Re: Mac monitor to a PC

2002-08-30 Thread Jonathan O'Connor

I found one at: http://www.cablesnmor.com/mac-to-pc.html for $18

Handy really as I have a spare Multiple Scan 720 monitor with no Mac to put
it on.

Not that I'm aware of. A while back, Radius did make a
15" Pivot Display that could do up to 8-bit (maybe
more) and you could swivel the display to view the
screen panoramically and in portrait views. Later,
they also came out with a 17" display.

Don't worry, you're not alone. iCab is the slowest thing I've ever
tried on a 68k. On my beige G it freezes up all the time. I'm running NS
4.08 Standalone on all my Macs. Small, fast and stable. Some pages won't
display properly though, and some makes it just quit on me. I go Opera 5 or
NS 6.2 then.

I personally have all sorts of troubles with iCab on most of my 68ks,
although I don't do a great deal of surfing on any of them. Freezes, random
crashes, various memory errors (the machines in question have >40 megs,
most 64+, of RAM with what should be more than enough allocated to iCab)

Whatever works for you though ;)

Hum... I was using iCab in both cases - one the ppc version the other 68K. So I
got compatibility that way :-)

John

P.S. I rather like iCab. Not sure though if it's just psychological - I like the
idea that somebody is still coding for 68K's..

Toast for 680x0

2002-08-30 Thread craig o'donnell

Well, now I've got that AWS 95 running, and I have an old SCSI CD
burner to connect to it, but no version of Toast which works on
non-PPC machines. Contacted their tech support and asked if they'd
send me a copy of v4 (I am a registered owner of 5.0 Lite and
Titanium, or whatever) but they claim not to have any copies; said
buy one from some individual.

Any leads from anyone who might have an obsolete copy?

Thanks pickle, I think I'll try that. I took the back off (that's a b*gger to
figure out) the one that was OK when warmed-up, and found that that stopped it
warming up enough to "gimmme some red". So I got my wife's hairdryer (!) and
blasted hot air at the CRT-end PCB. The red returned!

So you are right about the location of the problem and could well be right about
the solder joints. The only discouragement is the amount of de-soldering you
have to do to just *get* at that PCB :-( I think I'll take some pictures with my
digital camera so I can see how it goes back together. I guess this is why they
*don't* have a decent service manual.

BTW Did Apple ever make a Color Portrait Monitor? I always thought that the
Portrait monitor was a sensible idea. I don't understand why all monitors are
not made this way. Takes up less desk space and is more like the shape of a page
of paper. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone that has one.

Thanks for the help.

Cheers,
   John
