I use most of those products you described but some were new to me as
well. I’ll put together a list as well.

Thanks,

In a recent post I mentioned some of the products that have been
essential to  successfully living my life as a quad (C5 –6, 38 years
post surfing injury). I wanted to expand upon and share my list with
everybody. I think it would be really interesting to hear everybody
else's list as well.

Products that change my life:

Sure Hands Lift – – I'm still using the lift I bought 20 some years
ago when doing board and pivot transfers became too rough on me and
my attendants.  it has never broken down and only needed a
replacement battery once.  nothing gets me in and out of bed faster--
no Hoyer type sling. It also places me in exactly the right spot in
my wheelchair.  I only wish they had a travel version.

Peristeen Bowel management program--  there is more about this my
last post, but basically it is made my   bowel program faster, more
dependable, easier on my body, and easier on my attendants.

Dragon dictation system-- I use this every single day and if I
didn't have it I wouldn't be able to work, right creatively, keep up
with friends, etc.

Ride wheelchair cushion – –  I lost a year to pressure sores when
every other wheelchair cushion failed me.  I tried EVERYTHING.  The
ride cushion ( which, counterintuitively, is made of hard foam) is
fully customized to each user. It got me back in my wheelchair and
back to  work,  spending time with my kids, and enjoying life.

Alexa for smart home control--  turning on lights, controlling my
bedroom fan, calling attendants hands-free, listening to music,
ordering groceries, etc. etc. etc.    it's amazing being able to do
so many things by voice that once forced me to constantly ask for help.

accessible minivan with EZ lock--  after my wheelchair and I fell
off of an old school van lift, the ability to just quickly roll up
the ramp and into a self locking  tiedown was revolutionary. I take
it too much for granted.

Fully tilting power wheelchair--  my Permobile  300's tilt function
has extended my functional time in my chair and made pressure relief
much less of a hassle. It's also been my most dependable wheelchair
ever. It's going strong at 10 years and has never needed anything
more than batteries and replacement cushioning on my armrests.

Lithotripsy kidney stone removal--  like many quads I have chronic
kidney stones and this tech replaced difficult surgery. now, every 2
to 3 years, I go for a cleaning and I'm up at around in a week.

iPhone/ iPad and Siri--  the touchscreen, and later the voice
assistant, changed everything about communication, making me much
more productive at work. apps made so many life management tasks
incredibly easier-- banking, shopping, reading books, listening to
books, tracking my kids, scheduling help, paying bills,  ordering
meds, taking family pictures...  couldn't we all go on and on here?

Viagra and Ferticare  vibrator--  getting erections and ejaculating
aren't required to have a lot of fun in bed, but they sure are nice.

wheelchair accessible RV by Newmar--  our first accessible RV was a
DIY project that mostly worked, but wasn't all that comfortable.
Newmar's  line of wheelchair accessible RVs were designed from the
ground up for comfort and ease of use.  they are by far the best
product on the market.  the family excursions it enables have given
me some of my favorite memories

thank goodness for these products and technology. I hope they stay
on the market forever.  so, now it's your turn. WHAT IS YOUR LIST
OF CAN'T-LIVE-WITHOUT PRODUCTS?

Who do we get the frames off ?

[QUAD-L] Surgery & Sediment

2012-01-03 Thread Philip Wells
Thanks for that.

Yes next Monday's th day.

I'm thinkin, maybe a week in bed, but will see how things heal.

As for coffee, I drink probably 4 - 5 cups a day and have sediment issues.

I have stopped drinking tea and noticed a reduction in sediment.

Enjoy coffee too much, but if it would eliminate sediment, I'd consider it
for sure.

What say you others ?

[QUAD-L] Upcoming Surgery Apprehension

2011-12-28 Thread Philip Wells
Hi There

Hey I've got butt surgery scheduled for the 2nd week in the new year.

And after not spending a single day on 'bed-rest' for over 20 years I'm a
little nervous of the outcome.

So I'm emailing my friends in the 'disabled community' to see if any of you
have had a similar experience (first or second hand).

I'm having haemroid surgery to remove some long standing pesky little
blighters.

And then I have a mole on my butt as well that's been changing shape &
colour, so Dr Hadawi wants to remove that as well.

He says it will involve a piece of skin the size of a new 50 cent piece.

He reckons I should be up sitting in my chair in a couple of days.

However I'm not sure, as he hasn't had any experience with SCI type
injuries, re healing times, no sensation, pressure sore type issues.

So what say you all !

Sounds a bit freaky to me.

[QUAD-L] Thanks Guys !

2011-11-16 Thread Philip Wells
Hi List Readers

Well I'm home from my 8 day holiday to Southern California, and it was
awesome.

But first I'd like to thank Don P for his recent post from the Reeve
Foundation.

I've been wondering about getting an iPhone or ipad and their website is
full of relevant info about their use by us.

But my trip, we flew Air New Zealand who are great, couldn't have been any
better really nice people eager to help.

As I'm a c4/5 I used an 'eagle-lift' to get in and out of my aircraft seat,
at LAX they told me I was only the 2nd person to use their' s.

Basically it's a sling type electric hoist, I stayed in my power chair to
the aircraft door.

They then put sling under you, hoist you up and wheel you with the eagle to
your seat (first on).

The eagle then sort of straddles your seat (1 leg being your seat, other in
front) then you are lowered to your seat.

The sling removed and that's it, I did sit on my roho for the 12 hour flight
also.

Then :-

Accessible super shuttle from lax to desert palms, Anaheim where we stayed,
taxi and hotel not too dear & ok for accessibility.

First night, bubba Gump scrimp co. restaurant, good value & food, even had
lieutenant Dan wheeling around !

Next day Disneyland, great experience, ya gotta do it, went on a few rides &
the monorail.

Next day had a rental kneeling Dodge van delivered from Mobilityworks, great
van, people and service.

This we drove to universal studios and did the train tour there, was fun.

Next day Getty Centre, WOW, man you have to go there before y'all die, its
freakin fantastic. Land, carpark, tramway, gardens, building, art, the whole
think blew my mind, even hit me on an emotional level. GO THERE !

Next day, shopping at the Citadel, great place, 142 shops, everything there,
cheap as, better than duty free. Got levis and skeechers that fitted my big
frame $40 each. Did rain however but still great.

Last couple of days, at Disney and looking around Anaheim.

Then back to lax and home again.

Thanks to the US of A, and you folks here for your pointers.

You made my trip much, much better than it would have been.

[QUAD-L] Stickin Around

Hey There

I'll be stickin around alright.

As I said I've been a 'lurker' here for 5+ years.

In that time I've learned so much from that are, and have been on this list.

My current problem is trying to find insurance cover for my rental van when
I come to the US.

Anyone here able to suggest any companies.

I'm assuming that you can't just sign up for some from the rental company
when you pick the van up ?

[QUAD-L] Land Line Phones

2011-10-19 Thread Philip Wells
Hi Members

I like many of you don't like the conventional 'hands-free' speaker phones.

They give you no privacy, pick up background noise, and put off callers.

I used a Plantronics phone, see site :-

http://www.plantronics.com/au/

I have a 'goose-neck' type clamp on my phone bench that has a Velcro strap
to hold the hand piece.

To answer the phone I park alongside the phone bench right alongside the
hand piece and use my mouthstick to answer the phone.

This is easy with the Plantronics phone I use as it has a button.

Tauranga is a 6 hour drive from my home.

[QUAD-L] LA Transport Experiences

2011-10-03 Thread Philip Wells
Hi List Members

Ben, Wheelchair (??), and Joan awesome. That's exactly the sort of feedback
I was hoping for.

You guys rock !

Straight away I've got a pretty good handle on getting about in LA.

Didn't know that we could get an accessible van so cheap ($100 day), may
well get one for a couple of days.

But the other options look do-able also.

And thanks for the heads up re the NBA, seems strange to me the players
dictating to the NBA.

But this is what I'm hoping for from my LA experience, to soak up the US way
of life, and meet the locals.

Great suggestions guys !

[QUAD-L] Suggestions For Getting Around In LA

2011-10-02 Thread Philip Wells
Hi List Members

In early November I'm coming to LA, California from New Zealand.

My family & myself will be staying at a hotel in Anaheim.

I'd like to find out what my best option is for getting around.

I'm a C5 Quad with a powerchair and I'm unable to independently transfer.

What is the service like with wheelchair hoist equipped Taxis, can they be
booked the day before & be reliable ?

Is there a bus service that can take wheelchair users ?

What is the Subway rail service like for us wheelers ?

I'm looking at getting to have a look around Hollywood, and maybe going to a
NBA game at the Staples centre.

Hoping we have some members here with LA experience.

[QUAD-L] Hi From New Zealand

2011-10-01 Thread Philip Wells
Hi Fellow List Members

I've been on this list for quite a long period now but don't often post.

My name is Philip Wells, I'm a C5 complete Quad, aged 47.

My injury was in 1979 from a rugby game when I suffered a double dislocation
of C4,5 & 6.

I live in a rural province of New Zealand called Taranaki, on my parents
dairy farm.

I worked for 20 after my accident as an Analyst/Programmer for a small
software development firm in a nearby town.

Nowdays my health is not really up to full time work so im in semi
retirement.

To give you an idea of the bits and pieces that enable me to live as
independantly as I can, here's my 'stuff'.

I've got a Quickie 626 SE powerchair, which I love for all sorts of reasons.

I have a 1996 Chevrolet G20 van with a 4" lowered floor and a Ricon rear
mounted hoist.

I sit on a Roho quattro cushion, which I find really good, not having spent
a day on bed rest for many years.

My interests are art, sport, music, the politic's of disability, motor &
horse racing.

Life has taken an exciting twist recently as my parents are shouting my
whole family (8 adults, 6 kids) to Disneyland in California for a week.

Can't wait, and im hopefuil of picking up a few hints from you all to make
my trip a little easier.

But without getting too carried away, hi to you all.

[QUAD-L] Save A Bee - Throw Your Cell Away !

2007-04-18 Thread Philip Wells
Hi Y'all

Here is some more freaky shit.

Read the story, then check the link below just so you know it's not
urban myth.

Might be a good time to invest in Bee Pollen Companies/Products, Comvita
is a New Zealand one.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colony_Collapse_Disorder

Are Mobile Phones Wiping Out Our Bees?

By Geoffrey Lean and Harriet Shawcross

 The Independent UK

Scientists claim radiation from handsets is to blame for mysterious
"colony collapse" of bees.

It seems like the plot of a particularly far-fetched horror film.
But some scientists suggest that our love of the mobile phone could
cause massive food shortages, as the world's harvests fail.

They are putting forward the theory that radiation given off by
mobile phones and other hi-tech gadgets is a possible answer to one of
the more bizarre mysteries ever to happen in the natural world - the
abrupt disappearance of the bees that pollinate crops. Late last week,
some bee-keepers claimed that the phenomenon - which started in the US,
then spread to continental Europe - was beginning to hit Britain as
well.

The theory is that radiation from mobile phones interferes with
bees' navigation systems, preventing the famously home loving species
from finding their way back to their hives. Improbable as it may seem,
there is now evidence to back this up.

Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) occurs when a hive's inhabitants
suddenly disappear, leaving only queens, eggs and a few immature
workers, like so many apian Mary Celestes. The vanished bees are never
found, but thought to die singly far from home. The parasites, wildlife
and other bees that normally raid the honey and pollen left behind when
a colony dies, refuse to go anywhere near the abandoned hives.

The alarm was first sounded last autumn, but has now hit half of all
American states. The West Coast is thought to have lost 60 per cent of
its commercial bee population, with 70 per cent missing on the East
Coast.

CCD has since spread to Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Italy
and Greece. And last week John Chapple, one of London's biggest
bee-keepers, announced that 23 of his 40 hives have been abruptly
abandoned.

Other apiarists have recorded losses in Scotland, Wales and
north-west England, but the Department of the Environment, Food and
Rural Affairs insisted: "There is absolutely no evidence of CCD in the
UK."

The implications of the spread are alarming. Most of the world's
crops depend on pollination by bees. Albert Einstein once said that if
the bees disappeared, "man would have only four years of life left".

No one knows why it is happening. Theories involving mites,
pesticides, global warming and GM crops have been proposed, but all have
drawbacks.

German research has long shown that bees' behavior changes near
power lines.

Now a limited study at Landau University has found that bees refuse
to return to their hives when mobile phones are placed nearby. Dr Jochen
Kuhn, who carried it out, said this could provide a "hint" to a possible
cause.

Dr George Carlo, who headed a massive study by the US government and
mobile phone industry of hazards from mobiles in the Nineties, said: "I
am convinced the possibility is real."

The Case Against Handsets

Evidence of dangers to people from mobile phones is increasing. But
proof is still lacking, largely because many of the biggest perils, such
as cancer, take decades to show up.

Most research on cancer has so far proved inconclusive. But an
official Finnish study found that people who used the phones for more
than 10 years were 40 per cent more likely to get a brain tumour on the
same side as they held the handset.

Equally alarming, blue-chip Swedish research revealed that radiation
from mobile phones killed off brain cells, suggesting that today's
teenagers could go senile in the prime of their lives.

Studies in India and the US have raised the possibility that men who
use mobile phones heavily have reduced sperm counts. And, more
prosaically, doctors have identified the condition of "text thumb", a
form of RSI from constant texting.

Professor Sir William Stewart, who has headed two official
inquiries, warned that children under eight should not use mobiles and
made a series of safety recommendations, largely ignored by ministers.
