QuickDraw GX

2001-07-15 Thread David Deckert

>"The installed substitution fonts are
>designed for use with QuickDraw GX.
>Please remove them and install the standard
>QuickDraw versions."

If I recall QuickDraw GX only runs on a
PowerMac, and if so maybe QuickDraw GX
components (the incompatible fonts) were
installed either during the printer software
install or when you put the OS itself on. Does
that sound about right?

Don't know about 7.6.1, but I think 8.1 keeps
wanting to install GX on a Quad even with an
Easy Install.

Re: Mac disk burner software

2001-07-15 Thread David Deckert

>I am looking for a copy of Easy CD Creator

How you plan to hook up this USB (or internal
IDE?) CD burner to your Quadra?

>I got the drive from a friend but he only had
>the Windows software.

Right. And if you had a copy of Easy CD
Creator you'd still have Windows-only
software. The Mac version of Roxio's (néé
Adaptec software's) software for burners is
called Toast.

>I tried contacting Iomega but have not gotten
>anywhere. Does anyone have a
>copy or know where I could get a copy?

Yeah, it isn't their software to give. And Roxio
will only let you download updates, not the real
deal for free. Presuming you have USB, buy
Roxio's Toast Titanium.

I use it for my own Zip 650 and it's great. Toast
4 is fine too and works on some older Macs.
Both versions work well with the Zip CD650,
which your Quadra won't support. Uh, so, I'm
still wondering...

AOL Instant Messanger Woes

2001-07-15 Thread Nathan Town

Hey Quaddies,
Back again, I'm still having memory problems with AIM, I did ask on
another list, using the once removed rule, and got an suggestion to
remove the stock ticker, well that helped only a little, now it takes
longer to give me a type one error. I've turned off everything I can find
to turn off that may cause memory problems, and I can't get anywhere.
Anymore help would be appreciated.
God Bless,
Nathan

Hack HD SC Setup to recognise the HD. There are directions in the FAQ for

Re: LC III HD recognition

Thanks pickle. Yes, I have the original "Disk Tools" floppy for 7.6.
HD SC Setup is also installed on the aforementioned Zip disk (boot &

to him that neither the LC III nor the HD SC Setup would recognise the
new HD, and didn't hear from him again.
The IIsi (27Mhz) is currently running 7.6 with all networking and

problem to install HD SC Setup if there is a way to make it work.

Re: Strange Boot Behavior of Q840

2001-07-15 Thread DWatkinsss

In a message dated 7/6/01 11:26:07 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

<< Date: Thu, 05 Jul 2001 16:05:57 -0600

Subject: Strange Boot Behavior of Q840

From: William Hatchell <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Today, before I could check the PRAM battery in the Quadra 840AV which has
been showing some strange boot behavior (posted earlier to the list), it
displayed the "sad Mac" startup screen with a terrible calamity-style sound
which I've never before heard on a Mac. The monitor wasn't as yet activated
so I only heard the sound but I'm sure it's the "sad Mac" thing. Can anyone
tell me for sure if this is just one more indication of a dead PRAM battery?

The discussion responses had narrowed the culprits down to either a dead PRAM
battery or a failing power supply. Will change out the battery at any rate,
and who knows...my problems may then vanish. Geesh, the Q840 case is a pain
to remove and then to get to the mobo is another chore! ;-)

Thanks!

Bill

 >>

Most likely NOT the battery. My only symptoms on a 840 were the bad date and
other settings not being remembered after shutdown. Mine went bad about a
year before I got brave enough to open that terrible case you mentioned. I
wanted to wait until I got a memory stick and a 2nd harddrive before I
replaced the battery. Then, of course, I put the wrong (dead) battery back
in. Had to open the case all over again. Wish it were just the battery. / dave

List Netiquette

2001-07-15 Thread Dan Knight

I updated the Netiquette page this morning to address some recent issues
involving signatures, name calling, vulgarity, perceived threats, and
when it's appropriate to mention an auction on the list. Some of these
are good general netiquette guidelines; others are specific to the Low
End Mac family of email lists.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with this information.

Thanks!

updated 2001:07:15

There are informal rules of the Internet which are termed netiquette to
help people use proper etiquette within this form of communication. Some
examples of poor netiquette are not signing messages, unsubscribing to
the posting address instead of the administrative address, or TYPING IN
ALL CAPS (which is considered yelling). This is a dynamic environment and
netiquette is changing rapidly.

I can't say it much better than this: "...my goal here is to educate
people who participate in mailing lists, since only by improving our list
manners will mailing lists continue to become increasingly pleasant and
useful." (Adam C. Engst, TidBITS #480.)

Some informal rules for the Low End Mac family of mail lists:

Remember that replies automatically go to the list, not the just the
person who posted the message. You need to change the to: address to
respond to an individual. (Some other lists, such as Mac-Mgrs and our
Swap list, work just the opposite way. On those lists, a reply goes to
the original sender by default, not to the list.)

Never send attachments to the list. An attachment may contain a virus,
may be in a format others cannot use, may not make it through some mail
gateways, makes the message bigger, and will bog down both the list
server and the mail server.

- Many of today's email programs send styled text attachments by default.
You must turn HTML and other styled text off to post to the list (see
#3).

- Large enough attachments or messages will be rejected. (I've set a
ceiling
  of 10 KB per posting.)

- Instead of sending an attachment to the list, offer to email it
directly
  to those who request it.

Don't send styled text or HTML files; only send plain text. Style text
may or may not come through as an attachment, but it is very difficult to
read in a plain text email client. Styled text is especially troublesome
in digests. The list server is set to reject anything except plain text.
(I routinely throw out any email I receive that comes in only as an
attachment -- if you can't take the time to send it as plain text, I
won't take the time to read it.)

Style your posting -- ASCII style.

- Put a blank line between paragraphs.

- Put a blank line between what you are quoting and what you are writing.

- Clearly mark quoted sections. Most email programs do this by putting
">"
or "> " in front of each line of quoted material.

Don't use PGP encryption on your messages. A lot of people (probably
most) can't even use it.

Please quote only the relevant portion of messages you respond to -- and
please quote some of the original message so others know what you're
responding to.

"You shouldn't have to wade through gobs of extraneous stuff to get to
the meat of the message. You should include just enough to provide a
context for the message and no more. (Peter Kimble, my high school CS
teacher, now gives his students the rule of thumb that at least half of
the lines in an email message should be their own.) If you must include
the whole message that you are replying to, include it after your
response." (From "A Beginner's Guide to Effective Email", Kaitlin Duck
Sherwood <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
.)

"Quoting sparingly does require manual work, since most email programs
automatically quote the original message in replies. But failing to edit
the original wastes everyone's time and bandwidth." (Adam C. Engst,
TidBITS #480.)

Please keep "me too" messages off the list; these are best sent
privately, if at all.

Let sleeping threads lie. If it's been over a week since the last posting
in a thread, consider it dead and buried.

When asking a question, please list relevant information regarding
hardware, software, and version of the Mac OS involved.

Change the subject line when the subject of the thread changes.

When responding to a digest post, be sure to change the subject to match
that of the original message. The list server is set to reject replies to
the digest otherwise.

You can wander into other Mac-related topics, but try to limit discussion
to Mac-related topics (politics, religion, and a lot of other things are
off topic as far as Mac lists are concerned). Always treat others
courteously.

Signature lines

- Please keep your signature concise. Six lines or less is best.

- Many email clients wrap text at 80 characters, so check that your
signature won't wrap badly because of this.

- Taglines should be clearly separated from the body of the email and
should
  come a

access.

Bingo. HFS Plus for sure.

Probably not. Don't use Norton, though; use HD SC Setup. If you need a
copy, it's in the FAQ. Hopefully you already have it.

What OS does it have on it? Does it have HD SC Setup on the HD anywhere?
Or any other disk formatter?

You probably have a problem with the analogue board; unless you are
experienced in fixing that sort of thing, it's probably more trouble than
it's worth. Take the motherboard out and put it in a Colo(u)r Classic :)

Need QuickDraw standard fonts

2001-07-15 Thread Ken Bakalar

I installed 7.6.1 on my Quadra 610. It works great, but I have a problem on
boot.I get this warning message every time:
"The installed substitution fonts are designed for use with QuickDraw GX.
Please remove them and install the standard QuickDraw versions." Everything
seems to work okay in spite of this message.

Any advice out there? I have an original 7.6.1 CD. Are the required fonts on
there somewhere?

(I am using the Epson drivers for a Stylus Color 900G, which works fine. I
also loaded EpsonShare. The Quadra is acting as the print server on an
Airport-based network.)

LC III HD recognition

2001-07-15 Thread Hardy Menagh

I installed a new (used) 540mb HD in my LC III. This was purchased
online from a company who specifically mentioned LC IIIs and other older
Macs as being able to use their reformatted drives. The unit is a
Seagate (Conner) 5400rpm and made for IBM. I Installed it and the system
wouldn't recognise it. I booted from a Zip drive with OS 7.6 and a few
utilities. The SCSI Probe listed it correctly but when I clicked Mount,
the message said "The large volume connected to your computer cannot be
used because a 68040 or PowerPC CPU is required for volume sizes larger
than 4 gigabytes." This HD was supposed to come Mac formatted with
Anubis Drive Utility software and 100mb of shareware.
Ok, so I ran Norton Disk Editor, started weeding through the code and
found some OS 8.1 elements on the disk, also some text Telling me that
in order to load 7.5 - 7.6.x, I would need either another drive with
8.1, or another computer with 8.1. I don't have these available to me. I
could use Norton to wipe the disk but I'm guessing that it still won't
be recognised by the system. Am I correct about this?
My main question is, is there any relatively cheap way to get this
disk to work with my LC III? Bear in mind that I am currently only on
line with a WebTV (insert a stream of blue language) and can't download
anything. The only option I can see right now is to eat the postage both
ways and pay a 15% restock fee. This company has been no help in the
Tech Support area. I have a working IIsi with a 240mb HD if that can be
useful in any way.
Sorry about the length, but I like to provide as much information as
I can. Thanks, Hardy

Bezel?

2001-07-15 Thread Eric Schwarz

Does someone have (or know a cheap source) a tray-load CD bezel for a Quadra
800 (this would also be for 840AV/PM8100/8500)? I have an almost finished
Quadra that has been upgraded and I really want to get a bezel for it.

Thanks,
Eric
