AMA adopts new policies on disabled patient care and medical student loan
deferment

e-mail story | print story
For immediate release
Nov. 13 2007
AMA supports reforms for disabled patients: The AMA passed new policy
supporting Medicaid reforms that would provide disabled patients with equal
access to home and community-based services so that they can live as
independently as possible. The AMA supports passage of congressional
legislation, the Community Choice Act of 2007, that would achieve these
goals. This policy was recommended to the AMA by the American Academy of
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the American Association of
Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine.
"People with disabilities who rely on Medicaid should not have to choose
between the important care they need and the ability to live independently,"
said AMA Board Member Rebecca J. Patchin, MD. "We support Medicaid reforms
so that disabled patients, together with their physicians, can decide where
the best place is to receive medical care and support based on patients'
individual needs."
AMA fights for continuation of medical student loan deferment: To help
alleviate the high debt burden for many medical residents, the AMA passed
new policy supporting reinstatement of the economic hardship loan deferment
option that many residents rely upon. The loan deferment program, known as
the "20/220 pathway," allows medical residents to defer payment on their
loans for up to three years during their residency training based on
economic hardship. Congress must act to permanently restore loan deferment
for medical residents. The AMA also supports alternate mechanisms that
better address the financial needs of medical residents.
"The average medical student graduates with a debt of more than $130,000.
Making it harder for residents to pay back this high debt can deter young
physicians from going into primary care medicine or practicing in
underserved areas where American patients desperately need them," said AMA
Board Member Samantha L. Rosman, MD.

Re: [QUAD-L] cold arm & shoulder

2007-11-20 Thread Corie Jones
I also suffer from this "cold" burning sensation, which is nerve pain. Mine is
extremely bad in my abdominal area and back. Then I have "hot" burning in my
butt and legs. On top of the burning is the needles sensation. All of it is
from our spinal cord injuries, called neuropathic or Central pain. Nothing has
helped my pain so far. I've been dealing with it for 14 years. :-(

Sorry to hear your friend is dealing with it now 20 years post.

When I lived in a nursing home for three years, I got to leave every weekend
and I had a lock on my door so people could not get in and sleep on my bed
smoking or stealing clothes. I never had a problem . They were glad to get
rid of me on the weekend, but that was then 77-80, may be different laws now..

Wow a get out of jail free card! Whpie! When I lived in an
assisted living facility for a year and with Medicare being my only
insurance... there was never any problem leaving to go with the family
during any holiday. My case manager nurse also told me that going out a
couple times a month is not a problem either.

Other things on the list are getting haircuts and going to church. Again,
whooopie but thought I would mention it. The other thing is "don't ask and
don't tell." I did that all the time ball case managers just looked the
other way being on my side.

[QUAD-L] Where to purchase a van?

2007-11-20 Thread wheelchair

Hey, wouldn't that be kewl beans! But it will not happen just that way.
Others have tried and failed by experience.
Braun conversion vans are sold thru a network of certified dealers. This is
important when you consider the upgrades and customer service that is
required as the vehicle ages. Buy locally and often get the best in service.

Best Wishes

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS! YOU CAN LEAVE THE NURSING HOME!

Residents of skilled nursing facilities can leave their facility to attend a
family holiday celebration without losing their Medicare coverage! The Medicare
Benefit Policy Manual recognizes that although most beneficiaries are unable to
leave their facility,

"an outside pass or short leave of absence for the purpose of attending a
special religious service, holiday meal, family occasion, going on a car ride,
or for a trial visit home, is not, by itself evidence that the individual no
longer needs to be in a SNF for the receipt of required skilled care."[1]

A facility should not notify patients that leaving the facility will lead to
loss of Medicare coverage. Such a notification is "not appropriate," says the
Manual.

If the resident returns to the facility by midnight, the facility can bill
Medicare for the day's stay.[2]

If the resident is gone overnight (i.e., past midnight) and returns to the
facility the next day, the day the resident leaves is considered a leave of
absence day. While the facility cannot bill Medicare for leave of absence days,
it also cannot bill the beneficiary for those days.[3]

The Center for Medicare Advocacy wishes everyone a safe, happy, healthy holiday
season.

For more information on skilled nursing facility coverage, please contact
attorney Toby S. Edelman () in the Center for
Medicare Advocacy's Washington, DC office at (202) 216-0028.

[QUAD-L] Spinal Cord Society

2007-11-20 Thread Angie Novak
Hi everybody-

Obviously this is important to all of us, and any donations you could make
would be much appreciated.

Below you'll find where you need to send your donation, (should you decide to
donate), and some other information that you might be interested in. Like
seeing if you're place of employment will match donations.

I realize most of us are on fixed incomes, so asking other people that you
know to make a donation would also be helpful. The more people involved, the
quicker spinal cord injury paralysis can be cured.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate anything you can do-
  Angie Novak
PS- If there are any questions, e-mail me. I'll find out and let you know.

  1. Any outright donations are 100% tax deductible.
  2. Make the checks out to SCS.
  3. You also should ask your people if their employers have a matching gift
program. If so, that will double their contribution. I'm sure they'd like to do
that.
  4. They also want to know what donations are connected to which people, so if
you wanted to put a note in with your donation with a brief description how you
came to donate, you can. You don't have to, but they like to know.
