RE: [qmailtoaster] qmail machine being spammer help...
I had one of my servers with this problem. It was Roundcube and Apache. Still not sure that I'm safe enough. It didn't happen again so far, and I hope it wont. I have two other servers, for witch I gladly bought a QMT install cd to prevent any of this :) Regards, António Pedro Lima -Mensagem original- De: Philip Nix Guru [mailto:phi...@ows.ch] Enviada: segunda-feira, 31 de Agosto de 2009 21:20 Para: qmailtoaster-list@qmailtoaster.com Assunto: Re: [qmailtoaster] qmail machine being spammer help... Hello we had a lot of those attacks on our web hosting servers in the past and it has only to do with apache . It is a known and old exploit, a spam relay is using Apache to forward data to an open mail relay. We check those at router level but the mod_security works fine for a single machine Really it is an old exploit. Nothing to worry about regarding the toaster, well you can always add a nice mod_security configuration to take care of all those little exploits Jake Vickers wrote: Eric Shubert wrote: Thanks Jake. So is this simply an apache configuration issue? Is there an easy way it can be 'fixed' in a toaster package configuration? It's actually an issue with the programming of the application (talking about Roundcube here). There are a couple different Apache modules that can be utilized to proxy or filter the PHP code used and help prevent the exploits in the code. I'm sure something could be written into QTP to install any one of those modules if someone wants to lay out a skeleton that can be used as a base for the installation of the module. - Qmailtoaster is sponsored by Vickers Consulting Group (www.vickersconsulting.com) Vickers Consulting Group offers Qmailtoaster support and installations. I did just what you described except I pushed it to a text file so I could see better what was happening. I ran it with the 5 day setting and didn't get anything. Then I dropped it to 2 days and got a list. The script is apparently working but only on about half of the domains. I have other domains that never made it into the output.txt file. I know there is trash there because I have one user with over 3000 messages. I guess now the question is, does the script just delete everything older than DELTIME? or is it looking for something to only get messages? I see in the output that it looks like it's going to delete some index and dovecot-uidlist files. Is this ok? It probably shouldn't delete these files, but I don't think it will hurt anything. Dovecot is very robust and will fix things on the fly that get wacked out. If you give me the exact file names I can add an exception to the script. What can I do to see why it's not finding all of the old messages?. Do you have this statement in your script?: for each in ${PATH_TRASH} ; do Try removing the quotes and see if that fixes it. The qtp-clean-spam script had the same bug that was fixed last December. Looks like I missed fixing the qtp-clean-trash script. Eric, I removed the quotes and reran with the same results, still not finding all messages. Here are the control files names: courierimapacl courierimapuiddb dovecot.index.cache dovecot.index.log dovecot-uidlist maildirfolder All of these are in .Trash and all other folders (.Drafts, .etc) so a global exclude might be in order. You'll know better what can be deleted and what can stay. Since I'm now on dovecot I'm sure the courier files can go but it might be good to exclude the entire list for those who are still on courier. Thanks Phil. Can you try replacing for each in ${PATH_TRASH} ; do FILES_TO_DELETE=`find ${each} -type f -ctime +$DELTIME` if [ -n ${FILES_TO_DELETE} ]; then for file in ${FILES_TO_DELETE} ; do if [ -n ${file} ]; then rm -f ${file} /dev/null 21 fi done fi done with for each in $PATH_TRASH; do find $each -type -f -ctime +$DELTIME -exec rm -f {} \; done The find command is quite powerful indeed. ;) So now it looks like this: if [ -n ${PATH_TRASH} ]; then for each in $PATH_TRASH; do find $each -type -f -ctime +$DELTIME -exec rm -f {} \; done fi But I get an error: find: invalid argument `-f' to `-type' Sorry. It's just -type f OK, it ran but I still have 3000+ messages. Would it break anything to swap to mtime? Phil, I doubt your backup utility would change the ctime on these files. Generally speaking, backup utilities use ctime to determine if the file should be backed up or not when doing master, differential, incremental backups. Something else is changing the ctime. see this link for a good description of the difference between atime, ctime, mtime. I personally wouldn't be afraid of using mtime instead of ctime if it deletes the files. http://www.unix.com/tips-tutorials/20526-mtime-ctime-atime.html I think the issue with the 3000+ messages is the shell. Maybe need to use find $each -type -f -ctime +$DELTIME -print | xargs /bin/rm -f Dave Thanks for the help here Dave and Eric. I may not have been too clear in the beginning. The 3000+ message account is the one I'm using as a gauge to check operation. I have several others that are in the same boat, just not an obvious number of messages. The 3000 is easy to see if there's a dent in the count after running. I'll try the mtime and see what happens. I'll run the DELTIME out to 30 to be sure I don't nix something wrong. -- -Eric 'shubes' - Qmailtoaster is sponsored by Vickers Consulting Group (www.vickersconsulting.com) Vickers Consulting Group offers Qmailtoaster support and installations. Re: [qmailtoaster] stop checkuser checks for blackberry
hello i applied the as you said :allow,BADMIMETYPE=,BADLOADERTYPE=M,CHKUSER_ALLOW_SENDER_CHAR_3=/,CHKUSER_RCPTLIMIT=150,CHKUSER_WRONGRCPTLIMIT=10,QMAILQUEUE=/var/qmail/bin/simscan,DKSIGN=/var/qmail/control/domainkeys/%/private,NOP0FCHECK=1 no complaints from anybody so i can safely say that you can go ahead and implement this as default in future toaser releases. referring to you comments below when i edit a working mail server i have to be extra careful and edit things which i am absolutely sure of with 0 percent risk. So initially i started with just the blackberry ips exclusively and then i took a step ahead for the complete server. rajesh Rajesh M wrote: sir, i understood what you say, but if i use it in the last line then it would mean the whole server and i did not want that. Why not? I can't think of any reason why it should be limited. on the safe side i just applied it to only the blackberry ips and not the entire server. Safer how? I think you've just unnecessarily complicated things. Plus, when blackberry IPs change, you'll have more work to do. 24 hours have passed since the implementation and nobody has complained, so i can safely say that you can go ahead and implement this as a default ... in the tcp.smtp file. further on i believe there is way to describe range of ips -- something like this 206.53.144-159:allow,CHKUSER_ALLOW_SENDER_CHAR_3=/ to apply for the entire range from 206.53.144.0 to 206.53.159.255 ... i tried using the above but it was not getting implemented correctly. Again, I don't understand why you wouldn't simply implement it across the board (for everyone). rajesh I apparently wasn't very clear. You should be able to simply add CHKUSER_ALLOW_SENDER_CHAR_3=/ to the last line, then delete all of the lines for the individual blackberry servers. Thanks for trying this and letting us know how it works. Rajesh M wrote: sir as advised by you i changed the tcp.smtp file and recompiled using # qmailctl cdb i did as follows and it seems to work correctly. hello inspite of all this -- you may have some problems initially till hotmail and yahoo learns that emails from your server ip is not spam we also had this problem initially so i used to send test emails to my hotmail and yahoo accounts and specifically declare them as not-spam i also explicitly emailed hotmail people using their feedback form. this is their email id sends.edfs.ww.00.en.rta.sea.es.gst.lv1.00...@css.one.microsoft.com this problem got resolved in around 3-4 days hotmail was very very peculiar -- if email sized was less than 2 kb they used to put in spam, so while sending test emails for checking ensure that they have some text content exceeding 2 kb. all i can say is good luck to you rajesh Domain Key and reverse DNS are ok. [qmailtoaster] can't send mail
I had an issue with a blackberry user, so I went to the video to recompile the toaster to allow the / characters in the from address. All went well with the recompile and subsequent re-install. However, after the re-install I can no longer send or receive mail even to a local user. It seems all the mail queues up, so I'm not losing mail, and whatever is in the queue all releases if I restart qmail (qmailctl restart). In my toaster I had removed domain keys, by changing the link to qmail-queue to point to qmail-queue-orig, and I had installed spamdyke so I had to change the /service/smtp/run to link to /service/smtp/run.spamdyke, I remembered to change those back. But there is still something I'm missing. Unfortunately I didn't think about it changing all my settings until after the fact. I'm sure there is some other customization that I need to fix that I am missing. Any help would be appreciated as restarting qmail every 15 minutes or so to get mail to deliver is NOT working for me on a Friday :) Thanks, Gary - Qmailtoaster is sponsored by Vickers Consulting Group (www.vickersconsulting.com) Vickers Consulting Group offers Qmailtoaster support and installations. RE: [qmailtoaster] yahoo and gmail spam
We found the Feedback Loop to be very effective, if you're a ISP you can always request a white listing of your IP's, but Yahoo is not the only one who uses return path, Comcast, Cox, Roadrunner, Usamail, these also can give you a lot of trouble. We send a little over 80,000 messages a day, and if you actively follow the feedback loop you will avoid this issues. If your blocked currently with Yahoo, you will have to request yourself to be removed. This can take 4 - 6 days on average after you fight with them. Make sure you have a plan and clear Privacy Statement, Terms of User, and easy way of unsubscribing from your mail listings. -Original Message- From: Rajesh M [mailto:24x7ser...@24x7server.net] Sent: Friday, September 11, 2009 7:29 AM To: qmailtoaster-list@qmailtoaster.com Subject: Re: [qmailtoaster] yahoo and gmail spam hello inspite of all this -- you may have some problems initially till hotmail and yahoo learns that emails from your server ip is not spam we also had this problem initially so i used to send test emails to my hotmail and yahoo accounts and specifically declare them as not-spam i also explicitly emailed hotmail people using their feedback form. this is their email id sends.edfs.ww.00.en.rta.sea.es.gst.lv1.00...@css.one.microsoft.com this problem got resolved in around 3-4 days hotmail was very very peculiar -- if email sized was less than 2 kb they used to put in spam, so while sending test emails for checking ensure that they have some text content exceeding 2 kb. all i can say is good luck to you rajesh Domain Key and reverse DNS are ok. Just reflective of the last restart. From looking at the server everything seems to be operating as normal.. Also, just several FYIs.. - When I rebuilt qmail-toaster to remove the / in chkusr, I actually also upgraded. My server was running qmail-toaster-1.03 1.3.18 prior to the work and qmail-toaster-1.03 1.3.19 after. I also notice there are a few other minor updates to other packages since my old 1.3.18, such as my simscan is 1.4.0.-1.3.1 and I notice it's now 1.4.0-1.3.8 on the download. - The smtp2 service you see running is smtp on an alternate port so my road warriors work from any ISP, which was unchanged by the new update. - The crappy old tmda stuff was installed from Bill Shupp's toaster as that's what I used to run. I'm trying to get rid of it but have a few users who are holding on to it.. But again, that didn't change and I don't believe any of that install touches any of the toaster files, it just uses .qmail files in users directories to do it's thing. Re: [qmailtoaster] can't send mail
Sounds like qmail-send isn't able to read the queue after it's cycled through once, like it's blocked or something. I'm not real familiar with how that mechanism works. [qmailtoaster] Qmailtoaster - 2 server replication
Hello! I need to move my one email server to new ip address. I wouldn't like to make something crazy like dual gateway routing to achieve this. So actually I have this educational idea to test it out and set up 2 qmailtoaster boxes to back each other up (replication) during the ip changing phase. What's roughly the idea how to have 2 identical qmailtoaster boxes (so if I change the ip address on the DNS it will transparently change over to new server with zero downtime to customers)? I can have common mysql server for those 2 boxes, this is not a problem (and i know how to set up mysql replication if i would ever need to have separate mysql servers for additional security). But will it work if I just keep db in sync and use NFS or glusterfs to keep the same filesystem across the toasters (/home/vpopmail, /etc/tcprules.d?)? Is it correct that i need to have some files in sync from /var/qmail/? Re: [qmailtoaster] can't send mail
There's a queue_repair.py script in QTP. I'd give that a shot (after flushing the queue and stopping qmail). Just a swag at this point. Gary Bowling wrote: Yikes.. well, ok then. I rebooted, but still the same. Very perplexing as I have checked stuff until I don't know what else to check.. Gary Sounds like qmail-send isn't able to read the queue after it's cycled through once, like it's blocked or something. I'm not real familiar with how that mechanism works. I wonder if there isn't a zombie process hanging around that's gumming up the works. Have you (dare I say) rebooted? Gary Bowling wrote: Just reflective of the last restart. Re: [qmailtoaster] Qmailtoaster - 2 server replication

Am I on the right track with my ideas at all? You can use NFS as the backend, but you will need to only network some of the config files. I just did a video series on how to build a replicating Qmailtoaster server over at http://video.qmailtoaster.com Not exactly the same setup as you're attempting to do now, but the end result is the same.
