Re: [QUAD-L] Windows 8 - do you have it?

Windows 8 is just Windows 7 with a screen over it that enables touch. The OS
initial window will allow the user to place objects (icons) on the initial
screen that will let the user use gestures and touch to open programs. Open the
Desktop icon and you're in a Win 7 operating mode.

That said, I purchased an HP 27"All-in-One Desktop with touchscreen technology.
My observations:

Open the box. Wow, this this is beautiful ! Fantastic screen which actually can
lay flat and used like a PC "tabletop". The monitor can be brought forward
closer then anything previous to allow the user to type on on screen keyboard.
Only one thing noticed, it is too large. There is no way to comfortably reach
to the edges of the screen.

As a C5/6, I rely on voice technology to operate Windows. I found both Windows
8 and Naturally Speaking Premium voice products are not ready for prime time,
i.e. Navigating the Windows 8 screens and programs.

Touch screen technology in Windows 8 is tough, especially on a 27" screen.
Using a stylus to imitate one finger movement works for basic stuff. Multi
fingered gestures just did not work, for me. The afformentioned edges are used
in navigation, options etc. and for a one fingered person with limited hand
control, dragging across the whole screen to open a last used program is
impossible. They have a 23" monitor, which I would recommend.

I just could not make it work, given the above obstacles, so, sadly, I sent it
back.

I keep reminding myself that, for me at least, new technology must mature to
allow the secondary software markets time to catch up.

So, I put an SSD Drive in my HP Desktop for $160 (256 GB) and the machine is
screamingly fast.

[QUAD-L] Windows 8 - do you have it?

2014-03-23 Thread KK Batte
Son "bought" (with my income tax money) a laptop with a stand to attach to my
wheelchair. He is setting it up for me but it has Windows 8. People have been
complaining about it being hard. I'll be using either a mouse or the stylus I
made out of a piece a plastic plumbing T. The stand is to get me out of the
bed as much as possible. After being in the bed most of the last 3 months,
I'll accept that he is trying to do a good thing. It will have text to speech
already installed & Tobii speech program so I can freely "talk" to anyone who
will listen to my sexy British computer voice. LOL!!!
Only problem he has run in to is that Blue Tooth isn't working so he had to
send it back. So hopefully next week sometime I'll be able to email & chat to
my hearts content from my newly rebuilt wheelchair. "They", the powers that
be, have decided to make me wait another year to get a new wheelchair.
Happy Wheeling!KK
