[QUAD-L] Syrinx

2007-08-17 Thread RONALD L PRACHT
Silas,
Lori is the syrinx expert but me and Dan also have them. Ive had mine for
about 4 years.

Basically its complicated yet simple, you either leave it alone and monitor
the pain, or you find an expert to collapse the syrinx or put a shunt valve in.

I talked with Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colorodothey agreed to
collapse the syrinx but wouldnt take United Heathcare.price was 50,000. i
had one doc in St. Louis that would do it but he was unexperienced and he would
only perform shunt surgery to drain it.

All my other docs said the risk was too great to perform surgery on a quad
because sometimes you can lose a few levels of function during the surgery. I
was also told that most neurosurgeons wont operate unless you report lose of
function. Pain isnt a reason for surgery they say...but that is
crazy

The risk of functional loss during surgery is 10 percent. The possibility of
alleviating the pain is 50/50.

Ive spent many, many hors researching this. Have read everything on the net.
Have a whole syrinx folder.

Remember what you have is a Post Traumatic Syrinx, not just a syrinx or a
chairi malformation.

The spinal injury forms a dormant cyst, then as the years go by the cyst
fills with spinal fluid creating the syrinx. The fluid can go in but it cant go
out.

Any lifting, straining, coughing, bending, breathing can possibly make it
worse.crazy but the truth..I about cried when I was first told that.

Re: [QUAD-L] Forgot to mention I'm back

2007-08-17 Thread Quadius
Sorry this took so long Tim, but multiple things that kept me off the
Internet for the last week and a half.

I had my first colonoscopy when I was 32 years old and ironically I would
have never had one if I hadn't been paralyzed when I was 30. The ironic
part is they found one polyp which was pre-cancerous and the chances are I
wouldn't have made it past my mid-40s if I didn't have the early
colonoscopy. I guess it's one benefit to being paralyzed, but I haven't
found many others. At least not yet.

I have had numerous colonoscopies over the last several years and it seems
like the majority of them go off without too much difficulty. Down here in
Tampa the protocol or spinal cord injured patients is to start a liquid diet
on Wednesday evening and to be admitted to the hospital on Friday. Friday
evening starts off with Mag- citrate (spelling). In my experience this is
the worst part of the whole thing. On Saturday we are required to drink 1
gallon of Golightly (spelling). Thankfully by this point they are usually
able to affix a fecal matter bag to my rectum, so this isn't as bad as it
sounds. However, this last time it wasn't that easy. Oh well, I digress.

On Sunday they provide us with one more additional gallon of Golightly.
Wednesday morning we get a few enemas and then usually go into the procedure
by noon.
Hopefully this gives you an idea of what it's like. However, there is no
experience like actually going through it. :-)

Re: [QUAD-L] circulating air mattress

2007-08-17 Thread Quadius
I purchased my first mattress from a medical supply company and they charged
me a pretty sizable fee. That was 11 1/2 years ago. I just purchased one
of the inexpensive models that you can see on eBay if you search for
alternating pressure mattress. It was relatively inexpensive, but I would
think that it would develop a leak eventually.

I was lucky enough to find a very good buy a few months later, but just
recently purchased a backup to this mattress just in case. The company told
me everything was included and had been checked out, but there was one part
missing. Since I didn't purchase this through eBay I am having a little
more difficulty trying to resolve this problem. I'm not advocating for
eBay, but there are plenty of reputable vendors out there if you look
through their history sufficiently enough.

Good luck and before you bid make sure you do some research on the seller
and the product to determine if it is a good buy.

It is unbelievable that quadriplegics have to look around for their own
mattresses or have severe ulcers before the government will give them one.
It's much more cost-efficient to give all quadriplegics good mattresses than
it is to pay the medical bills later.

RE: [QUAD-L] Superpubic

2007-08-17 Thread Lester
I know that there are urologists at Craig Hospital in Denver Colorado that
know all about SCI. That is where I had my suprapubic procedure done.

I had a large bladder when I initially had my suprapubic procedure done. I
would recommend trying to find a urologist who is familiar with
quadriplegics, if that is possible. I am lucky that my urologist is very
familiar with SCI. Maybe somebody on the list can provide you with a
hospital where such a urologist might exist within a reasonable distance of
where you live.

After thinking about your question Cullen, a supra-pubic by-passes the
URETHRA I'm pretty sure so that should make no difference. It is a small
hole in your lower gut that goes directly into your bladder.

I have had a indwelling catheter since my injury 10 years ago.

I am now having problems with the wear and tear on my urethra. Has anyone on
the list had a superpubic after having a indwelling cath for a long period
of time? Does the fact that my bladder is the size of a walnut make any
difference. My urologist does not know the answer to this question, this
doesn't surprise me, since he doesn't deal with many quads.
