it on my footrest. The old skin is cut out as best we can. I know most normal

Flap procedure is usually done only after the open wound has healed to 90
percent, and not before. After the procedure, the body must be not be
moved for a long period of time. Are you a candidate for a wound vac, first?

Is your air mattress tubes, or small bubbles you can close off on that area?

I can't sleep on my back, though wish I could, but my cath doesn't drain
then.

You might put a small pillow just under 1 hip, yet stay flat. It can lift a
little pressure off.

Might try not ppping your feet up, might be adding extra pressure.

I don't know if you are able to get one, but you need a "True low air loss
mattress ", not an alternating pressure mattress that leaks air. Good luck.

Only thing you can do is be turned gently every 2 hours; you won't be totally
on your side, but pillows underneath one side will take the pressure right off
your buttocks..

Please email your Representives using he website information listed below.
Call Their office in 1-2 days to prevent 20-40 cuts wheelchair and and W/C
accessories for complex disabilities.

September 16, 2015

CRT Stakeholders and Friends,

The biggest threat to preserving access to CRT today is summed up in this
question: Can we stop the devastating Medicare cuts to CRT wheelchair
accessories scheduled for January 1, 2016?

The answer to that is, "it depends". It depends on the short-term actions of
you and thousands of other CRT stakeholders across the country. If we get
everyone engaged as described below the answer is yes. If we don't, the answer
is no.

As reported, without specific Congressional intervention Medicare payments for
accessories used with individually configured Complex Rehab wheelchairs will be
INAPPROPRIATELY cut by 20% to over 40% starting January 1. This is a result of
CMS violating the intent of existing Congressional legislation and
inappropriately using Medicare Competitive Bid Program pricing for "standard"
wheelchair accessories to cut payments for "complex rehab" wheelchair
accessories.

If Congressional legislation is not passed to prevent this, there will be
devastating consequences to people with disabilities who rely on Complex Rehab
wheelchairs to meet their medical needs and maximize their function and
independence. It will not only negatively impact Medicare beneficiaries, but
will extend to children and adults with disabilities covered under Medicaid and
other health insurance programs as well.

The positive news is that legislation to stop these cuts has been introduced in
the House of Representatives by Representative Lee Zeldin (R-NY). The
legislation is bill number H.R. 3229. Our collective task is to get as many
co-sponsors on this bill as we can over the next several weeks and get Congress
to pass it as soon as possible.

Here is where your immediate help and that of others is needed. The weeks
ahead will be a very busy time for Congress. We need all CRT stakeholders and
friends to contact their Representative today and be persistent in their
outreach by following these simple steps:

1.) Visit the web page dedicated to this issue to access helpful background
documents you can use in your outreach as needed. You can also view the list of
current co-sponsors to verify your Representative has NOT signed on yet (this
list will be updated daily as we get new co-sponsors).
2.) Send an Email: If your Representative has not signed on, use the link
provided to send an email. Just supply your home address and your
Representative will be identified. A template message is provided to use as is
or you can modify.
3.) Make a Call: Wait 24 to 48 hours after sending your email and then call
your Representative's office using the guidelines provided on the web page.

Special Note: A copy of the April 20th House of Representatives' letter to CMS
is available on the above web page. Check to see if your Representative was one
of the 101 signers. These members should be particularly willing to co-sponsor
H.R. 3229 since it was necessitated due to CMS' refusal to honor the
Congressional request in the letter. Mention this in your outreach.

After starting your advocacy by sending the email, your follow up to get a
"yes" answer is critical. Additional emails and phone calls may be required.
Remember Congress is a busy place. But we have seen proof that positive results
DO come from polite persistence with your Congressional offices.

Please share this Alert with other CRT stakeholder groups and individuals.
We'll keep you updated on the progress and please let us know if you require
any assistance.

Thanks for making this a priority and doing all we can to stop these cuts and
prevent major access issues for the people with disabilities who depend on CRT.
Regards,

Don

Good morning,

I’ve seen almost everyone on the quad site talk about pressure sores they’re
dealing with. Well, it’s my turn.

I have an area that I’ve been dealing with for several months now. It is
superficial, but nevertheless is there. There is no depth, but this skin keeps
opening. There is nothing underlying that can be detected, but being in a skin
fold is the problem.

I would like to hear from anyone about what kind of wheelchair cushion you may
use, Roho users please don’t respond as I have used the roho and it does not
work for me.

Question two, does anybody use memory foam or T foam? If you do use either,
does anybody ever cut a hole in the foam to relieve pressure?

Question three, if anyone has ever had seat mapping, do you have any type of a
wedge placed under your cushion to shift weight differently?

Am a 49 year post Sci C5-6.

Thanks,

Glenn

Good luck and take care of that wound. I had one in the pubic area which was
a stage four and you could see the bone, but with proper care we got it
resolved without an operation and although it has never healed completely my
doctors agree that it might not (spent 10 months on a Clinitron) and now I
go in to see a wound clinic once a month just to keep measurements and the
proper medications. We tried a wound Vac but the area is impossible to keep
sealed. But I have witnessed some great results with the wound Vac. My
prayers go out for you. Joan

I'm so sorry to hear about your sore. Have you gone to the would care

What do you think caused it? That is always the question what is causing
the red marks that turning to sores. I often have a hard time knowing if was
my shoe, my splints on my chair. If only there was a magic solution. Our
lives would be so much easier. I will pray that the antibiotic will keep it
from going to the bone. That almost happened to me over the summer. I have
you use a wound vacuum for two months after being hospitalized one month.

I had a similar wound. At one point, it was about the size of a baseball. It
took about a year to close up. Have you tried a wound vac or e-stim (electronic
muscular stimulation to encourage blood flow)?

Initially, I had been spending four hours on my back, and four hours turned one
way, and four hours turned the other way. I changed my turning schedule so that
I would spend two hours on one side and two hours on the other side, and I
think this helped. Also, I tried to consume as much protein as possible.

Good luck,

Larry, you should be in contact with your Wound Care Specialist and
over-seeing MD. Pressure sores are mostly serious, especially with that size.
You should be working with a team of highly trained nurses with certification
in wound care that can change you covers and wrappings daily until the
wound finally closes and heals. Dead tissue should be removed, again by a
trained specialist and the wound stuffed.

Hi Gang,

Well I'm sure everyone has spoke on this topic before, but I forgot. lol
Anywho my question is what have people used that has been the quickest way
to make a pressure point heal? I know being off it helps. Buttt I
work a 40 hour work week so staying off my butt is to hard. I don't know how
I got it because I'm always on the go. I think it was the fact I was in
hospital three days & I had to bug nurses to just come turn me. I also have
a pressure point on my lower left heel of foot. I haven't had any pressure
point in years. So does anyone know which dressing for pressure points are
better. Should I go see a doc? Sorry if I sound so naive to situation, but I
really don't get these.

Originally for cow farmers under the name of UDDER BALM, which was used on
milking cows udders to prevent them from chapping from the electric milking
equipment. Farmers wives used it on their hands and faces and skin rashes.
It
was sterile back then until Bag Balm was marketed to the consumer.

Amen Glenn. Who could forget Bag Balm. Another great product to prevent, but
not recommended for open wounds. A small green can goes along way. Available

I had a wound in 2001 that nearly killed me. It started as a small dry crack
near the ischium in late 2000; it stayed superficial until it got infected and
started tunneling. The wound tunneled to about six inches deep and gave me
osteomyelitis. In October 2001- I had my ischium shaved in order to remove
infected bone, and then a full muscle flap. Luckily I have been wound free
every since. I still get reddish/pink in the same area; however, every 7-8
hours I am up we check my skin and slather it with bag balm. If memory serves
me correctly, you should take in about 70 grams of protein a day to help heal a
wound.

I too am very thin- any ideas for putting on a few healthy pounds?

Good luck and best wishes!

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions! I started taking a multivitamin and
am trying to increase my protein and calories. I've lost a lot of weight since
my accident which hasn't helped my skin integrity. I know if I can get it to
granulate new tissue by keeping it covered I will be better off in the long
run. If I let it scab over when it heals I'll have an indentation and nothing
between bone and skin. I like the idea of using the new skin to toughen it up
after its healed. This site is great, you've given me so many more ideas than
my doctor has had. I will let you know how it goes and what works.

I hope you have good results.
It's unbelievable how many sores, my friend has had to fight in the last few

to heal over. The wound Center tells me not to have a scab, and they always
take off every scab I have. The wound Center says it won't heal with a scab.
They used
Fibracol at the wound care Center for my last wound: : it was recommended
by their wound Center also, you can get at a pharmacy were you can order
online. I also took a protein drink from the drink, and I take a lot of

RE: [QUAD-L] Pressure sore

2008-02-08 Thread Greg
When I got a sore just like that, it started to go away, then broke open
again twice. Both times it broke open while in the ER a month apart. The
outer redness and sore is about the size of a dime, but the deep sore is
about the size of a pencil eraser.

While in the hospital, they set-up a Wound Care place to send out a wound
nurse to my house every morning. Then she came out every 3rd day for awhile.

Anyway, they used lots of medicines on me. SilvaSorb Gel, Maxorb Extra (CMA
/ Alginate Dressing), Skintegrity Hydrogel.

The Maxorb looks like Angel Hair, you kind of roll it up and lightly set in
the wound. Not a hard pack.

The other stuff is a gel goo you put on the sore and cover with a light
dressing.

It's used so your sore never dries out. That's not good. It should not dry
out until the end. Or it can leave a big indent in the skin. And a thick
scab can take longer to heal well. If your outer dressing looks wet, change
it, that can cause infections. Once mine was healing well, I left it open at
night and dress it when I get up.

It is healed up now, but still very red. From sitting on it during the day,
plus it is all new skin and meat there. It takes a long time to go away.

Greg

I have a pressure sore on my tailbone. It's been there for four months and
is about the size of a pencil eraser. I put this ointment on it that was
given to me by my doctor every morning, then a bandage. I made a donut out
of sheepskin that is taped on over that. I try to stay off of it as much as
I can. I get in my chair to eat then lay down on the couch and then back in
my chair for lunch, errands or a meeting and then I try to lay down again in
the afternoon. I take the bandage off at night and let it be open to air.
It looks like it's going to heal and then it just breaks open again. Does
anybody have any suggestions? I'm really sick of it.

I have one in the same place about 4x4 in. I've had it for four YEARS. I've
tried everything short of visiting the Pope and nothing works. I have done all
the following: bed rest, wet-to-dry, wound vac, roho cushion, tilt chair,
various ointments and treatments from the wound care center, massive protein
and vitamin supplements, prayer and eloquent curses. And still -- there it is.
It is a bit like a rabid wolf hiding behind a tree that will most certainly one

you can stomach. Try Pro-stat, it is very good.

Stacy,
Pants will often pull tight in the crotch area causing a pressure sore. If
this is the case, you may be able to get up in your chair and be certain the
pants are loose there. I'm guessing women don't notice it as easily as
men. I get Aloe gel caps and cut them open to apply the concentrated aloe
on red and even open areas. I have had great success doing this. I wish you the
best.

It's definitely skin against cushion.  Strange where it is
thought.  It's hard to even try to describe where it is.  It's more
towards the pelvic area but not a highly boney area.  I don't get it.
I'm going to try to find a way to get a roho paid for.  Any ideas?

Is the sore in a area where skin touches skin?  or is it where skin

They gave me a deep contour 3 plus years ago when I came home. I hated it
because I had issues getting the board under my butt. They gave me a J2 instead
and never became an issue until just now.  I dug up the deep contour to use
the other day. I notice that it does give added cushion.  I'm hoping that
it will help.  I can always get right off of it when I get home.  If
it comes to an issue that I need to write a paper, I can always write it out by
hand first then type it up quickly.

Hi Larry,

I just recovered from a sore on my heel. It was a pain to get it to
heal. I used a wound-vac for a while, it helped a lot but it also gave
a yeast rash on my foot, warm and wet. After the sore filled in a
little I got a skin graph and that worked great. The heel is total
healed, it only took about nine months in all to heal that sore.

One of the reasons I'll never use a ROHO (flats).
I've never heard of anyone healing by staying up that long.
If possible have someone tie off the one rubber tube section that would
contact the spot, leaving it softer than the rest of the cushion.
Not knowing your support system (aids, family etc) it's hard to give
advice.
If it is not deep sometimes a sterile wet to dry will help heal it.
I know people who swear by fresh Aloe instead of saline, but you need a
plant and know your reactions.
And no 15 hr sits!
Try to get into bed for breaks.
A little sacrifice now may prevent a 12 week bed stay recuperating from
a flap!

Sharon,

It's been my
experience about the only way to heal a sore on one's tush is to stay completely
off of it until it's entirely healed. It sucks though. The first time I ever got
pressure sores I got 5 at once - 1 on both ischials, 1 on my coccyx and 1 on
both heels. I spent 3 months on complete bedrest.

Best of luck,

Diligence in keeping the pressure off and moisture away. My last one was
in June of 2004 and didn't heal till late december! For the first 3 months
I was getting up only 3 hrs a day. 21 hrs in bed
To sum up ... it wasn't caused by pressure but by constant moisture. But
once it opened it was a bitch to get rid of. We tried EVERYTHING. The
wound vac helped greatly but didn't respond as quickly as we thought it
would.
All sores are different. We tried 12 different treatments (packing,
dressings, wound vac and anything we thought might work.
I've been on this list ten yrs and this whole past 12 months has been bad
for many members to get sores. Hm.
In my 25 yrs as a quad I've had sores on both my heels, on my forefinger
(had to amputate half of it), one on the bone of my butt (my first) and the
last two laid me up 12 months total in the last 4 yrs.
One BEGAN as yeast but became a sore in the crease under my RIGHT buttock.
(2001). This last one was moisture induced and became a full blown sore in
the crease under my LEFT buttock.
Lori (now keeping my skin dry down there)

Subject: [QUAD-L] Pressure sore solutions?
Hi Everyone!
I can't figure out how to go through the archives, so hope you don't mind
me
asking about the age-old pressure sore question...Is there a good way to
get
rid of one? 3 weeks ago I sat on my Roho without air and needless to say,
my butt didn't like it. Now I have an open sore, not under an ischule
(sp?)
but off to the side. 3 years ago I had a pressure sore and literally
laid
in bed for 4-6 hours every afternoon for a year and finally opted for flap
surgery. Has anyone had any success getting rid of one? And if so, can
you
tell me what you did? I'm usually in my chair 15 hours/day.

Thanks,
Sharon
P.S. Spring is on its way! Hurray! I'll give you a yell, Stacy, when we
head to O.C.!

Title: Re: [QUAD-L] Pressure sore solutions?

I always ended up doing a flap when I  had 1 back there never any success. The 1s on my heels regranex in the morning silver deen cream in the evening it still took almost a yr 2 heal 1 and I needed a skin graft on my other heel matter of fact a second skin graft because 1st didn’t take. So as I think about it no help from me.
