Hi all, back from hols and back on email.

As regards the below email I sent from the centre regarding tonys pictures,
I checked it sent correctly - it did. But if was sent from the wrong email
address - there are about 4 set up on the PC I used, and it send from a
default email we use for queries in the centre rather than my own personal

subscribed to the list, so this is (I assume) why the email never appeared.

I am sure speed of response is nothing to do with (certainly) your

In this instance it was just that Darren's mail was lost.
This could simply be his ISP, or the mailing list system itself.

I've been reading the recent debate about the state and responsiveness of the ql-users mailing list with some interest.

I have my own machine hosted by an ISP which has a permenant internet connection, at the moment the machine is only used to run my website and to store stuff so that I can access it when I'm away from home. It is also the primary mail server for my domain.

Although the machine is very low powered by todays standards, the ql-users mailing list isn't high enough volume for that to be a problem.

If there is a need for a 'backup' mailing list or indeed if people would like to move ql-users over then I am more than willing to set up something on the machine to handle it.

Unfortunately, I'm away for the majority of September but I can certainly look at it when I get back!

phpbb and phpnuke are very good solutions.
However as many people cannot afford costly online services (esp. in Europe
where your local or internet calls are time-charged) that wouldn't work. I
think that was the problem with ql.spodmail too.

However a forum like that could work excellent as a backup method in case
the list fails again (btw it seems to have sped up considerably after my
last post!) Maybe it's the weather ? :-)

What I was thinking about is a regular mainstream newsgroup but moderated.
(You don't want the mess that goes on css of course) That would give a lot
of people access that is now unavailable and would expose the QL a little
more. Maybe as a css subgroup? ie. comp.sys.sinclair.ql -or something-

We could post a proposal if enough people back it. I don't see why we
couldn't have both

And we can always fall back to the mailing list if everything else fails
(Not to mention that offline news readers are a lot better in your inbox
than mailing lists)...

See for example the mail I sent by mistake to the list.. I am weeding my
ql-users list and I have more than 5000 messages there. A newsgroup
wouldn't do that to you as messages are temporary (and can be saved if you
REALLY want them), not to mention that spam arrest email addresses are
accepted (as opposed to the mailing list when you have to resort in
[EMAIL PROTECTED] solutions (hehe Tony ;-)

ql-chat has not been shut off. There are currently 12 subscribers. It has
very low traffic because most of it more properly belongs on ql-users, but
I have no plans to ever remove the list.

The likeliest reason for posting problems on ql-user is a quirk in the
spam filtering on the mailserver that runs the list. It refers to a spam
blocking list called Osiris, which was shut down recently. Due to the bad
way in which the list was shut down, it responds that ALL mail is spam.
This increases the score of some posts to the point where they get
filtered.

I observed that the problems commenced the exact day and time the Osiris
list flatlined.

My listserver is set with a high priority, with all mail being processed
within one minute. The delay in processing mail on the quanta listserver
may be as high as an hour, which means a response can take up to two hours
(1 hr to receive and sort, one hour to send, worst case.)

The ql.spodmail.com site HAS closed, because it attracted 7 hits in 3
months, and 5 of those 7 hits were one person.

Hope this helps...

Dave

Darren sent an email to this list telling everyone to look, but no
sign
of it.

I didn't see his email on this list.
I didn't see his email on the list either. The fact of the matter is that
since the move to quanta.org.uk the list has gotten VERY unreliable and
extremely slow. I do not know if this is because of the backbone the server
sits in, the connection, or if the list is hosted at somebody's own machine
via ADSL or whatnot, but the fact is that an email I send now, may come
back 2 or more hours later (average for me is about 1 1/2 hour). Many times
messages get lost, service is disrupted etc. etc.

I do not know what the solution should be, maybe even a moderated newsgroup
to allow access to more people, the fact of the matter is however that I
don't think that the current situation is pleasant. I believe I speak from
most of the over-the-pond QLers in saying that access to ql-users has been
frustrating to say the list since the move.
Spam has not really been reduced (okay we don't get posts in here anymore)
but our addresses are out there anyway, so why don't either switch do a
different format (newsgroup), server or anything else.
Other alternatives like QL-Chat have been shut off (QL-Chat was actually
the most responsive of all mail lists).

One other problem to point out is that with the current setup of both QL-
Users and QL-developers mail headers are not proper (ie some programs that
have the ability to understand them ie. Opera M2) cannot distinguish ql-
users/developers posts from regular mail and therefore organisation of our
inbox is out of the window. (Note here that even QLhardware at yahoo groups
provides standard headers and can be picked out by these few programs that
can understand the differences).

Finally I think that we at the very least need a backup mailing list for
purposes of communication when ql-users/developers break down (like in the
recent days)

Any comments?

Morning Jim,

I supbscribe to a couple of lists, this one for pleasure, others for work.
All of them have been quiet over the last couple of days. I thought our
email system had broken again, so I had a Techie check it out - it was fine.

It's probably just that everyone is working away dilligently building the
next great QDOSMSQ application - which reminds me, why are you wasting good
development time sending out emails - don't you have the next great QDOSMSQ
application to finish? :o)
