Hi, I can mainly repeat what I already said, so maybe it's boring ;) I can't wrap my mind around vertical text. Since we moved the progress information out, we already have the option to hide the mode bar, and I think we could have a small icons version in addition, though I'd then actually would consider removing the text completely instead of having vertical text. I actually like your mode icons, only the debug icon looks too similar to the android icon, at least that's what I first thought it was. (And obviously 'space invader' and 'crab' are other first impressions.) And finally what I think would be more helpful than a redesign (which would btw then need to include *much* more than just the edit mode): some evolution of the current design. E.g. going over all icons and making them more consistent / improving them, improving the look and feel of the combo boxes in tool bars, going through screens, dialogs, etc and cleaning the layouts, and things like providing a small icon version of the mode bar. I really like the small mode bar at the left side. But if text is written vertically, it should be readable from the right side! But maybe it's enough to display the text as tooltip. In this case, I'd prefer to have menu items for the mode switching too. There are all the reasons mentioned why will not accept tabs for editors in QtCreator. So please take this into account for your next proposal. I am not going to comment on the flat interface, nor the tabs, nor menus on the title bar. However: The icons are just epic, please do share then independently and let QtCreator 3.1 use them (3.0 is done by now, correct?). I get the green triangle and the red crab (why not a bug???), but the camera and the diaphragm are confounding me. What are these? The locator (I guess called search in the screenshot) should be placed at the left (either up or down), in order to fit with the mental concept that locating/searching is the first thing to be done in any sequence of actions. At least in a left-to-right writing culture, left means first. The vertical writings in the left toolbar, even if with 10 or 12pt font, are about 10% as readable as a horizontal label, even written with 5 or 6pt fonts. The (overrated) flat design removes much from the usability of 3d-hinted buttons and icons. Create menu item is surprising. Build is both much more suggestive and more traditional (thus better known/understood). Menu items denote actions (Yes, even File and Help). So, Debugging should remain Debug.
