UDF Volume Access

2002-10-16 Thread Mike Wise

Hi

Is anyone aware of a freeware or shareware UDF reader that runs on OS 7.5.5.
I've looked at the Adaptec one distributed by Roxio (v1.04) but the docs say
it needs OS 7.6 and it didn't run on my system when I tried it. I have an LC
575 and am a complete Apple newbie.

Thanks
Mike

Your system only supports System 7.5 and up.

.hqx files are actually text files. They should be transferred using ASCII.
Text files use only 7 bits, I suppose that's the reason for the length
error.

Info correct? and corrupt files

2002-10-16 Thread Justin Watson

I finally got my mac networked to my PC through ftp! Yea! Now I can transfer
more than a floppy across. I also got Netscape 4.08 installed and working
but need to figure out proxy setting.

--

In my search for software I found "Apple Specs" but I'm finding conflicting
info. I was wondering how accurate the info in here is. According to the
Specs I've got this:
MAC LC 580
68LC040, 66Mhz CPU
32-bit, 33Mhz Data Path (Bus)
Max ram 52Mb in 2 72-pin SIMMs
Addressing Mode: 32-bit
Original System SW: 7.5
Supports: 7.5, 7.5.1, 7.5.3, 7.5.5, 7.6, 7.6.1*, 8.0
*currently installed

500 MB IDE HD (Apple System Profiler reports I actually have a 346.8MB HD)
Supports 2x CDROM (I currently do not have, but would like to get one)

Pickle: you recomended dropping back down to 7.1. Would that pose any
problems? And from what I've been finding, it most internet apps work on
7.5.5 and above. Since that is goal I've almost reached, would this still be
advisable? Upgrading the RAM is going to happen within a week or 2 and I'm
going to max it out (so I can turn off virtual memory). Would this be a
factor in the OS I run? Also in regards to the 32-bit addressing unable to
be turned off, would booting on a MacOS 6.x (on a floppy only) work for the
older programs? Or is the above supported OS's pretty much what I have to
pick from? Or using vMac would work?

With the HD being IDE, I could easily upgrade this to a larger HD (up to 2
GB I believe) but would it be worth it? I can see myself getting lots of
apps and such, but I can use my PC for storage (eventual goal: file
sharing/browsing).

--

My next question, if anyone is familiar with ftp and file transfering is
this:
I've got a basic, no frills ftp server on my PC, and I got Anarchie 1.40 on
the Mac. It seems to work great, but about half of the files I attempt to
transfer across I get an "Invalid Lenth (-23006)" error in Anarchie. It seem
to transfer bin files ok, (although a couple failed) but hqx file are not
working at all. I've got StuffIt on the PC as well, and it unstuffs them
fine, but the resulting files usually give the same error. For hqx files is
there something I'm missing for downloading them? Everything I've seen says
transfer as Binary and that's what I'm doing but I'm at a loss on this one.
Any advice appreciated.

Thanks in advance

J Watson

I've tried that too, but I didn't have the patience to see how long it was
going to take. I recall that it was also taking up a lot of disk space for
the converted file.

But it should be noted that MPEGDEC (the app that started this thread)
plays the MP3, but it does not convert to some other format. A separate app
is included to convert to AIFF.

I suppose I should always google before speaking.

"SoundApp can also convert MPEG files on a 680x0 Macintosh, although it

It looks like the author still supports the app, although there was a 2 year

An upgrade to 4.00d or whatever was the last 4.0 version should fix that, but
5.1a is much better if you must run Word.

I think I figured out where the setting "should" be, in control panel:
Memory, however, the only things I can change are Disk Cashe, Virtual
Memory, and Ram Disk. Am I in the right place? Or am I completely off?

Versions I have:
MS Word 4.00: gives error type 2 when run)
MS Excel: (unknown, no version listed and gives error type -199 when run)
MS Works 2.00a:(gives error type -1 when run)
GraphicWorks 1.0: gives error type 1 when run)
Think Ahead+ 1.2: freezes computer (no loss if I can't even remember what it
is I guess)
There are others, but the MS products are the one's I'd like to get to work,
or upgrade to a working version.

If I can get the 32-bit addressing turned off maybe these will work?

I'm seriously considering getting the Mac SE/30 that was being sold next to
this one, if it's still there, just to see what I can do (keeping this one
of course) :P

Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.

It may be that the PRAM has lost some of its settings.

Try Checking the memory control panel to make sure 32-bit addressing is
turned on.

Yep, been using it awhile on my Q840AV. Kinda neat, though a bit impractical.

Sounds like Apple Guide is on crack ;)

The ones I saw in Australia all had them.

MP3 player for 68k

2002-10-16 Thread Artur Yelchishchev

Hi all,

I'd like to share my recent finding:

===
MpegDec for Mac
http://members.aol.com/xanathus/mpegdec/about.htm

MpegDec is an MP3 (MPEG Audio Layer III) player for Macintosh computers.
It is a Macintosh port of Stephane Tavenard's excellent MpegDec MP3
decoder originally designed for 68k Amigas. Considering that the 68k
Amigas and 68k Macs share the same CPU, a fast port was possible.

It uses 68k assembly language optimizations and is the fastest MP3
decoder for 68k CPUs. It is closely related to Stephane Tavenard's mpega
library for the Amiga, which Amiga MP3 frontends like AmigaAmp use.

There are three versions; 68K (FPU), 68K (no FPU), and PPC.

System Requirements for MpegDec 2.5.3

68020 CPU or PPC (68040 or 68030 50Mhz recommended for realtime
playback; FPU is not required.)

Quicktime 2.1 (Quicktime 2.5 and SoundManager 3.2.1 recommended)

MacOS 7.0 with Drag and Drop 1.1 and Finder 7.1.3 (MacOS 7.5 and higher
recommended
===

WBR,
Artur
