[QUAD-L] anniversary
blah blah blah, 26 years, blah blah. on to the next one... this got me thinking though what i've done in that 26 years, starting from a 17yr old kid... -finished high school with my class -went to college -got a van to drive -drove across country -opened a business (closed a business) -got a computer job -got laid off and rehired 3x -found a better computer job -got married (divorced) -had child -bought house (foreclosed) -found better computer job So now just working and parenting a 10-yr old and up to my ears in debt. I suppose there are a few things I would have done differently! Todd D C6
Re: [QUAD-L] Paralyzed man rescued from burning van
I drove a Quad friend of mine home, years ago, from where we got our vans converted. He needed to drop off his van and of course the keys. When we got over to the key drop-box we realized it was the type one needs to push with one hand the lid open and with the other hand drop the key in the box. After some discussion we decided John would park his chair right next to the drop-box to drop his key and I would park my chair as close to his as possible and reach over to open the lid with one hand while hooking my other hand on the push handles. Well, we BOTH got our Quad fists hands stuck in the drop-box. It was the type of situation where the harder you pull the tighter the trap. After laughing for 10 minutes or so we started trying to figure out how we were going to get help on a Sunday afternoon on the side of a big warehouse building. Oh, BTW it was drizzling lightly. Out of curiosity - what would had all you guys have done in that situation? I'll tell you what we did later. Re: [QUAD-L] source for wheelchair friendly clothing
I have used a military's type of poncho from the very beginning, the main thing you want to do is to keep it from blowing up like over your head. I use a couple metal spring clamps to hold it down in front of me and then tuck the sides under my elbows. Many online retailers and a few local military surplus stores should have them for about $20. [QUAD-L] Suprapubic catheter question
I had a a scare with autonomic dysreflexia earlier. My blood pressure was 200/111 with a heart rate of 43. Now I'm fine though at133/76 75 but still I'd rather not start my day that way. Luckily my nurse caught before something really bad happened!. My catheter stopped draining last month also... :( Has anyone else had their catheter stop out of the blue even though your output is clear? What do you do to prevent it? I would hate to irrigate more often because I'm at the limit my insurance medi/medi covers. I drink crystal light also..

[QUAD-L] bed question
Just browsing for a better bed... Anyone know a way to raise and lower an entire queen sized bed? The flexfit plus that sleep number sells only does the head and foot of the bed because I need that functionality. Also my current mattress is a rotating pressure mattress to prevent bed sores. What is everyone's thought on sleep number beds? I currently have a hospital bed that can raise and lower the head, foot and entire bed. I've been sleeping in an adjustable hospital bed for the last seven and a half years and would really like a bigger bed that isn't a little hospital bed.
Re: [QUAD-L] door motor
I dont have a dodge van. I have found door motors for my chevy express, gmc safari and ford e150 by cross referencing the numbers online and then ordering the motor either from ebay or advanced auto. I got my last motor on ebay for 26.00. It depends if your caravan came with the door motor from the factory or its an older van that still has a power window motor running it. I believe on an 02 its not a factory option. The first step is pull the door panel off and remove the motor to look for the part number. All my vans the door motor is actually just a power window motor made to operate a door. Once the motor ia removed look for a part number. Then remember there is a left side motor or right side..thats easy to determine. Go online and order the motor. If you get the motor out , I can help you locate the number. Re: [QUAD-L] Spouse as Caregiver?
My caregiver history includes many different scenarios. As a C4-5 quad, It started out of rehab with my parents. They did everything from chauffeur to bowel/bladder care. I was very fortunate to have my Mom @ home fiull-time to take care of me on top of everyday family of 5 stuff. Over the 4-5 years there were very challenging times because I was 15 and all of the crap surrounding my new quad life came out on them. Both Mom Dad did very well not venting on me, but I'm certain it added stress into their relationship. Off to college for the next 4-5 years where I hired on average 2 new attendants every semester. (no, I was not Richie Rich, every dollar came from the state Vocational Rehab) My secret was and is, develop a routine for everything and stick to it. Then, just plug willing people into the routine. Make them follow your routine or fire them. Yes, it's hard, but, for me, it's what I had to do to be as independent as I wanted to be. At the end of college I married my first wife. It was actually a condition for her to marry me that we have at least one attendant. She claimed that it was to keep her from thinking of me as a job. Ten years later; a sexless, turbulent relationship, ending in her cheating and my moving out. It was a constant trial to keep good attendants when they see my wife not doing what they considered wifely duties. Lesson to learn here... do not marry under conditions or prenup. They bring a black cloud into the relationship. One year later I re-married to a woman who cares for me year-round. There are days when she is tired mentally and/or physically, but we push through with communication and love. The best thing I've learned, just as we learned in rehab; do as much for yourself as you possibly can. Looking back over the past 25 years I have had over a hundred caregivers. I'll continue to do what is necessary remain independent and so should you. Get connected to your state's Voc Rehab and get as many assistive devices as you can to take the pressure off your caregiver; lifts, chairs, etc. Get employed, there's something out there for everyone. Hi group, I'm not comfortable saying much about my relationship status here because it doesn't just stay within the community and not end up on the web. I can say I have much experience in this area. Basically It comes down to no matter who cares for you be it a wife, parent, love one, or stranger do everything possible that you can do yourself. For the things you can't do yourself be patient, understanding, and grateful to those who are helping you. That doesn't mean you have to just let them do as they please with your care. Be clear with them what your full needs are. Be organized and make things go as easy as possible. IF AT ALL POSSIBLE GET OUTSIDE HELP. If you can pay someone else or get state help to do even small stuff, I think it's a great idea. Anything you can do to give your primary caregiver a break is recommended. Especially if it's someone you care about being in your life for a long time. If your in a dating or marriage situation and want it to last you must do as I said previously. As well as continually tell them how special and glad you are that they are willing to share all aspects of your life together. Being disabled means we have to work twice as hard to be romantic, sexually creative, and just plain nicer than normal people if we want love to last. Divert the care they have to do with fun, love, and laughs. Oh, and during your care periods try to keep things lite and fun when ever possible. When your together not doing quad and house stuff try really hard to make those times special. Those times can out way the quad times. My 2 cents, Donald C5-C6 22 years post
Re: [QUAD-L] Suprapubic catheter question
This did happen to me a multitude of times. Did your nurse have to change the catheter or was she able to get the flow going without changing it? The times where mine has stopped flowing and there was no problems with sediment, it was because the catheter had become attached to the wall of my bladder and my bladder had atrophied so badly that this became a serious problem for me. The advantage I had was I can feel when my bladder gets backed up, so I can call for help much quicker. This happened when I was in the wheelchair and in the bed. You can tell if it is a problem with atrophy of the bladder is you can simply lift up the bag or the tube and the catheter starts draining right away. Here in San Antonio, I'm on a list for the SCI units to call when they have a new SCI patient getting ready to go home. I act as a mentor and provide the patient and family as much advice as requested. If it's not already in place, push for it, do it yourself.
