Pull off that little black cover and throw it away. That thing is the
biggest nuisance ever and it doesn't help anything.

BTW, I highly doubt your problem has anything to do with a dead battery.

That's a lot more likely to have caused the problem, and money tends to
short things out, which tends to cause permanent (read: not fixable) damage.

That's for the 8/24XLi boards.

The one for the PaintBoard Lightning is the newer one - it's specific to
the card. The earlier ones all had a universal driver called "Rasterops
Accelerator."

FWIW, this is the driver you need to be looking for:
RasterOps "PaintBoard Li" (RasterOps 1.0 24XLi Video Driver v.9327)

May be this one?

Same precise bracket as the rear brackets.

You must:

1) remove all three screws which retain the bracket base in the far forward
position,

2) slide the bracket base to the far rear position, and

3) remove the bottom front bracket, thereby removing the SyQuest AND the
floppy.

Reassemble in reverse.

Oh, sometimes it helps in the reassembly process to release the retaining
latches on the bezels.

Mostly, the Q950's case is all about the subtleties in precision assembly of
very tight tolerance components.

Good call; those damn 840s are picky about stuff, as our Mark Benson has
found out :)

Got another Mac you can try it in? Sometimes the 840s don't like extra
video cards unless you have the onboard video in use as well, or other
oddities...

Yeah. Paintboard. I ran one in a NewerTech G3 enhanced
7100 running OS 8.6. Baby rocked. I'm trying to recall
if the card had to be installed before the software.
That would settle the question of a default resolution
on the card. I don't have the software handy so I
hesitate to rely on my memory. (So many Macs, so many
cards.) Have you tried a different nubus slot on the
840AV? I'll get to the software sometime tomorrow
(it's getting late here) and let you know.

Very much so. If it's a DDS-1 drive as some one else said it holds,
IIRC, 1.3Gb. The tapes are pretty inexpensive.

I have a DDS-3 (probably the best $2.50 I spent) drive on my file
server and the backups work quite well. I previously had a QIC drive
capable of backing up 1Gb. The tapes were expensive and it was slow.
The DDS was such a big improvement. Mine's a 12Gb tape so it can
backup the server on one tape (for now).

On the upper right of your keyboard is a button with
an arrow or triangle on it. Plug everything in and
push that button.

Grr. I share your frustration. If I had one I was looking to sell, I'd be
happy to accomodate you. In fact, if you find one on eBay cheap, and want
me to be a shipping intermediary, contact me privately.

That's generally a bad sign. Try holding the option key on boot to see if
you get anything.

WTD: VideoVision for 840av and Lightboard qn

2002-07-08 Thread Rod

Hi All!

I am new to this list, but I do recognise 'the pickle' from when he was in
Perth, Australia last year (the WAMUG members say hi!).

Just wondering if anyone has a VideoVision lying around that they would like
to sell? I am currently 'restoring' a Quadra 840av back to new, and I am
trying to add as many options to it as I can.

I know there are a couple on ebay, but 99% of the time they won't ship
outside the US.

BTW, I have also procured a RasterOps Lightboard card. Do I need the
drivers installed first for the card to work, or can a I plug a monitor in
and get a basic resolution? The reason i ask is that I have no idea if the
card is working or not, as it is plugged in now and no video comes through.

Seeya

Rod!

There are no screws on the bottom that I can see. Unfortunately, I don't have
a service manual. If someone that does could give a quick look, that would be
much appreciated.

Thanks,

Been a while since I did this, but I think there are a couple screws below
the 5.25" tray that need to come out too. Might wanna consult the service
manual as well.

Quadra 950 disassembly

2002-07-08 Thread Ed Murphy

Hi All,

I'm trying to remove a syquest 44mb drive from my Q950 and replace it
with a CD-ROM drive. The problem is, I can't get the Syquest out.
I've mucked with the internal hard drive before, and it has a very
simple one screw assembly. It looks like the front accessible drives
have a similar mount, but I can't get them out after removing the
screw. Any clues? TIA

Re: Q950 Tape drive

The PDS card provides two "intelligent" SCSI buses for use by A/UX.

The internal one is 10 MB/sec; the external one is 5 MB/sec.

There is a cache RAM on the card. There is a CPU on the card.

The entire purpose of the card is to allow the 68040 on the Q950/WGS 95 to
continue processing A/UX while the CPU on the card completely handles the
disk accesses.

The card is only useful when running A/UX, however.

Under MacOS, the machine will have two usable SCSI buses. Under A/UX, the
machine will have four usable SCSI buses (but only the ones on the PDS card
are recommended for use).

Yes.
If it's working you will need "Retrospect" to run it.

It's a fast SCSI card.

Q950 Tape drive

2002-07-08 Thread Ian Moffatt

Hi all,

Just aquired a couple of Q950's. One has a tape drive and the other an Apple
Work Group Server PDS card.

Is the tape a viable option for backup?

What does the card actually do?

Cheers

Notes from Low End Mac

2002-07-08 Thread Dan Knight

Hello, subscribers.

It's July, and we'll soon begin work on a whole new setup for handling
the email lists. No more unexpected "did you really want to unsubscribe"
notices. A single full archive instead of two different ones. A web-based
front end for managing your subscription. It's going to be a big project
and make things a lot better.

For the record, we don't run the current list server; maclaunch.com does.
We have no control over the blacklist or many of the bounce messages. We
will have full control over every aspect of the lists when we move to our
new setup later this summer.

We've just launched our new headline news service, Apple Quicklinks
, this morning. We hope to grow it to the
point where it will rival MacSurfer.

If you're interested in digital photography, I finally completed an
article on picking the right digicam and posted it on Digigraphica over
the weekend.

Site finances continue to be well below budget. We've posted our plea for
support on Low End Mac today and remind those on the list that there is a
completely voluntary $1 per list per year suggested donation. If sending
funds via PayPal, please reference [EMAIL PROTECTED]
