Re: [QUAD-L] supra swimming

2008-04-10 Thread Danny Hearn
Hi, I used to love river float trips and did those after being a quad in the
1st 3 years---but after that time I got a supra-pubic and some said the river
water getting in there might cause an infection-I am not sure, and my last
urologist had no idea on that subject. I have not been swimming or on float
trips in over 7 years, I sure miss that. I was thinking. as often as i
get UTI's anyway's-- it may not hurt to try it.

Theres a real good reason people don't adopt American children. When they get
older and wonder who there real mom or dad is, in America, they can find
them. (Thank you Oprah, Phil, and Sally)
In America we keep records of adoptions dating back to the 1800's. People who
want to adopt a child usually do not want to face this emotional mine field
down the road. In 15 states the birth mother has been able to reverse the
adoption. In 12 states the unwed father can and has reversed the adoption, in 4
cases the birth father was even in prison.
How much can you afford in legal fees after paying $35000 for an adoption.
Adopt a Chinese child for $15000 and have none of those worries.

There are a lot of groups that help Africa. We have so many poor people in our
country not getting the medical or basic services that they need because of
budget cuts. Thank you for saying it first.

Why don't these stars adopt children in our country instead of going to Africa.

We do have a special interest in it because so many of us are dependent on

insurance companies that have done so much to reduce the quality of care in
order to increase profits should be held responsible. They are a direct
source behind forcing the best doctors and nurses from the hospitals. In
many cities across America corporations have been caught working with
insurance companies to fix prices in local areas. This has driven the best
doctors and nurses away from these markets. In Cincy they busted GE and PG
along with Ford and Anthem and Humana. After this grand conspiracy was
exposed the whistle blower was fired and each of the corporations received a
sharp tongue lashing from a federal judge that couldn't think of anyway to
punish such an act fairly...the end.
Once again proving that we need to nationalize health care if only to stop

Using your answer/logic ... then all folks who've had it and died rather
quickly (not to mention the thousands of cases we DON'T hear about) could
have been easily and quickly put on a common antibiotic (vancomycin) and
possibly a couple of others and no big deal. They should not have had to be
quarantined like they had leprosy or something and then just treated like
many of the other superbugs out there (Proteus Psedemonas for 2 examples).

So then why the big SCARE and AWARENESS of people dying or being quarantined
(with an MRSA infection) when they could just be responsive to vancomycin
and one other new antibiotics you mention?

We surely do not have to get into an argument about it ESPECIALLY because
more of us can be at risk. :-)

Re: [QUAD-L] MRSA

2008-04-10 Thread Tod E. Santee
Hi Dana...

I hope you don't mind, but I'm replying to your message on list as well as
directly to you because I think it's very important people understand why I
intentionally wrote things the way I did. (You originally posed the question
off list).

You asked, Why do you say we hope?

The reason I used we hope and hopefully with regard to eradicating the
MRSA-related osteomyelitis I have, has a lot to do with my experience with
biology... my major, the subject I teach, and how the medical community is
beginning to regard this bacteria. MRSA, as with any infection, is only
cured when every single infectious bacterium is killed by whatever means
you're using in conjunction with your own immune system. Most antibiotics work
by killing enough bacteria to allow your immune system to kill or learn to
kill the small amount remaining.

MRSA in particular is difficult because of its ability to quickly mutate...
though not as quickly as something like AIDS. And I want to note that the CA
(community-associated) MRSA is more virulent than the HA (hospital) strains,
meaning CA spreads and mutates more quickly. MRSA, especially located in bone
where blood flow --and therefore the reach of antibiotics and an immune
response-- is lessened and is much more difficult to completely eradicate...
AND difficult to confirm. Most of the time a person who once had MRSA is
considered to be (at least in a hospital setting) a former MRSA patient and
many additional precautions are often... and usually should... be followed,
even to the point of requiring every person entering that patient's hospital
room to put on gloves and a disposable isolation gown before entering and then
disposing of them each time they leave the room. This happens not only when a
person has MRSA but also when someone has a history of MRSA. It's one aspect
of controlling the spread of the bacteria to another person or even just to
another object where another person may come in contact with it.

In that respect, MRSA is somewhat like a cancer. Typically, someone isn't
usually clinically defined as cured, just like someone who had cancer is
considered in remission, not necessarily cured, just because it's far too easy
for MRSA to mutate and become resistant to whatever antibiotic or combination
of antibiotics you might be taking while also becoming dormant in nearby tissue
ready to begin a new infection. A person might appear to be cured as far as no
symptoms or cultured signs of the bacteria being found. But a real CURE as we
typically define it (i.e. all bacteria gone) is difficult to be certain of.
Even if only one bacterium remains in a dormant state, it can be reactivated
by a weakened immune system or any other number of factors.

Because it only takes a very small number of bacteria to begin a reinfection of
an area it's almost impossible to definitively say it's all gone. Even in a
wound culture using a swab of an entire wound has the possibility of missing a
single small colony that could take up an area smaller than a pin prick. So,
the culture comes back negative even though the bacteria is still present in
your tissues.

By all means, I am NOT saying it isn't cured or CAN'T be cured... I'm just
saying the possibility for missing a potential infection exists.

To answer your question specifically regarding the reason I keep saying
hopefully when I'm referring to myself and my situation, I had what's called
refractory osteomyelitis with MRSA. Refractory osteomyelitis is a bone
infection that remains after all other antibiotic and surgical options have
been exhausted. MRSA, a gram-negative anaerobic staphylococcus CAN be killed.
The difficulty is in determining whether it has all been killed or not. It's
almost impossible to tell for certain... especially in more dense bone tissue
where blood flow is limited.

You are correct in that I did learn these things in a way I wouldn't choose.
However, because I learned them this way and because of my general knowledge of
biology plus several friends who are doctors who have had to deal with this, I
would have to say what I've learned is quite accurate. (Not to sound arrogant.)

I hope that answers your, and some others', questions.

(BTW: Do me a favor everyone, and stay away from this crap if you can!)

Best regards,

Subject: [QUAD-L] dangers

Hi Everyone.

At the beginning of this week, I was in Indianapolis Ind. for a
Governor Board meeting. My CAN and I had some hours before the meeting, so
we went to the mall in downtown Indianapolis. While we were in the mall she
stopped because, this guy was trying to sell make up in the middle of the
mall. So, I stopped with her to listening to him trying to sell us the make
up. All at once she had seen that someone had stolen her over night bag that
was on the back of my wheelchair. Well she started running down the mall
trying to find her bag. I went after her and we found a policeman. She told
him that someone had stolen her over night bag from me and that she was
angry that someone was so hard up that they would steal from a disability
woman. The policeman told her it happens all the time.

You might be wondering way I'm telling you this story. I do not want it
to happen to you. When you are out in the public be aware we are vulnerable
to those who are dangers. My CAN told me to get a little bell on my book bag
then if someone tries to take it I will hear it and just back up and nock
them down and start yelling. I know I will be ready for anyone who tries to
steal something from me.

my problem has been finding real colloidal silver. I found a place online that
gives the truth about it. It also lists brands that are real and their quality.
http://www.silver-colloids.com/Reports/reports.html
They have a list of the brand names tested and which ones are real.
Some of it is harmless water. Some of it is dangerous. Fortunately, some can
really work.

I've been taking Colloidal Silver for about 2 weeks and I
got rid of a nasty uti in about 4 days but felt better after the second

Just so you know I will be taking it in the

 Merrill,
I had read some stuff on here about that particular product, but I haven't
really checked into it yet. This particular news article was being talked
about on the news the other night. The reason it came to my attention is
because the active ingredient in the fake cure for AIDS was Colloidal Silver,
 even though
they didn't mention it in the news article.
I am really wondering if it works.

have always
believed that when something is going wrong with my body or life, that there
must be something I can do, not do, or buy. I drank around $200.00 worth
of Colloidal Silver several months back which I boasted to have been
  successful. Perhaps it was.

Your story sounds about the same as mine. My husband surely did not think
he would have to put in and take out tampons on a monthly basis but it is
routine for him now. In fact... with my higher injury... he might as will
have the monthly and not me! Even if he is not feeling well... mine still
comes in he has no choice. I don't have a caregiver right now to do that
sort of thing so he is truly my savior. In that regard as well as many
others!

For those of us who have Gmail accounts... have you noticed that any browser
account keeps track of what you are talking about? When you go to check
your mail... glance over the right-hand side and you will see all the ads
about what we are talking about! That is why I hate browser accounts but
Comcast is not working with Eskimo (the quad list ISP) again so here I am
over here checking my e-mails! Ugh!

Whoever is out there reading these things in cyber land... we DON'T LIKE the
new Tampax! Obviously whoever makes them does not use them!

will never come back. Well, shortly after that it did come back. Now, I
wish it would go away. Couple of things. One is that I have a 33-year-old
caregiver, who had to have a total hysterectomy due to cancer. She is
cancer free and we are always joking about her not having a period anymore
and how I wish I didn't. Also, I never thought my husband would be putting
in a tampon for me, much less showing a caregiver how to do it. I use a
tampon during the bowel and shower program. Thank God we have a good sense
of humor. I have to wonder if I'm looking forward to menopause. As I'm
normally cold, and I wonder how the hot flashes are, besides the lack of
bleeding. I guess I'll have to wait and see.
