Re: [qmailtoaster] disable mx check in chkuser

2010-04-11 Thread Rajesh M
hello allo

thanks to all for your help

recompiling qmail-toaster*.src.rpm for making changes in chkuser

my requirement was as such

when my clients use webmail and send emails to say around 50 or 100 users
and even if one of the recepients had a bad email id like a spelling
mistake in their domain name or email formatting, then the entire email
used to fail

this was pretty annoying because the error message simply used to say : no
valid mx or invalid format, without mentioning exactly which email id is
at fault

i would have preferred to remove mx checks and format checks on webmail ie
disable only for those emails that originate from my server, but this is
NOT POSSIBLE, i could only disable mx check / format checks for the entire
server which is not what i wanted

so the only solution i found was to enable
#define CHKUSER_STARTING_VARIABLE CHKUSER_START

and then recompile qmail toaster as per instructions given here

http://wiki.qmailtoaster.org/index.php/Chkuser

during the process is highly recommended that you keep the sleep time to
around 10 or 15 mins ie 600 or 900 seconds so that you can relax and do
what you need to do.

important points
when you do recompilation all folders under /var/qmail including the queue
seems to have been modified.

ensure that after you recompile, be sure to modify the tcp.smtp file and
recompile the cdb as per new chkuser settings

once again thanks to everybody

rajesh

 thanks very much jake

 one very important point

will this recompilation also reinstall / recreate the qmail queue which
 is
 the most scary part ?

 rajesh

It should not wipe out the current queue, but you would want to stop
inbound smtp services to allow the queue to clear out before performing
this anyway, just to make sure you do not remove anything that you wish
 you had not.

2010-04-06 Thread Maxwell Smart
I understand your point, but at some point they must take responsibility
for using the service effectively. If removing CHKUSER compromises
server security, which I believe it does I would find an alternative.
Eric and Jake will likely have a better solution.

By commenting #define CHKUSER_SENDER_MX the desired purpose can be achieved.
Suppose you send mail to 10 recipients and out of those 2 are not valid or
are wrong email addresses, then mail to the rest 8 recipients will be
delivered and for rest 2 email addresses you will receive message something
like example given below:

The other way of looking at this problem is using an alternative SMTP
server (smart host?).
If you use the SMTP server (ISP's one) then all e-mails are accepted and
after some time

you have those e-mails which were mistyped bounced back.

I find MX check very useful which saves my time if I have a typo in the
email address.

Also I would not disable Chkuser function.

If it's enabled during compilation, then it's enabled for chkuser in all
instances.
You can either leave it on, or turn it off for the entire server by
modifying the code during compilation.
There has been some talk of overrides in the tcp.smtp file for options
such as this, but I have not dug into the chkuser code nor tried this
myself, so I cannot say for sure it will not work

one of the group members advised me to recompile qmail toaster and enable
CHKUSER_STARTING_VARIABLE CHKUSER_START as per the guideline given below

http://wiki.qmailtoaster.org/index.php/Chkuser

my question is that will this totally remove the /var/qmail directory and
reinstall the entire qmail ?

any special care that needs to be taken ?

thanks

I think you can disable chkuser only for entire server.

Regardless Jake's answer, I would suggest you do it on a test server/VPS
first.

This will not remove the /var/qmail directory. When you modify the
package and reinstall, it *will* reinstall the qmail-toaster portions
(qmail-pop3, qmail-smtp, qmail-send, etc.)
And yes, special care does need to be taken - this is a production
system you obviously run your business off of. If you make changes
without an action plan, testing, and a revert plan, then *I* would not
want you to be running any of my services.

one very important point

will this recompilation also reinstall / recreate the qmail queue which is
the most scary part ?

It should not wipe out the current queue, but you would want to stop
inbound smtp services to allow the queue to clear out before performing
this anyway, just to make sure you do not remove anything that you wish
you had not.

[qmailtoaster] disable mx check in chkuser

2010-04-05 Thread Rajesh M
hi

i use squirrelmail

when customers send emails to a number of people from webmail then if
there is one address that is wrong the message that is shown is

#5.1.1 chkuser - can't find valid MX for rcpt domain

however the exact domain name where the problem exists is not shown

here i see two ways out

a) either i get the exact email id which has the problem, but i am not
sure whether squirrelmail needs to be modified or chkuser --- this would
be ideal.

b) the easy way -- disable chkuser MX checks for webmail users so that the
bad email id bounces back after some time. could you please guide me on
how to do this ?

thanks
rajesh

Re: [qmailtoaster] disable mx check in chkuser

2010-04-05 Thread Maxwell Smart
Rajesh,

Maybe your customers should be more careful entering the address they
are sending to? You can't make everything stupid proof.

I don't think you can disable CHKUSER nor do I think you'd want to.
This occurs not only in Squirrelmail, but in Thunderbird and other e
mail clients when the recipient is addressed incorrectly.

[qmailtoaster] disable mx check in chkuser

2010-04-05 Thread Anil Aliyan
Dear Rajesh,

Please refer to the url mentioned below to solve your problem:

http://wiki.qmailtoaster.org/index.php/Chkuser

Chkuser

From QMail-Toaster

chkuser configuration is not configurable on the fly. Configuration settings
currently in use are documented at /var/qmail/doc/chkuser_settings.h.

To tailor your chkuser settings, use the following procedure (provided by
Nick):

 # rpm -Uvh qmail-toaster*.src.rpm

 # cd /usr/src/redhat/SPECS (assuming you are using CentOS 4)

edit qmail-toaster.spec. find 'sleep 5' (should be line 606). change 5 to
300 (5 seconds to 300 seconds). save.

 # rpmbuild -bb --with cnt40 qmail-toaster.spec

(use the appropriate --with value for your distro)

When the build process pauses, open another terminal and edit
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/qmail-1.03/chkuser_settings.h to your liking. You have
5 minutes (or whatever you changed the sleep parameter to). Save your
changes and wait for the 300 seconds to expire and watch it build.

Search for

#define CHKUSER_RCPT_MX(4th statement from below in the
chkuser_settings.h file)

Modify the line to comment it.

Before change :

#define CHKUSER_RCPT_MX

After Change :

/* #define CHKUSER_RCPT_MX */

Then save the file and let the rpm rebuild

 # cd ../RPMS/i386/

 # qmailctl stop

 # rpm -Uvh --replacefiles --replacepkgs qmail-*.rpm

 # qmailctl start

That's the procedure for now.

Regards,

Anil Aliyan
