System 8.6 H-P 1200SE Memory Leak
Here's a question which relates to a PowerMac 6500, but I figure the Quadlist bunch may have some insights. Meanwhile, I'm off to ask on the early PowerMacs list as well. I have installed a D-Link USB board in a 6500 in order to connect an HP 1200SE laser printer. System is 8.6. Apple USB extensions are 1.4.1. HP driver is their HP LaserJet 1200 USB 1.3 with HP LaserJet 1200 PPD 1.0. Built in RAM is 96K. and Virtual memory is on (192M total). This is for a small Historical Society with virtually no technology budget, so going from an Epson P-O-S inkjet to the laser printer is a big leap. There are numerous small and annoying quirks with this printer but here are the two major headaches: 1. If a job (say, a web page) is sent to the printer while the Mac is connected via its external 56K modem to the web, the whole shebang apparently freezes. Mouse movement is possible but there is no response from any apps which are running. It may be that waiting 5 minutes or so would find the system again responsive but nobody waits that long. 2. Sometimes, for reasons which are obscure, it seems the printer doesn't wake up when a job is sent - no processing data light blinking - and again the system hangs. Forcing a restart causes the print job to print and the printer, having been whacked upside its pointy haid, acts normal until the next time... and 3 - mysterious to me - if the computer is not shut off overnight, when I come back in, the System has bloated itself to about 190M (all RAM plus VM) and nothing can be run until it's restarted. I've never seen this behavior on this computer before installing the HP software. I have a virtually identical setup (a Performa 6360) elsewhere which was used to test the D-Link USB board and printer before taking it all over to the Historical Society. I did not see any of these problems. -- Craig O'Donnell Sinepuxent Ancestors Boats http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~fassitt/ The Proa FAQ http://boat-links.com/proafaq.html The Cheap Pages http://www2.friend.ly.net/~dadadata/ Sailing Canoes, Polytarp Sails, Bamboo, Chinese Junks, American Proas, the Bolger Boat Honor Roll, Plywood Boats, Bamboo Rafts, c. _ -- Professor of Boatology -- Junkomologist -- Macintosh kinda guy Friend of Wanda the Wonder Cat, 1991-1997. _ --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses by friend.ly.net.] -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Problem w/LC 630, OS 7.5.5, comm slot modem
I've got a bunch of old LC 630 DOS Compatibles that I'm trying to get up and running with System 7.5.5 -- the last one Apple allows free distribution of. One a Quadra 630 with a PDS ethernet card, I have no problem at all getting on the network, but the LC 630s all have Apple branded Comm Slot ethernet cards. If I boot from an external OS 8.1 drive, I can network, but nothing I've tried (including Open Transport 1.1.2) lets me network with the Comm Slot card in System 7.5.5. This one has me stumped. Any suggestions -- besides investing in a bunch of OS 7.6.1 or 8.1 CDs? Re: Problem w/LC 630, OS 7.5.5, comm slot modem
From: Dan Knight [EMAIL PROTECTED] If I boot from an external OS 8.1 drive, I can network, but nothing I've tried (including Open Transport 1.1.2) lets me network with the Comm Slot card in System 7.5.5. I had a similar problem when I did a clean install of 7.5.5 on my Quadra 630 with Comm Slot ethernet card. Mine was not an Apple card though, there were no obvious manufacturer's marks on it. I couldn't get the ethernet card to work with the fresh system folder and of course I had thrown the previous system folder away already. My problem was solved when I checked the Mac Driver Museum's network page: http://www.macdrivermuseum.com/network.shtml I looked at the chips on the card, and the names of the drivers, and found a match. The biggest chip on the card said Sonic, and there was a driver from Sonic Systems. The installer recognized my card, and the day was saved. -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
