I have an Apple MultiScan 15, looks just like the one in the PDF, with the
exception that the monitor cable is not detachable. I am in the US.

Hmmm... Having just DL'd the 15 inch MS User Guide from Apple:

I notice that this depicts clearly a seperate monitor cable. Just like the
one I bought in the dear old Australia. And seeing as how this is a US User
Guide I can only assume Apple must have got it wrong if the pickle says
otherwise.

However, if you're correct, pickle, then I do apologize for perhaps posting
misleading information. To this I can only add, if those of you in the
States bought the "Apple Multiple Scan 15 Display" with a fixed monitor
cable, you are missing out on perhaps it's most lasting and worthwhile
feature, a *seperate* cable that can be used with *any* multisync 15 inch PC
monitor.

Or, you can run a Mac Plus Emulator on your PowerMac or PeeSea. I know this
doesn't help you with your new Quad though.

Does anyone know if there's a 68000 compact Mac emulator that would run on a
LC040?

Thank you. That works much better than a hard reboot.

I went to change this but the Apple Guide says "On your computer, 32-bit
addressing is always on (you can't turn it off)"
Anything else I can try besides finding newer programs that open my older
documents (Word, Excel, Works, in particular) I'll be looking for new apps
in a couple days, but not critial at this point.

Go figure. I found the MacTrans program like 2 minutes before you replied.
But the FAQ is quite useful and I'm going through it now. Thank you.

The LC 580 doesn't have a reset switch that's externally accessible, at least
not that I recall. However, cmd-ctrl-powerkey ought to restart it.

I bet 32-bit addressing is on, and they probably don't like 32-bit addressing
too much. With 8MB RAM, you can safely turn it off without any ill effect, but
if you ever upgrade the RAM, you'll want to turn it back on.

Hello

2002-10-15 Thread Justin Watson

Hi all. I was looking for info/help, and it looks like this might be it.

A little background: I used to use Mac's in school, in fact we had the first
Mac network in my school district back in 1989/90. It was a SE/30 as a file
server and Mac II's as workstations (about 20 of them if I remember
correctly). I've always been into computers and loved working with Macs in
particular.

I've recently (the last year or so) been wanting to get back into Macs but
money is quite an issue. But imagine my suprice when I found a LC 580 on
sale for $12! Needless to say, I didn't even hesitate. I managed to find
my old disks from high school and figured I'd see what I could get
working.

Here's the stats on this LC 580: 040 CPU with 8 MB Ram, IDE 346 MB HD.
MacOS 7.6.1 is preinstalled (but no disks for it). It's does not have a
CDROM but it does have a Network Card.

Since I'm very rusty on Macs I was wondering if anyone could point me in the
right direction on getting the most out of this.

A couple of things I've run into (but to be expected) is many of the
programs and such do not actually work. Some programs hang, forcing me to do
a hard reboot. I remember back in school we had and optional "switch"
mounted on the side of the Mac, but my search on the web for such for this
has not turned up anything. I'm sure I just don't know the proper name for
it, and was wondering if anyone knew what it was, and if it's available on
this Mac. Looking inside the Mac I did find a reset button of sorts, but
it's a bit hard to get to while the Mac is on. In the disks from school I
have MacOS 6.0.3 disks so that tells me most of these programs are from that
time frame.

The other thing I've found that some of the programs that do work, run
incredibly too fast (mainly some old games). I've not really looked into
this yet, but is there a way to slow these down?

I have one final question. Since it has a network card (and my hub sees it
when plugged in) I figured I could find a way to get it on my home network
(2 WinXP boxes with 5 port hub). However, everything I've found so far
require me getting some thing over to the Mac first. As I only have the disk
drive (SuperDrive, I believe, since it can read PC disks), How can I
transfer a program to the Mac? I've tried all kinds of variations for
conversion, etc., but no luck so far. This Mac has MacLinkPlus 8.1
pre-installed, but it appears that this is designed for documents only and
not programs. I found StuffIt 1.5.1 (shareware, expired by about 10 years,
lol)sit on my old disks, but this will not even see .sit files that I
transfer via a PC disk. I think it may be a hidden extention since the icon
is generic with letters "PC" on it. Not sure though.

As you can see, I've VERY rusty woring with Macs and would really like to
put this computer to good use. Eventually I'd like to max out the ram, get a
larger HD, and be able to get on the internet.

And pointers, info, or what not would be appreciated. Also, is there a
achive of messages sent to this list? I would imagine there's a lot of good
info in there.

Thank you much in advance for any information.

-J Watson

LC575

2002-10-15 Thread Sally Holland

I recently moved and when I tried to use my computer at my new place, I got this
message on the screen and then dialogue box that is white (blank) and the screen which
has no desktop icons appearing, then freezes. Please help. I need to be able to access
the Internet to apply for jobs. The only way I can access my files is to hit Shift
together with the Power button so that extensions are off.

The message that came on the screen when only the Power button is used is :
"There is not enough memory to load all your extensions. Either remove one or more
extensions from extensions folder or reduce size of RAM disk and/or Disj Cache in the
Memory Control panel then restart your Macintosh".

Before the move, the memory was fine to access Internet through a dial-up freenet. I
even had MacLink 11 which was great to translate PC docs. Now the computer tells me
that "there is not enough memory to open Netscape Communicator (8,500 k is
needed-approx.6,600 is available) It shows total memory to be 36 with 30 for software.
I have been putting everything I think is not crucial on back-ip disks but can't seem
to increase available memory.

I'd appreciate solution to this malfunction. Thanks.
Spiritus

Re: Mac to PC VGA adaptor

2002-10-15 Thread Kris Jones

The original sense pin scheme only supported a few resolutions, mostly wierd
ones used by Apple fixed-frequency monitors.

For VGA the closest you can get is the 14" Apple monitor, which is 640x480
but at 66.7Hz... which is 6.8Hz faster than the VGA standard (59.9Hz).

I forgot which machine you had, but machines/video cards older than the IIci
all have the old sense-pin scheme. The IIsi has the older scheme and the LC
has the newer one even though they came out at the same time. The new scheme
supports the VGA standard.

More importantly, the sense pin scheme is just basically a method of
connecting certain pins together on the DB-15 connector to tell the Mac what
kind of monitor is plugged into it.

So what the adapter is doing is connecting certain pins together to make the
Mac put out VGA signals (most likely VGA).

If your VGA adapter doesn't have any switches, there's not much you can do
about a rolling screen unless you have a V-hold knob.

If your VGA adapter DOES have switches you can play with different refresh
rates. If it is rolling it means the refresh rate is too fast. Try a lower
one. (Although if it's a VGA screen it should work at 59.9Hz, which is what
most switch-less adapters set the sense-pins for.)

Hope that helps!

How can I set another frequncy setting? The old and nearly unusable

Yeah - just resolder everything on the CRT-end PCB. You'll have to desolder
the shielding to get at it, but that usually fixes it.
