RE: [QUAD-L] suprapubic
I've had mostly good experiences I rarely get UTI's now. I switch from my night bag to leg bag when I get in my char and just monitor my leg bag as my bladder is about the size of a walnut now... I use silver impregnated catheters to help prevent uti's, catheter gets changed every two weeks. Maintenance is as follows: Leg bag: rinse with diluted bleach after every time you use the leg bag. Night bag: rinse with diluted bleach after you drain it and your changed to the leg bag I've had mine for about 6.5 years now.. I just had mine removed in May to be replaced with a urostomy. For the first 15 years, I had great results. Much like many of the other guys and ladies. It's pretty easy to take care of the SP and I would have to say it's one of the better ways to manage the bladder if you are a quadriplegic incapable of catching yourself. Over the years I was told to change the catheter every two weeks, every three weeks, and ultimately every four weeks. I did have a doctor who did a pretty extensive experiment over a couple of years and determined that it was best to change the catheter every two weeks. They have empirical data which indicated there was much less incidence of UTIs, but for most of the time I liked changing my catheter every three weeks. I had to have my SP removed because my bladder atrophied to the point where it would not drain properly and I was in constant pain. As I said before, that is not the norm. Many guys are able to go for 30+ years without any significant difficulties. Cleaning the bags is important and I really wouldn't advise plugging the SP unless you're trying to use an external catheter and intermittently draining the excessive urine out of your bladder. Hopefully I didn't confuse you, but I tend to think it's a good procedure if you have a decent urologist who is familiar with quadriplegic. [QUAD-L] sore
Hi Everyone, I just had a small pressure sore open up on my right ankle.I would like to ask you all which is your first line of defense when this happens? Thank you! Paul
Re: [QUAD-L] suprapubic
Ive had a suprapubic for about 10 yrs now went from latex to silicone even found a silione catheter thats as flexible as latex since found out I was allergic to the latex. I get mine changed every 3 wks if I wait for 4 wks I have bad spasms n some AD. I also take a pain pill before I go so my body is more relaxed. I use a legbag during the day and bedbag at nite. I usually just rinse them good with hot water, but lately been gettin alot of uti's so been rinsing them with vinegar n hot water. Also if I get clogged I use vinegar n water to irrigate. Also talk with your urologist get him to work with you how often you should get it changed like if 4 wks is to long go for 3 wks see if its better also maybe take a pain pill or maybe some baclofen before you get it changed. Also since youve just had it done your body is just getting use to a foreign object in a different place and everyones different and some peoples body might have a harder time excepting it.
