[QUAD-L] Dawn saga (my neighbor
Any of you remember me telling you stories about Dawn, a C-6,7 Quad neighbor of mine who lives in the building? She has been injured 25 years now and the entire time has never ever worn a pair of shoes, time caught up to her. Her toes are seriously curling underneath and she got a bad infection. Then on May 26th she went into the elevator frontwards and smashed her toes. The next day when the nurse came they were bleeding and she told her to go to the ER. They admitted her immediately and then 1 week and a day later they did surgery to remove a few toes from each foot because she had MERSA in the bone. They put heavy duty big cast on her both feet and sent her to a rehab facility. Yesterday she had a doctors appointment at 4:30 to have a cast removed. Things look fine but the casts have to stay on for 2 more weeks. The transport company did not show up until 9:15pm she waited, with an aide, for 3 1/2 HOURS!!! Got back to the rehab center at 10:00pm. Bobbie Smile Everyday
Re: [QUAD-L] Sleep boots
I used to wear them religiously, but then I had a little difficulty with skin integrity on my heel. You have to watch them for any degradation in the padding. I still wear them occasionally when I feel like my Achilles tendon is allowing my foot to drop a little too much. I wear something akin to the new Sketcher's (spelling) steel toe work shoes. They really helped my feet and I find that wearing a simple bunny boot is sufficient when I go to bed to protect my delicate heels. My podiatrist strongly suggested that wear them every night and to start looking into a boot that I would wear all day and well. I asked if he could help me get them and he said I don't do that.or I can't help you with that. Which is Pure bull shit. He told me go just go yo Kessler. I have some boots but they are from 1999 and I'm quite sure things have improved since then. I have drop foot problems from being a Quad for over 42 years He also suggested I go see an Ortopidic Bobbie Smile Everyday
[QUAD-L] problems with colostomy wafer
I hope you guys can help me out. I have had a urostomy for more than three years now and have no problems with that wafer leaking or urine getting underneath the wafer. I am, however, having nothing but difficulties with the colostomy wafer. First thing to note is my urostomy wafer as a small room on the inside with quite a bit left over to it here to the skin. The colostomy one, on the other hand, has a lot bigger ring in the middle of it. I believe it's 57 mm or 2 1/4 inch. Have a small indentation at one corner of my stoma and therefore they say I need stoma paste. We've never had to use this on my urostomy, so were not sure exactly how much to apply. The last two days we have had the colostomy wafer leak and it appears like the fecal matter is immediately seeping under the wafer and compromising the integrity of my skin. Not to mention it stinks to high heaven. Any advice on how you guys do it or suggestions would be welcome. As far as my urostomy, we basically use two or three skin preps, but they told us we really didn't need to use them for the colostomy. Last night we decided to go ahead and use skin prep on the colostomy as well as a little bit of stoma paste where the intention is on my stoma. I want to thank you in advance for the help. Normally I'm able to call on a nurse friend of mine who lives down the road to help me out, but she's out of town on vacation right now. Quadius
[QUAD-L] Have no fear Ron is still here.............
Hey everybody just wanted to let those that care know Im still here and fighting for myself as well as my father. He contracted spinal meningitis from a cortisone shot to the sacral area of the back 14 days ago. My mother comes every other morning to help with the ol bowell routine, everything else can be rigged, put off or done later. I was scared at first, but Im getting tougher and figuring out more things I can done on my own. I have to make sure there are no mistakes made on my part, like a slip or something of that nature. Im hoping my dad will make at least 80 percent recovery at the month mark, but we had a setback and his kidneys stopped worked from the pic line antibiotics (vacamyacin). From what I speculate when your body goes from tons of antibiotics from a pic to nothing, your body has to send its own cells to fight whats left of the infection and in turn the body looks more tired. I should see him get better or worse in the next few days. We as quads are unrecognized warriors, and the battle is survival. I always wondered why disabled persons looked weathered and beaten when they reach the 20, 30, 40 year mark.now I totally understand. like someone on the list said, who wants to go into the grave with a perfect beautiful body anyway? Nan, this is the first time I have seen this. I had no idea you were going through such an ordeal. It sounds like you had a very close call. I can't do anything but pray for you, but I will certainly do that. You and I are soul-buddies, you know. How exactly are you at this moment? Hi Nan, So sorry to know that you have been having all these problems. I have had similar issues so I know how it feelsI have also gone to the wound so many times. I may write so close to the bone I had osteomyelitis, requiring surgery last year that has never completely healed. I have to wear a hard splint all the time and have lost range of motion. we older quads can have many complications. It is wonderful for us to be able to share our stories and learn from each other. I am so grateful for everyone on the list, Especially you Nan. Thank you so much for reposting as I did not see this email. Love from a fellow member of our list. I am happy to be alive even with all the problems we have. Dana (C4-5 quad 6/27/74 Prairie Village Kansas) I am so glad that you have made it to 47 years post quadriplegic.
