs, they usually give the

Maybe you can have a tick box system to set the options
required ?

Certainly, it does have the option to switch dithering methods
and certainly the Floyd-Steinberg will be included...

No, just look for one that has all the options. Internally it's really the
same thing as far as the Ethernet chip is concerned.
If you can't find one, i think I can get you an ATlantic (NE2000)
compatible with both 10Base2 and 10BaseT. If the software doesn't do it,
IIRC this chip has a pin option (pull up/down) that forces the media
attachment option.
