Yes to your questions. I hope the Uro is well informed with Quads. This
is important. If they or you have any questions, you can contact Craig

I usually charge when the meter is one-half or lower. Or when I have something

I had wet batteries like those and I was helped into a friends house through

Re: [QUAD-L] UTI

2016-03-25 Thread Quad Dude
Dr. Ron,

BP problems are common with SCI, whether it be attributed to a UTI, bowel
issue, skin sore, and positioning (laying flat or sitting upright) to name
several. When I have a bad UTI, my BP typically plummets. I spent 5 days in
the hospital last month with a bad UTI that went septic and caused septic
shock and dropped my blood pressure dangerously low.

I have been on and off of prophylactic antibiotics for UTI prevention
during the 28 years of my injury. It's always a low dose (half or less the
usual) ranging from as often as daily to as little as twice a week
depending on the urologist (I've had 3 over the years). One thing each
urologist agreed on is if you opt for taking a prophylactic antibiotic, it
should be changed periodically, perhaps every 3, 6, or at least 12 months
to prevent your body from developing resistance to it.

I have periodically used cranberry tablets in various dosages throughout my
years of injury. I frankly have no idea whether they help or not. If they
are affordable for you they cannot hurt.

The absolute best things for UTI prevention are using good sterile/hygiene
practices and a routine schedule of catheter changes and irrigation if
applicable.

I hope this helps…

Steve - C4, 28 years

P.S. I'm not a doctor, but I have stayed at a Holiday Inn (if you remember
the commercials). :-)

Re: [QUAD-L] UTI

2016-03-25 Thread Carolyn Boyles

I know this works for kidney stones and it may help for UTIs.

I'll give you links to the webpages for the items you need. I'm not
associated with any of the mentioned companies. I did this research many
years ago for my husband who gets kidney stones.

1. The first item you'll need is the system in which to make the tea you
are going to drink:

http://www.amazon.com/Mr-Coffee-2-Quart-Iced-Maker/dp/B5OTXI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1458947166&sr=8-1&keywords=mr.+coffee+iced+tea

Buy this at any retailer of your choice that sells it. Also buy the
filters that go into the basket. They're regular paper coffee filters.

2. The second item you will need is tea, but not Lipton or most anything
sold in grocery stores because that type of tea causes kidney stones.
What you need is Rooibos tea. Various companies sell this such as The
Repubic of Tea, health food stores, etc. Buy whatever flavor you would
like to drink (without caffeine).

3. The third item is the sweetener of your choice. I'm not a fan of
artificial sweeteners, but go with what works for you.

4. Finally, the most important item in this is ground watermelon seeds:

http://heritagestore.com/watermelon-seeds-cut-4oz-food.html

A few other companies sell them, but this is the cheapest I have found
them. The packets of seeds need to be refrigerated after being opened,
but they last forever.

Brew the tea according to the instruction and add about 1/4 cup of the
seeds to the filter basket. You will need a lot of sweetener because the
tea by itself is very bitter. This has saved my husband from lithotripsy
many times and has cured a few UTIs over the years.

[QUAD-L] Incomplete quads -- ability to gain strength?

2016-03-25 Thread Gail Overton
My husband is an incomplete C3 quad able to move every muscle except still weak
after almost 1.5 years of therapy (started out at 6 hours per week and now up
to 10 hours per week). People tell me ten hours of therapy per week is not
enough, especially when they only work on one muscle group 15 minutes say 2 to
3 times a week. Are there any “incomplete” quads out there with this type of
experience and trying out therapy only to find they cannot get stronger? HELP!

2016-03-25 Thread Danny Espinoza
This was what they said for gel batteries specifically and is working great for my Permobil M300. Ever since I started doing what they suggested my batteries have never died. When I was charging only when my chair would get low my batteries stopped holding their charge and would die fast after a while. This is definaely working for me and my chair battery lasts me all day now and barely loses its charge. This is taken directly from my manual at http://www.permobilus.com/manuals/53.pdf page 82 of 112     "Owner ́s Manual Permobil M300Handling82 Battery ChargingThe amount of charge in your batteries depends on a number of factors, includ-ing the way you use your wheelchair, the temperature of the batteries, their age and the way they are made. These factors will affect the distance you can travel in your wheelchair between charging the batteries. All wheelchair batteries will gradually lose their capacity as they age.The most important factor that reduces the life of your batteries is the amount of charge you take from the batteries before you recharge them. Battery life is also reduced by the number of times you charge and discharge the batteries. To make your batteries last longer, do not allow them to become completelydischarged. Always recharge your batteries promptly after they are discharged. If your battery gauge reading seems to fall more quickly than usual, your batteries may be worn outCAUTION!If the batteries should be drained completely, it is important that you charge them up again as soon as possible since a complete loss of charge reduces the lifespan of the batteries." -Danny

To every Rule, there are some exceptions. I've read a couple stories here that
exceeded the normal and that is good. Since wheelchairs ARE medical devices,
why risk one's mobility by exceeding the normal? Always have a plan B or
backup device.

When batteries, the energy inside the battery is the size of golf balls, with
each overnight charge the size of the energy is reduced to the size of marbles,
until each battery can hold almost 14 volts of energy. As the battery ages...
those marbles of energy reverse back to the size of golf balls. The batteries
will continue to hold 12 volts, but lose the ability to retain amperage.

Best Wishes

I remember my first power chair in 1979, an E&J that used wet cell batteries.
They would boil over and make an unreal mess. My battery box looked like a
glazed donut, acid everywhere. Had to buy new ones every year. The good thing,
they weren't too expensive… about $90 for a set. And my insurance paid 90% of
that. Have things ever changed!….

2016-03-25 Thread wheelchair
To every Rule, there are some exceptions. I've read a couple stories here
that exceeded the normal and that is good. Since wheelchairs ARE medical
devices, why risk one's mobility by exceeding the normal? Always have a
plan B or backup device.

When batteries, the energy inside the battery is the size of golf balls,
with each overnight charge the size of the energy is reduced to the size of
marbles, until each battery can hold almost 14 volts of energy. As the
battery ages... those marbles of energy reverse back to the size of golf
balls. The batteries will continue to hold 12 volts, but lose the ability to
retain amperage.
