RE: [qmailtoaster] Firewall

After you run the script firewall.sh, yes

Running this script starts the firewall and saves the settings to
'/etc/sysconfig/iptables' which is used on boot. This is on CentOS systems.

RE: [qmailtoaster] delay for sending Annex (HELP)

2009-02-27 Thread Eric C. Broch
If the sender is using Outlook and is using MSWord to send email the
attachments might be coming in as winmail.dat which another email client
such as Outlook Express won't see. In other words, the attachment isn't
gone, just not viewable by the email client. Check the email for winmail.dat
attachment. I did this by looking at the source. Try these sights.

http://www.kopf.com.br/winmail/winmail.php

"Winmail.dat files are in fact TNEF attachments (transport neutral

Microsoft Exchange applications.
How to Prevent the Winmail.dat File from Being Sent."
Winmail.dat Reader is good for decode.

http://facstaff.gpc.edu/~jbenson/resource/winmail.htm

"When an Outlook user composes and sends a message using either Rich Text
Format or HTML Format, Outlook automagically generates a file, winmail.dat,
and attaches it to the end of the message. winmail.dat contains formatting
information, in a human-unreadable form, that Outlook will use on the

Outlook is the ONLY email client program that can use this information!
Netscape Messenger, Eudora*, and other email client programs don't

I would presume that if you pinged the machine you would get the old address
as well. Look at the box you are doing the testing from and make sure it
has correct DNS servers. The nslookup may not be using the same DNS as the
box. It usually does but you can change it with the "lserver" command.

RE: [qmailtoaster] DNS issue

2009-02-19 Thread Eric C. Broch
Phil,

Thanks,

"I would presume that if you pinged the machine you would get the old
address as well."

You are exactly right. It resolves to the old ISP address

"Look at the box you are doing the testing from and make sure it has correct
DNS servers."

The machine I am testing from is the mail server itself. The contents of
/etc/resolv.conf is 127.0.0.1

"The nslookup may not be using the same DNS as the box."

When I test at the nslookup prompt and type the FQDN of my mail server it
resolves correctly and uses 127.0.0.1 as the non-authoritative server. What
I don't understand is which servers would telnet and ping be using?

"lserver command"

This application is not on my Linux box. Yum doesn't install it either. Any
suggestions.

I'll send you the info you requested privately.

Finally, shouldn't the settings have propagated throughout the internet, and
shouldn't telnet and ping use the contents of /etc/resolv.conf to resolve
FQDN's?

Eric

[qmailtoaster] DNS issue

2009-02-19 Thread Eric C. Broch
Dear List,

I just set up a new email system. It has been up and running for about two
months and works very well. I set this system up for a client and moved all
the DNS settings from a previous email provider and ISP. I have one issue
that doesn't SEEM to be affecting anything but is just plaguing the back of
my mind. If I do an nslookup on the command line of this mail server with
the FQDN it resolves to the external IP address of the server, the public IP
address, as one would expect; however, when connecting via telnet on port
25, with the FQDN, it connects to the old mail providers email server. How
could this be? I am doing both commands on the same box.

RE: [qmailtoaster] Redirect mail for root

2009-01-15 Thread Eric C. Broch
Richard,

Here a two ways to accomplish this:

1)

Create files of the following form in /var/qmail/alias:

-rw-r--r-- 1 alias nofiles 22 Dec 2 16:33 .qmail-mailer-daemon

-rw-r--r-- 1 alias nofiles 22 Dec 2 16:33 .qmail-postmaster

-rw-r--r-- 1 alias nofiles 22 Dec 2 16:33 .qmail-root

Inside each file is the following instruction:

 <mailto:&postmas...@whitehorsetc.com> &postmas...@whitehorsetc.com

2)

You can also do the following:

1) http://mydomain.nl/admin-toaster/ in a browser

2) Go to qmailadmin

3) Log into postmaster account for 'mydomain.nl'

4) Go to 'New Forwards'

5) Add forwards.

a. Name: mailer-daemon, root or anonymous one at a time (domain should
be there already)

b. Destination: postmaster

c. Select 'Add'

Under /var/qmail/alias you will have a couple files. They're hidden:
.qmail-postmaster
.qmail-root

Inside those files you will see what email address is defined for each

You can also define .qmail-anonymous and .qmail-mailer-daemon

Hello list,

Spamdyke is rejecting many legitimate emails with the DENIED_RDNS_RESOLVE
flag. When I do a reverse lookup 'nslookup ' on these senders
there is indeed a reverse record. Has anyone encountered this behavior in
spamdyke? If so, what is the cause? I don't want disable this option as it
blocks many erroneous IP's and unwanted email nor do I want to add entries
to files unnecessarily.

I want to specify a whole domain. I don't see an answer on spamdyke help

I tried these:

[qmailtoaster] spamdyke

2008-12-31 Thread Eric C. Broch
Hello list,

I just installed a qmailtoaster on a site (domain0.com) and have started
interacting via email with users on that site from my site (domain1.com). My
messages are not received right away. When I check my queue they are in the
qmail queue on domain1.com. When I dump the smtp log on domain0.com it gives
this error: DENIED_SENDER_NO_MX (sender domain has no MX record) for my
messages. Eventually the email is delivered, but why does spamdyke give this
error when the email is initially sent and then deliver it later. If I put
domain1.com ip address in the spamdyke whitelist_ip on domain0.com
qmailtoaster, first time delivery is a success, but I'd rather find out what
is wrong with my MX record and fix it. My server (domain1.com) is not the
domain name server for my domain and I am unsure whether this is the
problem. All the records, including MX is controlled by me at my domain
registrar.

Eric S.,

Thanks for your reply. I was in error. The attachment is not being stripped
off, something in the MIME(?) is being changed as follows:

FROM THIS (NORMAL, The same attachment sent from my business account):

--=_NextPart_000_002D_01C9659E.9B87DBA0
Content-Type: application/msword;
 name=".doc"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
Content-Disposition: attachment;

Content-Type: application/ms-tnef;
 name="winmail.dat"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64

After download the attachment is still there and the size of the email is
normal; however, the content is not showing up as an attachment. Somewhere
in the process, not necessarily on the qmailtoaster, it seems, this header
is being changed. I don't know where though, or why. Any insight would be
greatly appreciated.

Sounds like something unique to her client. Client anti-virus setting
perhaps? Some other setting that prohibits attachments?

[qmailtoaster] vpopmail

2008-12-23 Thread Eric C. Broch
Hi list,

One of the users on my qmailtoaster is receiving messages with attachments
from every sender but one. It seems the attachment is being stripped off at
the server when it is downloaded using pop and imap. My client is using
outlook express and I had her set it up to leave a copy of the message on
the server. The message on the server has the attachment but when downloaded
the attachment doesn't come with it. This is only happening with one sender.
All other attachments from all other senders are received. Any ideas would
be helpful. Let me know if clarification is necessary.

RE: [qmailtoaster] clamav

2008-12-13 Thread Eric C. Broch
Jake,

Thanks for invoking input from the list!!! I think I've traced the problem
though. This is what I did.

1. I created a clamav-toaster.spec file

2. I put 2 and 2 together, from freshclam daemon failing at boot, and
found that the failure 'might' be at the line where the freshclam service
starts in '%post' section of the spec file.

3. I commented out this line in the spec file and created the source
and binary rpms and installed clamav-toaster-0.94.2*.rpm no problems

4. Ran the command 'service freshclam start' from the command line

5. Received an error in /var/log/message about SELinux issue with
freshclam.conf file. It was failing because it couldn't access the file and
find the clamd databases.

6. Ran the recommended command from the log and sealert: 'restorecon
-v /etc/freshclam.conf'

7. Ran command 'service freshclam start' again and got a different
error: 'Starting freshclam: ERROR: Can't open /var/log/clamav/freshclam.log
in append mode (check permissions!),' BUT RESOLVED THE FIRST ERROR.

8. Looked in /var/log/messages for error

9. Ran the following recommended command from log and sealert:
'restorecon -v /var/log/clamav'

10. This didn't resolve the second issue, but the sealert command
recommended this website:
http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/selinux-faq-fc5/#id2961385 where it explains
how to create a local SELinux policy module.

11. I haven't done this yet because it requires some reading and I'd
rather go the gun show. J

I was experimenting with an install of Qmailtoaster, SELinux enabled, on my
spare machine for future client use.

Again this is an SELinux issue. I don't 'think' it is a 64Bit issue.

Thanks again Jake!

[qmailtoaster] toaster specs

2008-12-02 Thread Eric C. Broch
Hello all,

Edwin Casimero question about the Qmailtoaster's specifications for serving
10,000 email clients spur my first question.

1. I am setting up a Qmailtoaster for 25 email clients but expect the
number won't increase to 50 anytime soon, if ever. Have I assumed correctly
that the standard install of Qmailtoaster is sufficient given the correct
hardware and internet connection for this application.

2. I want to setup the above 'system' for POP3-SSL clients using
Outlook and Outlook Express (OE) and let individuals take care of backing up
their own email. If I decided to us IMAP4 or IMAP4-SSL is there a rule of
thumb mailbox size.

3. If I use POP3-SSL is there a way besides setting up IMAP4 or
IMAP4-SSL accounts for each user, or even a single account, to feed spam
back to the server? I've been investigating this and have found that
forwarding to a [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED] account changes the
header of the email and 'resend' using Outlook does pretty much the same
thing as a forward. Outlook and Outlook Express are the email client
software this particular customer will be using.

Hi Eric,

Thanks!!! I did just what you said by using all RPMS for the perl install
and the spamassassin command you gave worked without a hitch. I now
understand why using RPMS is 'better' than CPAN--the dependency issue. Below
are a list of the Perl modules used by Qmailtoaster, which modules are
installed with the default Qmailtoaster recommended server install, and
which modules are not installed by default and their dependencies.

RE: [qmailtoaster] cpan & perl trouble

2008-11-28 Thread Eric C. Broch
Hello all,

I may have found the answer to my first question. The following modules are
installed with perl-5.8.8-15.el5_2.1 which is part of the CentOS 5.2 x86_64
install:

DB_File.so()(64bit)

perl(DB_File) = 1.814

perl(DB_File::BTREEINFO)

perl(DB_File::HASHINFO)

perl(DB_File::RECNOINFO)

Are these modules sufficient to do the job that an install of "perl -e 'use
CPAN; install DB_File;"' in the "cnt5064-perl.sh" would accomplish?

And, if they are sufficient, is this "perl -e 'use CPAN; install DB_File;"'
in the "cnt5064-perl.sh" install redundant?

I don't want to assume anything because I know enough to be dangerous
concerning this topic.

Thanks for your help!

Hello all,

First Question:

I was installing Qmailtoaster for a production server in combination with a
fresh network install of CentOS 5.2 x86_64. When using the perl install
script it came to this line: "perl -e 'use CPAN; install DB_File;'" and
failed because it didn't pass the install tests. I started over with another
network install of CentOS 5.2 x86_64 and the same thing happened again. I
hesitated to do a force on the module not knowing what would happen, that
is, whether the toaster would not work at some point in mail delivery
process. Does anyone have any ideas why the 'DB_File' perl module wouldn't
pass the install tests? Also I tried using the perl-DB-File rpm at DAG
repositories and it conflicted with a module from the regular CentOS perl
install-perl-5.8.8-15.el5_2.1.

Related Question:

In order to resolve the above problem I installed Qmailtoaster on CentOS 5.1
x86_64 because I had already successfully installed this combination on my
business server with no problems at all. However, during this install I had
problems while running the perl script again. This time it failed on the
module IO::Zlib something that hasn't happened in over 20 installs. I
decided at this point to install the most recent version of cpan::Bundle as
a last resort measuer and low and behold IO::Zlib and Archive::Tar where
installed, I think, at this time. I realized these modules were on my
machine when I re-ran the perl install script. I guess it bothers me, a
little, when things don't go as they should. There is always this nagging
voice that things may not me just right. This is troublesome especially when
putting a server on a production sight. Does anyone have any insights into
these problems or has anyone seen them themselves.

If needed I can reproduce the error by doing another fresh install. I
thought some may have already encountered this. Thanks for the help.

By the way, the server is a Dell Poweredge T300 Core 2 Duo E6405, 2.13 GHz
