RE: [qmailtoaster] Emails Footer/Disclaimer Notice

2006-05-10 Thread nandakumar.cherukuru

Hi Jake,

Thanks for your lovely tip. I went and looked in Sq mail's
website and got hold of a email_footer plugin. And it just does what I wanted
from the web mail point of view.

As said by you earlier, since it is in the devel build, I
hope it will soon make it to the stable release and then I can upgrade my QT
during that time and benefit from this feature as well.

As such it is not for me and since my friend runs a small
firm, I configured him this wonderful mail server. And he asked can he also get
a disclaimer :( - Luckily he is planning to use SQ. Mail only for the near
future, so for the time-being email_footer might be the
answer.

Thanks.
Nanda.

May be I'll give the devel build a try? Because adding
it to webmail messages means requesting the users of the system to add it,
rather than forcing a footer. But it might be the last measure
:(

Hope the next version will have this feature in
it.
As far as adding it to webmail...
I know this could be done with Horde, back when Toaster used to roll this out
as well. I never tried in Squirrelmail. Maybe check Squirrelmail's website to
see if it can be added to the config there? That way all emails throuhg
  webmail would contain the
footer.

[qmailtoaster] Quota Usage Status bar in Webmail

2006-05-10 Thread Supriyo Banerjee

Unlike in the previous Qmail Toaster versions, the present
version of Squirrelmail doesn’t display the quota usage status bar on top
of the folder list. I did include the ‘quota_usage’ plugin for the
same, but it didn’t help.

It is a really useful way for the users to keep track of their
mailbox quota. Any suggestions how to troubleshoot it?

Get a router whois capable for multiple DMZ static IP adressing & NAT
translation.

The router you need is similar to the 3COM Office connect 25.
This router is discontinued but i am sure they have another appliance
who has the same spesification.
25 means only 25 users (mac's) can use the router as gateway to
internet/lan.

This router you can add DMZ range of IP's or one by one .
Here you can read more about this Internet Firewall /slash/ router.
http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/detail.jsp?tab=features&sku=3C16770-US&pathtype=purchase

Such routers are intended for business enviroments and can be
expensive, my guess around $500USD ++

Or

Add a switch between the modem & the router(s), connect multiple
router with their own unique IP adresses with able to authenticate PPPoE.
Tends to be alot of wiring mess ;) but can be cheaper, thou more power
consuming and general heating ( if you have a smaller room for your
equipment )
Test this setup first before any major purchase, some ISP may block
unknown mac's.
In some modems, you may have to change the modem setting to
"bridgeing", usual in newer modems with builtin switch/firewall/router.

Another method would be to put together another computer (doesn't have
to be anything terribly special), and install IPCop (ipcop.org) or
Endian (efw.it) on it. They allow you to have multiple public IP
addresses on the machine, and you can do custom routing:
If a connection comes to port 25 on IP 72.168.255.255 forward it to
192.168.1.3
If a connection comes to port 25 on IP 73.169.255.255 forward it to
192.168.1.4
Or however you want to route it. Also provides a good firewall, snort,
VPN capabilities, etc.

What are the tips/tricks to make the QT run any faster than what it

What areas can be checked? Like where the performance bottle necks

Also, how can we have virus scanner and spam assassin run on a separate

How can such an installation be done?

Thanks for your help.

2006-05-10 Thread Brian Trudeau
Another idea is to have the one just use /var/qmail/control/smtproutes to
route emails to the other machine internally. But all external email would
be hitting that one machine, and also means you're putting all your eggs in
one basket, that frontend box goes down you're sol(but if just the internal
one goes down at least the frontend will cache).

Jus an other idea:
You can recieve all mails in your first server, and then forward your
3rd domains mails to your alternative server.

This can be done easilly, just setting some dns´s and rcpthosts registries.

With this schema, you only need one IP and one port.

QMT is about as streamlined as can be expected. You could so some
things like limit the number of spam checks it does (or disable
altogether), stop it from scanning for viruses, etc. Might shave a
couple tenths of a second off of messages.
The rest of what you're asking *COULD* improve performance (only if
over 50,000 email accounts, and more than 100,000 messages a day
incoming), but would require a cluster setup. You'd need at least 3
machine, setup NFS for your /home and /var directories and share the
MySQL DB. Then machines could be set to specific tasks, but this
wouldn't be of much benefit unless you're running an ISP.
In my experience, a good P4 CPU (not a Celeron...), and a Gig of RAM
can handle just about anything you throw at it. Other services running
on the same machine could slow it down a little, but I run Apache and
ProFTPd on my machines (with 1G of FTP traffic daily) without any
noticeable bumps. The only time I've really noticed a lag was when
running rsync to backup the web/FTP directories to a remote machine
from a cron script. I would open about 20 rsync threads, which ate the
entire bandwidth on a fractional T1.

the slow connection/upload speed they have over there.

Still I'll think about your suggestions. At the moment, the

What all the services I could stop safely without affecting

occasionally to check logs etc, we need to keep the ssh daemon running, apart
from that, I could boot it into init mode 3 (console only) and what other

I've installed it on CentOS 4.3

Well, init 3 would be best. No need to waste CPU-clicks on the GUI if
you're not using it.
The other services probably aren't eating much if they're not being
used. They just leave potential holes to get in. The data pipe you have
is rather restrictive.  I don't know the math for that pipe off the top
of my head, but a 768K fractional T1 can effectively transmit roughly
350 Megs of data per hour, so you can best-guess your pipe to transmit
115 Megs per hour. Throw in some attachments, and you could easily
bottle-neck that.
Where exactly are you noticing the bottle-necks, of at all? Might be
able to adjust a few things to help speed it up in specific areas

I installed the nutsmail XP skin and when we try to access

This is using a IE 6 browser on Win XP.

As far as I know, nutsmail skins are just based on CSS and
using few icon sets. I'm not facing any problems on my server with the same skin
pack which is running here in UK. I've got a 2Meg line at home and the box as
such is a P3 with 512MHz Dell Optiplex.

Basically using the web mail, the images on the web are
taking time to download.

XP.

As far as I know, nutsmail skins
are just based on CSS and using few icon sets. I'm not facing any
problems on my server with the same skin pack which is running here in
UK. I've got a 2Meg line at home and the box as such is a P3 with
512MHz Dell Optiplex.

  Basically using the web mail,
the images on the web are taking time to download.

  Thanks for all your
suggesstions, they are really valuable to me.

I've always noticed a pause as it loads images on my systems here as
well (running Firefox and IE 6). One of mine is at a co-location
center, running off of an OC, so bandwidth is not an issue.
Maybe optimizing Apache would benefit. Might want to check out their
site and see if they offer any suggestions on streamlining Apache. I
know there was an option in there to compress images before sending, to
be uncompressed on client machine.

Check out

http://www.qmailrocks.org/extra/ and scroll down to
Vqregister.
It's not through Squirrelmail, but it will enable self service for
registration which will then give them access to an account on your
system that they can access via Squirrelmail.
Install this then modify your Squirrelmail start page/index.
