I received this email today but I'm not sure weather is a scam/virus thing
or not. I recognise the name, but I just wanted to see what you all think
about it before I start looking more into it.

Cheers,

  Dear
Smurf,
While finishing my 6th month at the
program, I am starting to realize that in order for me to go
faster, further, and do it in a short period of time-my tricep
workouts are going to have to become my new best friend.
Although my number one goal is to rid myself of this wheelchair
and live a functional lifestyle, it will never happen unless I
first conquer this wheelchair and learn to live functionally in
it. In order for me to get up small hills, bumps, or wheel
on carpet-I must build my core stomach muscles and my tricep
muscles. To do this, I must wheel myself everywhere I go (in
and outside the gym). Because of this, it has made it a very
frustrating month. After talking with Mr. Weber, he
explained that I cannot get frustrated easily because all that is
doing is teaching my body to shut down when meeting new
challenges. I cannot get to the next level if I keep this
up. I have to be mindful of my emotions and keep a cool head
if I want to reach my goals.
Since it has been six months, I
have decided to do a recap of my accomplishments. I have rid
myself of my electric wheelchair and I am knob free on my manual
wheelchair. I can now fully feed myself and wheel over small
bumps, carpets and small inclines. I no longer have blood pressure
issues while standing up, and have gotten completely off all
medications. Most important, I have gotten mentally
stronger since I have started this program.
I also want to take this time and
congratulate Tucker Fife on standing up and taking his first steps
without leg braces on. What a true inspiration it is to
  watch Tucker achieve his goals.
  Another person I want to
congratulate is Julie for doing such an exceptional job in such a
short period of time. I really am amazed at the progress one
person can make when they set their mind to it.

  I want to take this
moment to thank each and every one of you again for the support
and prayers while I am on this journey. I made a personal decision
to use my website as a medium to keep all informed on my progress.

My injury is C6 complete and I live alone. You can get a voice activated
telephone to call a friend, neighbor or 911. I was scared at first but sometimes
just knowing that you can call somebody can prevent some panic attacks. I also
have a canine companion but that's not much help if your hose is kinked or

A product known as Baby Monitors work well when you live alone and might
need
help. Golly, a set might go for $20 bucks plus but I pick these up at yard
sales and resale shops for a couple of bucks each. They have long ranges and
can be plugged
in almost anywhere. They also have remotes with long ranges. This way you
can be
connected to a neighbor or aid in the next room, next building or next high
rise.
This way, you always have an ear that is listening at night in case of an
emergency.

Hi LQ,

Funny how kids are. My boys would drive my wife crazy with complaints, but when they were with me they were real good. It might have been the fact that they lost privileges if they complained to me about trivia things and their Mom just 'said' to them that they would lose theirprivileges. They knew I acted and Mom talked. Kids understand action. Good luck!

Both sides are trying to 'use' her now. I saw her saying to a reporter to keep politics out of it because no one asked her son if he was a Democrat or a Republican before he was sent to Iraq.It hard to imagine how she must feel, but I take her at her word. Right now it's cloudy and 79F here, and the County is under a 'Flash Flood Watch' until 6:30 P.M. We have had over 4" of rain in the last 48 hours. Some of the areas around us have had as much as 8"-10" of rain. The rain is expected to slowly end by tomorrow night. It is good because we needed the rain to fill our lakes up around this area.

Hi Dan,

Pressure relief is the most important thing you can do for a problem area. Something that I've done if I have an area of skin that has a tendency to break down is try to get the skin tokeep from cracking. I've used "Bag Balm"that the ranchers use on cows uddersto keep the skin from cracking. Sounds crazy but the lanolin in it works great! Good luck, and stay strong! http://www.bagbalm.com/

Hi Lori,

Great advice! Howis the area around where your woundswere at doing? Mine are healed but I'm working on getting a new chair so that I'm able to 'Tilt' when I'm up to keep the skin from cracking. Not having my right leg and part of my pelvic bone makes shifting harder for mebecause it takes away my positioning when I'm up. The new chair should help keep my position good while still allowing me to shift. I'm looking at the Quickie® SmartSeat chair. http://www.sunrisemedical.com/products/product_detail.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=54823PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=289507ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=104083bmUID=1123544380245

As you know ... the tailbone is a pointy area and can break open super fast. My last 2 sores were from moisture yet raged out of control and laying me up 6 months each!

So, if that can happen to me on a NON-BONY area ... keep that pressure off! Watch it intensely!

My two vulnerable areas now are where my last 2 sores were ... in the crease between my butt and thigh. It's red a lot so we alternate with skin protectants. Dave K. and I use LANTISEPTIC .. a good skin preotectant/barrier. Other times I'll use Desitin as it acts rashy red down there.

Bag Balm toughens skin too.

My son is on a Medicaid waiver. He gets
24/7 care. Not all States have waivers and some States have several types.
Check to see if youre eligible. You can be eligible for some waivers
even if you are Medicare eligible. We live in Idaho which I think is the one of the most
conservative States and we have several types of waivers. Your local
independent agency would have the info for you.

Hey Greg,

Do you remember the not-so-long-ago conversation between myself Dave K. on MediCARE and home health care
and the hell I've been through EVER SINCE Medicare changed its payment system TO the agencies in 1999?

I'll try to find the email (I keep all sent emails). I also became good friends/acquaintence by phone with the Medicare Ombudsman
to try to DO something abt this silent epidemic. I can FWD Vmy emails to her to you as well. Her hands are tied to
because Medicare has no teeth in making sure guidelines are met FOR ALL eligible patients.

They leave it to the state and the state doesn't do squat.

After 9 years of receiving AIDE help from Medicare home health agencies ... I was recently discharged from mine on the basis that "they can't find aides" when the truth is they WON'T because it NOW cuts into their profit margin. TOTALLY DISCRIMINATORY.

I've written to everyone everywhere and even to 60 minutes, Dateline, MSNBC Investigates, etc but no responses yet.

I'm now hiring for 'basic necessities' and it's costing abt $450/month. And, no, I don't qualify for long term care, waivers or any other low-income help because I'm LIVING A MORAL LIFE - meaning I'm married and a lifelong attempt to save invest has me screwed!

Greg,
I am a C2-3 quadriplegic that is not ventilator depended. I have managed to live at home alone for the last year and a half, but this was something I had to develop over a time. I also have an extensive support system, which many other people are not able to get. There is no way I would have been able to accomplish this earlier due to complications with catheters kinking, needing additional water, and general anxiety. I have had frequent problems with my catheter plugging and thus have had to call for help in the middle of the night. What I typically do is assess each problem which I have and then determine what course of action I will take to rectify this difficulty. If it is something that I need to have done, but is not an absolute emergency then I'll call a member of my family, depending on which one is available. If it is an emergency I feel can be rectified easily and one of my neighbors can handle it, I will call in a friend and have them handle the situation for m!
 e.
Obviously all emergencies which cannot be handle quickly I need to call 911. The closest family members I have are approximately 20 minutes away, but my well-trained family members are about 20 to 25 minutes away. Establishing a network of this type requires getting out and making great friendships in addition to maintaining these friendships. Not all people are able to do this due to an array of different reasons, i.e. they live in a rural area, their neighbors are not very friendly, ect.
I got the idea to do this by reading an article about a quadriplegic that is roughly the same functional level is me -- C4, but still does not have any movement of the arms or legs -- who was living by himself in St. Petersburg. I wrote to him and ask him questions, but didn't receive all the answers I thought I needed. I did discover how to take medication, but a requires access to an environmental control unit which can control your bed. I gradually discovered how to handle most of the problems I run into and vowed to try it for a little while. I figured if I was only able to handle it most of the time, I could still get someone to move in with me and I might be able to lessen their load and thereby find a more suitable live-in companion. There are situations which can be absolutely petrifying, but I have put some of these fears behind me. I did have one situation which arose one time when my brother happened to be in the house. Lightning had struck close by and had loc!
 ked up
telephone. We only discovered this when we had to call 911 due to excessive bleeding from the rectum. In all honesty I would have died if my brother had not been present. Will the situation recur, I sincerely hope not. If I do not feel well, I require a member of my family to stay over with me to make sure nothing goes wrong. I am hopeful that I will be able to maintain my health so that I am not forced to have my family stay with me frequently. I am trying to find a voice-activated cellphone which will give me the ability to call for help if I lose control of my sip-n-puff or the telephone locks up. I have not been able to get complete control of a cellphone yet and still have that problem, but I am hopeful I will be of two rectify the situation in the near future.
I hope this answers a few questions, but remember nobody situation is exactly the same. It took me over 8 1/2 years to develop the ability to do this and there are many others on this list and around the world that probably would not if given the choice. I am still hopeful my ex-wife will decide to remain in the United States permanently thereby giving me a live-in companion. FYI, we only divorced because my wife determined and wanted to remain in Germany following my accident. It is a long story, but we are still amicable and in fact she usually visits at least once a year, if not more.

[QUAD-L] Guess dat makes me a red neck republikin

2005-08-15 Thread GHenry1

Democrats, Republicans, and Southern Republicans

Question: How do you tell the difference between Democrats, Republicans
and Southern Republicans?

The answer can be found by posing the following question: You're walking
down a deserted street with your wife and two small children. Suddenly,
an Islamic Terrorist with a huge knife comes around the corner, locks eyes
with you, screams obscenities, praises Allah, raises the knife, and
charges. You are carrying a Glock .40, and you are an expert shot. You
have mere seconds before he reaches you and your family.

What do you do?

Democrat's Answer: Well, that's not enough information to answer the
question. Does this man look poor! or oppressed? Have I ever done
anything to him that would inspire him to attack? Could we run away? What
does my wife think? What about the kids? Could I possibly swing the gun
like a club and knock the knife out of his hand? What does the law say
about this situation? Does the Glock have appropriate safety built into
it? Why am I carrying a loaded gun anyway? What kind of message does this
send to society and to my children? Is it possible he'd be happy with just
killing me? Does he definitely want to kill me, or would he be content
just to wound me? If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my family
get away while he w! as stabbing me? Should I call 9-1-1? Why is this
street so deserted? We need to raise taxes, have a paint and weed day and
make this a happier, street that would discourage such behavior. This is
all so confusing! ! I need to debate this with some friends for few days
and try to come to a consensus.

Republican's Answer: BANG!

Southern Republican's Answer: BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!

You just start planning your night carefully and making sure you have
things you need where you can get to them. Telephones are nice but you have a
point. I don't mind the lonliness, but I sure hate when my bodily functions
occur 8 hours before anyone will be around to clean me up. I do have a phone and
there is usually someone to call. Panicking doesn't help.

Medical aid in this country is largely based onyour ability to pay
for it once insurance is exhausted. If you don't qualify, it is because you
aren't poor enough. I am one of those immoral people that has nothing left
and now that I'm destitute, I get plenty of help. I won't bragg because it is
beginning to look like they want to cut back the maximum hours per week
that waiver will cover. I get this sinking feeling that I'll be shopping for a
nursing home.
They don't seem to care that it would cost less to stay in the community.
The important thing is that the nursing homes get that state money and donate a
good chunk to the politician that had this idea. ( may he suffer a brain
hemorrhage and live out their days in the bedlam ward).

Ok Greg ... The easy answers are these (below .. directly from Medicare's mouth)but they'ye not even close to what you get! Agencies refuse to "put out" aides anymore. My Dr has called all over Tucson can't find one yet to take me on.

Medicare provides coverage for home health care under both Parts A and B.
In addition to having either Medicare Part A or B, you must meet a few additional requirements to be eligible for Medicare to cover home health care. You must:
* be homebound;* need skilled care on an intermittent or part-time basis;* get services from a Medicare-certified home health agency (HHA); and* have a doctor's plan of care.
Medicare defines homebound to mean that a person is generally unable to leave home and leaving home requires a “considerable and taxing effort.” Whether or not your mother qualifies as homebound is decided by a doctor’s evaluation over an extended period of time. Leaving home for short periods to get medical care or for special non-medical events, such as a family reunion, funeral or graduation would not disqualify your mother. Attending religious services or taking an occasional trip to the beauty parlor is also allowed.
Skilled care includes either skilled nursing care or skilled therapy services. Skilled nursing includes care from Registered Nurses (RNs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs). Skilled therapy includes care from licensed physical, occupational and speech therapists. Services covered include, but are not limited to, monitoring and evaluation, teaching and training, administration of medications, tube feedings, catheter changes, wound care, therapeutic exercises, gait training, and maintenance therapy.
If you arefound eligible, the agency will draw up a plan of care. This plan details the care youwill receive and the frequency of services over the next 60 days. If your mother still meets the necessary requirements after 60 days, the home health agency can draw up a new plan of care.
As long as she continues to qualify, there is no time limit on the benefit under Part B. Under Part A, she would be limited to 100 visits. No matter which part you are covered under, Medicare pays the full cost of services.
OR

As long as your doctor certifies that you're homebound and needs a skilled nurseMedicare will cover services from a Medicare-certified home health agency.
Medicare home health coverage includes skilled services, such as the nursing care, along with a limited number of hours per week of personal care provided by home health aides, such as help with bathing, toileting and dressing.
As a rule, Medicare’s home health care benefit does notcover the following:
* 24-hour-a-daycare at home;*Most prescription drugs;* Meals delivered to home;* Home maker or custodial care services, such as cooking, shopping, and laundry;* Personal care unless, as in your husband’s case, he also needs skilled nursing or therapy care.
(The Medicare hospice benefit may pay for some of these items and services. We will discuss the hospice benefit in a future issue.)
Talk to your doctor about your home health care needs. Many doctors do not know about the Medicare home health benefit. Give your doctor the name and number of a Medicare-certified home health agency (HHA) and ask him to call them and discuss the nature, frequency (how often) and duration (how long) of your husband’s home care needs.
You can get a list of Medicare-certified home health agencies in your area fromthe Yellow Pages or theEldercare Locator. You can call the HHAs directly and ask them to assess yourcondition to determine if you qualifyfor Medicare-covered home health care. Be sure to keep a list of a few other HHAs in case the first one you or your doctor calls doesn’t work out.

Dear
Smurf,
While finishing my 6th month at the
program, I am starting to realize that in order for me to go
faster, further, and do it in a short period of time-my tricep
workouts are going to have to become my new best friend.
Although my number one goal is to rid myself of this wheelchair
and live a functional lifestyle, it will never happen unless I
first conquer this wheelchair and learn to live functionally in
it. In order for me to get up small hills, bumps, or wheel
on carpet-I must build my core stomach muscles and my tricep
muscles. To do this, I must wheel myself everywhere I go
(in and outside the gym). Because of this, it has made it
a very frustrating month. After talking with Mr.
Weber, he explained that I cannot get frustrated easily because
all that is doing is teaching my body to shut down when meeting
new challenges. I cannot get to the next level if I keep
this up. I have to be mindful of my emotions and keep a
cool head if I want to reach my goals.
Since it has been six months, I
have decided to do a recap of my accomplishments. I have
rid myself of my electric wheelchair and I am knob free on my
manual wheelchair. I can now fully feed myself and wheel
over small bumps, carpets and small inclines. I no longer have
blood pressure issues while standing up, and have gotten
completely off all medications. Most important, I
have gotten mentally stronger since I have started this
program.
I also want to take this time
and congratulate Tucker Fife on standing up and taking his first
steps without leg braces on. What a true inspiration it is
to watch Tucker achieve his goals.
Another person I want to
congratulate is Julie for doing such an exceptional job in such
a short period of time. I really am amazed at the progress
one person can make when they set their mind to it.

I want to take this
moment to thank each and every one of you again for the support
and prayers while I am on this journey. I made a personal
decision to use my website as a medium to keep all informed on
my progress. This is the best way for me to communicate with all

Welcome to Dear Marci, a free, weekly newsletter designed to keep you in the loop about health care benefits, rights and options for older Americans and people with disabilities.

Dear Marciis a service of the Medicare Rights Center (MRC) (www.medicarerights.org), the nation's largest independent source of health care information for people with Medicare.A national nonprofit founded in 1989, MRChelps older adults and people with disabilities get good, affordable health care.

Topic of the Month: Long-Term Care

Long-term care, commonly abbreviated as LTC, refers to a range of medical, personal and social services designed to meet the needs of people with disabilities, chronic illnesses or ongoing limitations in their ability to function independently. LTC may be delivered at home, in a nursing home, inan adult day care facility or other facility. While Medicare does not pay for most long-term care needs, in this month'sissues we will examine the coverage Medicare does provide through the HomeHealth, Skilled Nursing Facilityand Hospice benefits.

Marci's Mailbox

* * * * * * * * * * * *

Dear Marci,

I heard Medicare wont pay for nursing home care, but my friend said Medicare covered her stay while she was recovering from a heart attack. Im getting older and considering moving out of my homewill Medicare help pay for me to live in a nursing home?

Sally (Gary, IN)

 Dear Sally,

No, Medicare does not cover long-termnursing home care. Medicare only covers limited stays in a nursing homea skilled nursing facilityto help you recover from an injury or illness. Medicare may help pay for care in a skilled nursing facility if

* you need skilled nursing care seven days a week or skilled therapy services at least five days a week (skilled carerefers to services provided by or under the supervision of trained medical personnel, such as professional nurses and therapists); and
* you have been hospitalized for at least three days in the 30 days prior to admission in a Medicare-certified skilled nursing facility.

As long as it is medically necessary, Medicare will pay the full cost of the first 20 days and part of the cost of another 80 days of care (you pay $114 a day in 2005) in a Medicare-certified skilled nursing facility (SNF) each benefit period. A benefit periodbegins the day you enter the SNF and ends when you no longer receive SNF care for 60 days in a row.

If you need help with everyday tasks, you may want to consider home care, usually a less costly alternative to residential care. Research the cost of home and community-based services in your area online using theEldercare Locator.

If you do need to make the move to residential care, another option is assisted living facilities, which are available for people who are looking for some personal services but dont require the intensive skilled care that a nursing home would provide. These facilities typically cost less than nursing homes, although costs vary with the residence, room size and the types of services needed by the residents. Most facilities charge month-to-month rates, but a few require long-term arrangements. Visit the websites listed below for more information on assisted living facilities.

If you feel you need the level of care a nursing home can provide, explore what nursing home care costs in your area and how you would pay for it. Extended nursing home stays can easily cost in excess of $5,000 a month, but fees vary widely. If your income and assets are low, find out if you qualify for Medicaid, which covers long-term nursing home care.

If your income and assets are high, you could consider purchasing long-term care insurance. While this type of coverage may limit costs for some people, it is typically not recommended. LTC insurance is expensive and the older you are when you buy it, the higher the cost of the monthly premium. See links below for more information on long-term care insurance.

You can also pay for nursing home care yourself until you have spent down your assets enough to qualify for Medicaid.

Your doctor is a good person to approach about the level of care you should be looking for. Do a little research and then raise the subject during your next visit. Together you can outline what are the best options based on your needs.

Stay tuned next week to learn more about how the new Medicare prescription drug benefit will work for people in long-term care facilities!
