[QUAD-L] So exactly where we to do?

2017-03-20 Thread Lori Michaelson
I will NOT take any antibiotic unless I have severe symptoms. I only had 5
bladder infections (no kidney infections) in the first 20 years after my
injury. Then I began to get more. Cipro used to be my savior but I do not
take it often.

I took Levaquin once but, OMG, I had the worst internal pain from my job to
my lower extremities. This was 2014 or 2015. I took in only one other time
but did not have those problems.

Over the last year, since my urethra has been ruined and until I can get my
surgery done... I have had several bladder infections and I wouldn't take
any antibiotics unless the pain was too overwhelming. I always had a
culture and sensitivity test prior to make sure I was put on the right
antibiotic.

Since my husband passed away, I have had more bladder infections but the
only thing that is different as caregivers doing my bowel regimens and,
with a female with a Foley catheter, offers more of an opportunity to get
an infections with different caregivers. I didn't have any infections
between 2006 and when my husband passed away (June 2012) so they began
after that.

I do not trust labs anymore either. I am waiting on the results of one
right now and they should have gotten back to me by now. A urine specimen
that was taken to the lab before that ... a week and a half before that...
(because of my severe symptoms) never got back to me and when my urologist
went to get the results the lab said they had never gotten any urine
specimen with my name and date of birth so they had to do it over again.

In the meantime, and because I was in so much pain, I was put on 5 days of
Cipro (500 mg twice a day) until a follow-up one could be taken... the one
I am currently waiting upon!

I don't scare easily and I HATE to be on any medications and, like I said,
I will not take any antibiotics unless I can't stand the pain anymore. I
have been on and off Cipro and other antibiotics for over 37 years now but
more of them needing after the year 2000 when I began to have bladder
stones. They were easily removed but my urologist wanted me on IV
antibiotics because of all the tools in my bladder.

You hear all about the side effects of over a million side effects of
medications on commercials for those looking to sue doctors. While, on the
flip side, for quad who get bladder infections and need them... what do you

Gail, that's why I use sip and puff for my wheelchair and computer access.
I have very little neck muscle movement. I had tried a chin control but it
just hurt my neck and jaw.

[QUAD-L] WOW I'm back

2017-03-20 Thread Danny Espinoza
I just spent 2 weeks in the hospital because of a reaction to coumadin that
was causing me to swell and eventually an infection “the reason I went along
with bad spasms” The spasms were so bad it was causing my diaphragm to spasm
and me to not breathe “I coded twice”. While in the hospital I had a
miracle! My feet were touching the end of the bed and I realized I could
feel temperature!!! My family even covered my eyes and I was able to
guess which foot they were squeezing! I’ve been dealing with the swelling
for years but a few years ago I started getting these ½ dime sized red
circles come to find out its rare but happens after prolonged use of
coumadin “the swelling”. I dropped 35’bs in the hospital.
Those of you on coumadin keep an eye out for this.
Anyways just wanted to share my recent miracle and a warning on coumadin

Most of these movies are about paraplegics that can use their hands; not a
disability in my book………..how about more movies on true quads that can’t do
anything but lay in bed and have other people drive them around in their
wheelchairs (unless you have a ton of money for assistive aids that are a pain
in the ___!) like head drives that hurt your neck muscles………

Jim and Jeffery, well said! I also agree. Ironically the tagline for the
movie was “Live Boldly”—are you kidding me?

Speaking of great Quad Movies, there is an amazing Must Read quad book that is
a true story called: "Lucky Break: A Love Story” The true story of Kirk
Kilgour, an Olympic Level Volleyball player, who became a C4 complete quad, no
movement below his shoulder in his mid-20’s he was hired to coach the Italian
Volleyball team—a huge sport in Italy—and played professionally.

He was such an amazing person that—true story—after I finished a speech for the
National Spinal Cord Injury Association he came
up to me to chat, and at the same time a very attractive woman came up to talk
with me as well. She offered to get us drinks and in
typical male fashion I thought “man if I can ditch the quad I might have a
chance with this woman”. As we got to talking I found his stories so amazing
that by the time she got back with our drinks my thought had changed to, “ditch
the woman, I want to hear more about this guy’s life” we became close friends.

The book is about his life and is written by a woman that fell in love with him
when he was in his early 40’s. She was beautiful, athletic, lived in Aspen and
spent her days skiing, hiking, biking and met him by chance—she wanted to get
good seats to watch
events at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and he needed an attendant—it turns out
a friend of a friend introduced them via phone, she
flew out to LA to do a week-long-trial run to see if it would work. It didn’t,
she said she couldn’t be his attendant because she had fallen in love with
him—the feeling was mutual. The book describes their life, the highs and lows,
world wide travel, Kirk meeting the
Pope and the Pope asking Kirk for his autograph—true story.

I’m hoping somebody grabs hold of the book and turns it into a move, it would
be fantastic!

The book is available at Amazon. Here is a review I wrote about it:
