I have used a military's type of poncho from the very beginning, the main thing 
you want to do is to keep it from blowing up like over your head. I use a 
couple metal spring clamps to hold it down in front of me and then tuck the 
sides under my elbows. Many online retailers and a few local military surplus 
stores should have them for about $20.
