[QUAD-L] staying warm in bed with a heating pad
Hey quad peeps, I have situation that I get really cold here in the Midwest and my father is only willing to turn the heat up to 73. I have a large master bedroom and use one of those oil filled heaters that takes hours to really feel anything, then your to hot. I actually put a thermometer next to my tv so I know what the actual temp is in the room. This kinda works but I freeze at times. I tried a heating blanket years ago and got burned when the blanket got wedged between my knees. Somebody on the list had a heating pad trick. Im thinking maybe put is under my upper body where I still have feeling, maybe partially under pillow. Anybody mastered this trick. I actually get so desperate sometimes I do pushups to heat myself up, lol. Cold in Misery...I mean Missouri Ron
Re: [QUAD-L] staying warm in bed with a heating pad
Hello Ronald, I purchased one of those small floor heaters that get their heat from some kind of infrared heating element. It heats up pretty quickly, and has a thermostat on it, so it will turn off and on, depending on how hot/cold the temperature is inside my bedroom. I think it cost me about $120. [QUAD-L] Interesting article on IFLScience Man With Severed Spinal Cord Walks Again After Cell Transplant
Here is an Interesting article on IFLScience albeit two days old I thought I'd share. Man With Severed Spinal Cord Walks Again After Cell Transplant October 21, 2014 | by Stephen Luntz A man paralyzed for two years is now walking again, albeit with a frame, after a transplant to his spine. The treatment, to be published in this month's Cell Transplantation, has been under discussion for a while, but has only now shown success. In 2010, Darek Fidyka was repeatedly stabbed, rendering him paralyzed from the chest down. Fortunately, however, his nose was unscathed. Olfactory ensheathing glia (OEGs) surround olfactory axons, the nerve fibers that conduct electrical charges from the nose to the brain to allow us to smell. What makes them of interest to spinal patients is that OEGs maintain their capacity to promote new neurons into adulthood. While some reptiles can grow new tails, for mammals the capacity for regrowth is lost in most of the nervous system. Being an olfactory receptor neuron is stressful, however, as they are forced to respond to the chemicals drawn in with every breath. These neurons usually survive just six to eight weeks, and require constant replacement if we are not to lose our sense of smell. OEGs keep forming paths for new receptor neurons to transmit their messages. This capacity for regrowth has inspired spinal researchers frustrated by the fact that the mammalian central nervous system does not regenerate axons. The idea is that if OEGs are transplanted into the spinal cord at the point of injury, damaged axons will start to restore themselves. Animal experiments have produced axon regeneration and even enabled injured rats and dogs to run again After the attack Fidyka was put on an intensive exercise and physiotherapy program, without success. After two years, he was selected as the subject for the OEG transplant trial, a joint operation between University College London and Wroclaw University Hospital, Poland. Cells from one of his olfactory bulbs were cultured for two weeks before being transplanted through 100 micro-injections around the scar site. [source: imgur.com] To walk again Darek Fidyka had to have one of his olfactory bulbs removed and cells from it cultured. BBC TV current affairs program Panorama was invited to film his response to the treatment, and the investment has not been in vain. At first, despite five hours of exercise, five times a week, Fidyka showed no response, but at the three month mark he noticed that his left thigh was putting on muscle. After six months he was able to take faltering steps with the assistance of leg braces and parallel bars. As the program prepares to go to air, Fidyka is able to walk on his own with the help of a walking frame. Some bladder, bowel and sexual function has also returned. Progress continues, and Fidyka told the BBC, I think it's realistic that one day I will become independent. University College's Professor Geoff Raisman, who discovered OEGs, described Fidyka's small steps as more impressive than man walking on the Moon. http://www.iflscience.com/health-and-medicine/nasal-leads-paralyzed-man-walk
RE: [QUAD-L] staying warm in bed with a heating pad
I use a heating pad when I first go to bed, and it turns off after 2 hours. But I have no feeling below my shoulders, and I found that I do not benefit from a electric blanket. I also use one of the snakes that you heat in the microwave on top of my head when I first go to bed (just like an infant keep the head warm). My problem is I get cold during the day when we have no sunshine, so I bought a small radiant heater from harbor freight which I can set at 400 watts, and the visual radiant helps me to feel warm. It is only $29.95 so was very economical. I think it's more of a perceived problem for me than actual cold. Thank goodness we have 292 days of sunshine a year. I taught myself to write with a felt tip pen. Then about 15 years later I went a night school class to learn calligraphy ... I LOVE a challenge. I use a weighted (with beads) heating pad that I also put on my chest, or my shoulders if I'm on my side. I put it in the microwave for only 10 Seconds, but when I'm up and have bad neck pain, I put it in the microwave for 30 seconds. I live in Northern New Jersey. Re: [QUAD-L] Anniversary and good Samaritans
I hit my 30th anniversary of my injury, and I am still surprised how kind and helpful people can be. Dropped my cell phone? The man eating his lunch on the park bench offers to help. Struggling to carry snacks to one of my son's soccer games? Three people simultaneously offer to help. Girlfriend trying to hold chair up stairs in Mexico? Car with dead battery? Chair front caster caught on sprinkler head? Help, help, and more help. In 30 years I was robbed once and helped 1000 times. I have faith in people. It just so happened that we were out and about that day and we are having a beautiful Indian summer with highs in the sixties and no severe freeze so far. We finished shopping at Sam’s Club and I decided to just roll over to the next place we were going which was only seven or eight blocks away. My wheelchair has been behaving itself quite well so I felt confident I could beat the others to the next store. I took off at a good clip (for an omega track) and realized when I got there that the store had moved another eight or 10 blocks away a couple of months ago. No problem, except that the wheelchair decided to quit right as I was crossing the street. I was able to flag down a pedestrian who restarted my chair. A little more cautiously I kept on going, stopped again, a couple of people came over to ask if I needed help-of course I did. Now I am being very cautious as I am realizing it is quitting when I try to go faster. I’ve already given up on the challenge of beating everyone else to the next store, just want to get there without breaking down in the middle of the street again. I finally reach the parking lot of the next shopping mall, which is quite empty, and get out to the middle of the lot. Stopped again, this time there are no pedestrians, so I resign myself to waiting until somebody misses me and comes to find me, because they are in Walmart and the cell phones don’t work to reach them. Suddenly a car veers over and a young man gets out. As he is walking over three more cars come over and everyone gets out. I guess I was noticed, because they all want to know if I’m OK and do I need help. The young man gets to me first, starts my chair off, and I thank everyone, and leave for the store. Then I noticed that the young man’s car is following me. He escorts me to Wal-Mart, and then smiles and says have a great day and drives off. Moral of the story, move out west to find plenty of good Samaritans. Have a great day everyone, I sure did. Joan

I'm sorry I didn't see and respond to this earlier. I made the switch to Mac a few years ago. I was worried about Dragon since its updates on the Mac trail those for Windows (a legacy, I'm told, of when the product for Mac was a separate company). I needn't have worried. Dragon has been more stable and speedy on my Macs. All of the other tweaks and customizations available on Macs translated into huge gains in my productivity and my ability to use computers without harming myself, i.e. carpal tunnel, spinal fatigue, etc. If you made the jump, I hope it went well.
