It is my wont to take as much as possible out of the C: drive, leaving
it as Uncle Bill's sandpit. to remove as many of the changing files to
other partitions. Where is the logic of stuffing temp files deep in the
static OS material ?
On my first PC (486 with DOS/Win 3.1) I originally split my drives up to
avoid large cluster sizes (and because it was originally a server with a
small C: to boot it, and the rest as a partition for the server), but in
doing so, also split out stuff to different drives:

 C: - OS
 D: - programs
 E: - more programs
 F: - Test programs
G: - temp drive (holds Windows VM file)
every drive had a \tmp directory, but the default was on G: (TEMP=G:\TMP) .
(Further partitions hold FreeBSD.) My later Win98 PC also has
partitions with C: (OS), D: (Programs), E: (Temporary), again with the
Windoze VM file on E:, and TEMP=E:\tmp (every occurance of temporary file
directory I could file was changed to point here as opposed to
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP; tho' I didn't change the Temp IE files as I don't us the
Win98 boot for surfing [or much these days]).

I have often removed chunks but there is much that one cannot attack -
the REG !!!

I have loaded Windoes and Office, without OUTLOOK and ACCESS, but there
remain hundreds of references to them in the REG. I think I really must
look into the LITE Windows referred to recently .
Did you load to empty machine, or re-load without/remove LookOut & Access?

Yup, they just go the easy route 'because it works with IE'.

It's because admins who don't know any better think that if you're not
using IE or Moz then they're going to get lots of grief when their sites
'don't work'. Which is of course a fallacy.

Re: [ql-users] QXL SMSQ

2004-09-18 Thread Roy wood
I did RTFM, before trying to format, the command "WIN_FORMAT 1" is
unknown to my version.
I was not sure about which version this appeared in. Even TT forgot he
had put it in and wondered why he could not format a drive - as he told
us at one of the French shows.
However, I did explore the code in a hex editor and noticed a few
spelling mistakes in the clear ASCII words - corruption ??

Used other configured versions to find 2 out of 4 working. Am getting
WIN2 and more, sadly it wont work on a USB memcard reader, which
appears as H:\ drive - might have been useful !
I tried something similar with my QXL (of course it runs SMSQ/e v.3.x)
and I didn't have any problems... I could upgrade you if you like (or
anyother SMSQ/e vendor for that matter plus you'll get fancy colours :-)

The ability to configure SMSQ/E for the QXL so that you can assign WIN1_
to WIN8_ to different drive letters or different files was only put into
the latest version.

Try zeljko.nastasic @ zg . hetnet . hr

(without the spaces, of course)

I had one bounce back with a message for the server that the above was the
new one. This seemed to get through OK,

Re: [ql-users] browsers

2004-09-18 Thread David Tubbs
Hi Robert Newson,
A fellow traveller.
My first PC was an original IBM PC 8086 (no not new bby a long way), into
which I put a 286 board. A bit better than doing emulation on the QL.
Then I built, box and all, a very small 268 with the QXL. Alas it was hten
necessary to wind ones way up the x86 ladder and through the OS's. But I do
feel the loss of a BASIC to instruct the comp' on the hoof, and especially
the absence of DP's EDITOR (Chas Dillon) magic prog, shame it is not
totally Pointer Envirnment friendly

On my first PC (486 with DOS/Win 3.1) I originally split my drives up to
avoid large cluster sizes
Exactly my reason for my first large HDD half gig. 128Mg partitions, same
with a later 1gig. No way 32kb for a tiny INI file.
An added advantage is the quicker defrag of the C:, the one that needs it most.

 C: - OS
 D: - programs
 E: - more programs
 F: - Test programs
G: - temp drive (holds Windows VM file)
My F is usually for installation packages, incl' WINDC and a fixed swapfile.
but the default was on G: (TEMP=G:\TMP)
Recomend put two lines in autoexec.bat -
SET TMP=G:\ATMP
SET TEMP=G:\ATMP
Will bring it to the top of the tree
I have loaded Windoes and Office, without OUTLOOK and ACCESS, but there
remain hundreds of references to them in the REG. I think I really must
look into the LITE Windows referred to recently .
Did you load to empty machine, or re-load without/remove LookOut & Access?
From bare load, dont think you can unload Outlook or OE, one or the other,
I never opened that sidedoor entry to my PC - Eudora !
Much that one declines to load is still there, just switched off. I put
Word and Excel onto D: Progs but still 150Mgb finds its way into c:\prog'
files - Ugh !

Thanks ... but I haven't got QLiberator, although I have Qlib_run with

That is likely to be the problem.
Using the alternative - CD_Player_rtm - produces nothing ... :-(
I do have Turbo Toolkit loaded too.

I dont know the inner detail, just that it put a QXL.WIN on D: for WIN2_
WIN's 1 to 8 are visible in the SMSQ (no /E) 2.57
