[ql-users] Sinclair QL Collections

2002-08-10 Thread RWAPSoftware
I have just received various second hand QLs from Malcolm Cadman along with lots of other 2nd hand items.

I am adding a list of 2nd hand items to my web-site for those who are interested.  I still have lots of items to list
See http://hometown.aol.co.uk/rwapsoftware/2ndhand..html

I also have what looks like an issue 2 board (not working at the moment).  I recall someone was building a collection of all the various builds and had a web-page with pictures of the variations, but cannot remember who it was  Any ideas please.

Finally, just a push in Dave Park's direction - please please please work on that keyboard replacement - I now have about 6 QLs all working except for one or two keys!!!  A. The membranes are now too brittle to mess about trying to swap them.

Hi Rich

It was me collecting different build-standards of the QL. Here's a link to a
web-page
summarizing my collection:
http://mypage.bluewin.ch/QLvsJaguar/QLBuild-Standards_PCB-Issues.html

Issue 2 is not known to me to exist, so please give me more infos. It would
be great
if you could make 2 photos of it (top and bottom of the pcb) and send them
to me in
digitised form. If you have no use for the pcb, my home is always a safe
home for QL's (current status is 8 QL's, 2 ICL OPD's, 4 CST Thors, 2
Amigas).

It may not be issue 2 - it is very hard to read the writing on the PCB if not impossible!!

However, looking at your web-pictures, I cannot see anything similar.

This one has had a few changes to it, which does not help - a very early mouse interface is attached, saying Iss 1 Mouse Adapter - a small circuit board on various leads connected to the circuit board by the 8302 and the resistors near the 8049.

It does not work at the moment (no keyboard to try it anyway!!), but when I got it, I noticed the JM ROMs were the wrong way round (JM- on the right of JM-0008). I have swapped these for AH ROMs.

A lot of the capacitors are different from later versions (there are plain bronze in colour) and the row of resistors to the right of AH-0008 socket actually have some wire links in place of the resistors JU2, JU3 and JU4.

The only other obvious changes are that there is a heavy duty wire link with resistors/capactors (not sure which) from pin 10 of the 8302 (on the left hand side) to pin 20 on the right hand side of the 8302 (top right corner) and then across to the large blue capacitor just above the 8049 chip!!  Oddly, the black wire which normally trails from under the heat sink and ends up near the keyboard membrane is missing...

You can have the board by all means (as it stands) - please let me have your current postal address to send it to.

Issue number is in copper under the UHF modulator as well as on the top
in ink by CTRL ports.

You can 'press' F1 easily using a joystick, or even connecting the
relevant pins on the kbd connector direct.

These 'resistors' were in fact zero ohms - ie wire links.
That is why they had one black bar == 0.

What is 'top right corner'? (8-)#
Your pin numbering sounds wrong.

  --\/--
 pin 1-> |  | <- pin 40
 |  |
 |  |
pin 10-> |  |
 |  |
 |  |
pin 20-> |  |

Is that what you meant?

+ve or GND on the capacitor?

That was to get a better 5V to ram.
If that is not there, it does sound like an early version.

Hmm... not sure - have not taken board out of machine to look underneath just yet!!

    pin 10-> |  |

Is that what you meant?

Yes, it joins pin 10 and pin 40 with a wire link and a component labelled 13 ITT, then another wire link from pin 40 to the left hand side of capacitor 25 (think it is +ve - the end arrow points to)  That has a component labelled RS 022 250v.

+ve or GND on the capacitor?

Yes, it is indeed labelled underneath as an Issue 5 circuit board, so I wonder how many other variants there are of this issue???

To be sure what generation of a QL it is can you please post the
serial-number (eg Dxx-yy).

Another information which would help can be found on top left
of the component side of the PCB (above the expansion-slot
and left of the ROM-port). On early issue 5 PCBs theres a
date in ink like 84xx. I have a D05-QL which has 8415 there
which means the board was produce in April 1984.

A third (not really safe) method I use is to check every IC and
other components for production date like 84xx or 83xx. If
it holds a soldered component with date eg 8427 it was
produced or repaired after July 1984.

All that can end in an endless story ;-)

Have a good day...Urs

8418 - it is an issue 5, but seems later than yours!! Weird

A lot of the ICs have between 8327 and 8345 on them.
