Thanks for that information. I didn't think it was optional to do major surgery without general anesthetic. That's why am afraid to get the colostomy performed. When I had my surgery for my urostomy, I developed pneumonia and had a really rough time in the hospital. thanks Nan the surgeon said he felt the spinal was the way to go and I was not sedated when I had my bladder stones removed but I think I will prefer sedation for this J Nicki From: Nan [mailto:nlg52...@yahoo.com] Sent: Sunday, November 02, 2014 10:32 AM To: zoocr...@windstream.net Cc: quad-list@eskimo.com Subject: Re: [QUAD-L] hemorrhoidectomy Nicki, I have not had that procedure, but I have had plenty of surgeries through the years. Re: [QUAD-L] hemorrhoidectomy
Nicki, I have not had that procedure, but I have had plenty of surgeries through the years. The last time I had general anesthesia was in 1977. I ended up with pneumonia and almost died. Since then, I have opted for a spinal or epidural. Sedation can be added if you are nervous or apprehensive. I have had 2 children, a revision to my Koch Pouch (10 hour surgery), 3 flaps, and a complete hysterectomy along with many minor procedures without general anesthesia. Sometimes the doctors will tell you a general is necessary ... ask to talk to the anesthesiologist! All of the anesthesiologists I've dealt with were more than happy to avoid using general anesthesia on a quad. As you can tell, I am 100% in favor of the spinal option. I hope this helps. Re: [QUAD-L] hemorrhoidectomy
Back in my early days (about 8-years post injury--I'm a T10 complete para) I had several hemorrhoid "bandings"--the proctologist uses a special tool to put specially made, super-tight, rubber bands around the hemorrhoids, within a week they shrivel up and vanish. I never had any problems. HOWEVER, I had another friend that had a similar procedure and ended up with a blood clot that went to his heart--he recovered, but was fortunate he knew what his symptoms meant. A couple things I've learned--make sure your doctor knows about dealing with SCI and how we evacuate our bowels. I have spoken with a few proctologists that won't even consider dealing with SCI and hemorrhoids. Per blood thinners--the main thing is to be monitored. I am on blood thinners, and I have had to go off of them from time to time--for 3-5 days--due to various minor surgical procedures. No problem, but again, it is vital to communicate all of this to the various medical professionals. Hope this helps. [QUAD-L] hemorrhoidectomy
Has anyone had a hemorrhoidectomy and will you share your experience as far as general anesthesia versus spinal block and sedation, recovery time, etc. I am scheduled for surgery Dec. 8 and while it is an outpatient procedure we're doing it at the hospital just in case something goes wrong. I'm on blood thinner and nervous about going off of it even though he said we'd do lovinox shots the 3 days before surgery and after. Ready for relief! Nicki
