RE: [QUAD-L] sorry guys

2009-06-16 Thread Derek Dietz

I usually sit back and just learn from all of you quietly but this time I had a
similar story to share. When I was first sent home on a weekend pass from the
hospital during my rehab in 01' my loaner chair, which was some mid-wheel drive
Quickie. I ran off the curb, due to a severely sloped curb cut & unexpected
muscle spasm, in a fairly busy four way intersection. Well needless to say the
whole thing tipped into the road. Me at 6'6" & 250 lbs. in a power chair with
my 5'4" wife, 2 kids in a stroller (1 & 2 yr olds) & a 7 yr old. Approximately
15-20 vehicles just drove on by, honking & some even yelled "Hey, get out of
the road!" While my wife in tears & my 7 yr old were trying to upright my
chair & I. It just makes you sick to think people care so little or are afraid
on some level that civil action will be taken against them if for some reason
you get injured further. It's ridiculous! When I was able bodied I never
hesitated to help someone in need. It's just hard to think that humanity is
just slipping away. Anyway, I thought I would share. Thanks to all of you for
your thoughts, insights & shared wealth of info.

It took me a while to catch up on what was being said. I had no idea what you
are apologizing for.

I feel the same way Eric. I went through something like what Greg did, but it
was in no way nearly as bad as that. I was basically going over a 20 foot wood
bridge and when I was approaching the end I realized I was daydreaming and
hadn't thought to slow down to look and make sure no bicyclists or runners were
on the path before I darted out. I slowed down, but turned a little too hard
to the left and hooked my left tire (I used to have the big mud tires on the
chair back then) on the rail which was meant to keep wheelchairs from falling
off. Unfortunately it spun me to the left (I was using a peach tree and my
head went to the left, therefore my chair went to the left). I ended up
teetering over a ditch with my two rear tires spinning in the air. I sat like
that for 10 minutes while cars continue to drive by without stopping. Finally
the ground crew for our local community drove by and heard me yell. They
pulled me out and got me on my way again.

What does guys did at the golf course goes beyond inconsiderate. I hope karma
comes around.

2008-03-01 Thread Derek Dietz
Hi all. I don't post very often but love all the ideas & support from all
of you. Now more to the point. We made some modifications with our lowered
floor IMS Dodge minivan to help keep it from bottoming out. We installed
Gabriel hijacker air shocks in the rear. It increased our ride level by a few
inches. Then we put over sized light truck tires on it. Again increasing ground
clearance & load handling capability. We also upgraded the disc brakes in front
to help handle the additional weight of the conversion plus my chair & I. I
have an Omega Trac chair, that with me in it, tips the scales at 750 lbs. I'm
6'6" & the drop floor barely accommodates me. But still is better than being in
a van that I can't see out of. My other thought is, if you've got the funding,
take a look at Ryno Truck Conversions here
http://www.rynomobility.com/dealers.htm
. I would like my next conversion to be a Nissan Titan quad cab 4x4 & they do
those, as well as GMC & Chevy vehicle options. Anyway best of luck to you in
your new vehicle purchase.

[QUAD-L] Help us to help Habitat For Humanity

2007-09-05 Thread Derek Dietz
Everyone,

Saturday, January 13th 2001 was a day I'll never forget. That day while
snow skiing on Mt. Hood, I had an unremarkable accident which left me a c5-6
complete quadriplegic. Which means I have no feeling or function below my
chest.
Just after I was released from the ICU, I received a visit from Steve
McCracken our church's pastor. When he was leaving he asked us if there was
anything he could do for us. I (while heavily sedated & still very out of
awareness) asked him to check into HFH (Habitat For Humanity). I feel that God
had spoken through me, as I had no real idea of what HFH was, or did. He
checked into it for us & put us in touch with the right people. We we're
interviewed & approved for their housing program in June of 2001. We we're
scheduled to begin construction on a two level home located in Tigard, Or.
sometime in the Fall of 2002. We we're thrilled with the prospect of becoming
homeowners, but concerned that a two level home would not be feasible with me
being in a powered wheelchair, as I could only access the bottom level of our
home. As it turned out HFH had a homeowner that defaulted on their contract &
had their home reclaimed. It was a single level 4 bedroom, 1 bath, 1,100 sq.
ft. home in Aloha, Or. They asked us (another of God's interventions I
believe) if we would rather remodel this single level home or wait & build the
two level home later. We opted for the remodel & with the help of family &
friends we broke HFH records for sweat equity hours put in, with over 1,100
hours logged. In December 2001, almost 11 months to the day of the accident,
we were presented with the keys to our home & a future of financial security.
As a family that has received one of these affordable houses from HFH, it
is hard to repay them for their willingness to take a chance on you. When I
was approached by my cousin and former working partner Don Davis to partner
with him again, I was thrilled. This time in a fundraising effort, to give
something back to HFH. He has dedicated himself to run & finish the Portland
Marathon, on October 7th 2007. My part is to help raise funds for HFH of
Oregon. Don has always inspired me to be a better man, he's an excellent boss,
worker, family man and friend. To know that I could inspire him to run 26
miles for this cause makes me feel proud.
Here's how you can help, just click on the link below to be taken to a safe
& secure donation page. You can donate as little or as much as you like, they
even make it easy by accepting Visa, MasterCard & American Express as payment
options. Please support this cause and forward this on to all your e-mail
contacts, HFH is an organization that works miracles in families lives. They
did in ours.

Re: [QUAD-L] Can I use this duck gun?

2007-07-11 Thread Derek Dietz
Interesting article. It says further below "Federal regulations eventually
outlawed use of the Punt Gun and baiting. Federal regulations evolved to limit
the number of live decoys a hunter could use, but three years later the
practice of using live decoys were made illegal. From then on, the market
hunter used carved decoys and duck calls." So I'd say that's a no.

Unfortunately being 6'6" & over 250 pds. the chair wont work for me.
You & your gear have to weigh 250 or less or they cant accommodate you. Also
a base price of 29,000 with only a 1yr. warranty, that’s gonna make it hard to

[QUAD-L] What would you do?

BEST explanation of the Iraq warSome of you may
not approve of the Iraqi war, and I hope this email doesn't offend anyone, but
it's the BEST explanation of the war that I've ever read, and I feel I must pass
it on.

This is the BEST explanation of
WHY we are AMERICA, the Home of the Brave and the Land of the FREE!I think
this sums up the situation in terms we can all understand. Thanks for reading.
-The other day, my nine year old
son wanted to know why we were at war. My husband looked at our son and then
looked at me. My husband and I were in the Army during the Gulf War and we would
be honored to serve and defend our country again today. I knew that my husband
would give him a good explanation.
 My husband thought for
a few minutes and then told my son to go stand in our front living room window.
He told him: "Son, stand there and tell me what you
see?"
"I see trees and cars and our
neighbors houses." he replied. OK, now I want you to pretend that our house and
our yard is the United States of America and you are President Bush."Our
son giggled and said "OK.""Now son, I want you to look out the window
and pretend that every house and yard on this block is a different country" my
husband said."OK Dad, I'm pretending.""Now I want you to stand
there and look out the window and see that man come out of his house with his
wife and he has her by the hair and is hitting her. You see her bleeding and
crying. He hits her in the face, he throws her on the ground, then he starts to
kick her to death. Their children run out and are afraid to stop him, they are
crying, they are watching this but do nothing because they are kids and afraid
of their father. You see all of this son ... what do you
do?""Dad?""What do you do son?""I call the police,
Dad.""OK. Pretend that the police are the United Nations and they take
your call, listen to what you know and saw but they refuse to help. What do
you do then son?"Dad, but the police are supposed to help!"My
son starts to whine."They don't want to son, because they say that it is
not their place or your place to get involved and that you should stay out of
it," my husband says."But Dad...he killed her!!" my son
exclaims."I know he did...but the police tell you to stay out of it. Now
I want you to look out that window and pretend you see our neighbor who you're
pretending is Saddam turn around and do the same thing to his
children.""Daddy...he kills them?""Yes son, he does. What do you
do?""Well, if the police don't want to help, I will go and ask my next
door neighbor to help me stop him." our son says."Son, our next door
neighbor sees what is happening and refuses to get involved as well. He refuses
to open the door and help you stop him," my husband says."But Dad, I
NEED help!!! I can't stop him by myself!!""WHAT DO YOU DO SON?" Our son
starts to cry."OK, no one wants to help you, the man across the street
saw you ask for help and saw that no one would help you stop him. He stands
taller and puffs out his chest. Guess what he does next son?""What
Daddy?""He walks across the street to the old lady's house and breaks
down her door and drags her out, steals all her stuff and sets her house on fire
and then...he kills her. He turns around and sees you standing in the window and
laughs at you. WHAT DO YOU DO?""Daddy...""WHAT DO YOU
DO?"Our son is crying and he looks down and he whispers, "I close the
blinds, Daddy." My husband looks at our son with tears in his eyes and asks
him... "Why?""Because Daddy.the police are supposed to help...people
who need itand they won't helpYou always say that neighbors are supposed
to HELP neighbors, but they won't help either...they won't help me stop
him...I'm afraidI can't do it by myself Daddy.I can't look out my window
and just watch him do all these terrible things and...and.do
nothing...soI'm just going to close the blindsso I can't see what he's
doingand I'm going to pretend that it is not happening."I start
to cry.My husband looks at our nine year old son standing in the window,
looking pitiful and ashamed at his answers to my husbands questions and he tells
him"Son"
 "Yes,
Daddy.""Open the blinds because that man he's at your front
door..."WHAT DO YOU DO?"My son looks at his father, anger and
defiance in his eyes. He balls up his tiny fists and looks his father square in
the eyes, without hesitation he says: "I DEFEND MY FAMILY DAD!! I'M NOT GONNA
LET HIM HURT MOMMY OR MY SISTER, DAD!!! I'M GONNA FIGHT HIM, DAD, I'M GONNA
FIGHT HIM!"I see a tear roll down my husband's cheek and he grabs my
son to his chest and hugs him tight, and cries... "It's too late to fight him,
