FWIW, the best I could ever do with MI/X were the same error messages quoted
above.

I don't know where you'd find MacX. But do a Google search for info on
"eXodus 7.0", which IIRC was the final release to support '020 - '040 68k
Macintosh. It's an X-windowing system for Macintosh and is a commercial app.
which you can DL and try as a working demo (can be registered to make a full
app).

Version 7.0 is getting hard to locate, but I believe this is it here:
 - Note: 13 MB DL.

Apple System Profiler will tell you the make and model. Then off to
the mfgr's website to see what they claim it is.

TattleTech is supposed to do this. I don't know how reliable it is.

The mpegdec one works about as well as an mp3 player on a 68k will get, but
no, there aren't any that specifically use the AV Mac's DSPs. Would be nifty.

Success with SCSI is largely dependent on getting the SCSI ID and
termination set correctly. I'm sure there are others here that can help
with the specifics for the Apple CD.

You might also try running SCSI Probe. That would provide you with
information about the SCSI chain that might help you.

Re: CD ROM speed

2002-10-19 Thread Kris Jones
If they are all scsi you can use scsiprobe to find out what the model #s
are, and then cross-reference with the spec sheets on the manufacturer's
website.

For example:
I have an Apple-rom'd IDE cd-rom, it's made by Matsushita (Panasonic) and
it's model # is CR-589-B. I go to www.panasonic.com and look it up, and it's
a 32x. Sometimes they don't have the manufacturer's name on them, but apple
usually used sony or matsushita cd-rom drives.

Re: lost about external cdrom

2002-10-19 Thread Kris Jones
Is the a terminator on the external cd-rom?

Other than that, as long as each device has a unique ID (the internal HD
should be 0, the onboard scsi controller will be 7, cd-roms are usually 4)
everything should be configured correctly?

lost about external cdrom

2002-10-19 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hey all,

I'm having mass issues with my Quadra 700 and external
AppleCD 300 drive. I've played with every jumper
setting I can find, and the Quadra won't boot with the
CD-ROM connected. Sad to admit a custom PC is my
primary machine so I'm a little braindead about SCSI
stuff, so it might just be something I'm completely
overlooking. One of the problems I have had allowed
the Mac to boot but it wouldn't show the CD-ROM or the
interal HD, a Quantum Fireball ST 2gig. Other times
the computer will attempt to start OS (7.5) and just
freeze after the "Welcome to Macintosh" screen, but if
I turn off the CD-ROM it continues to boot. Anybody
have any suggestions?

CD ROM speed

2002-10-19 Thread Byron Gardner
Does anyone know of a software program that will tell me the speed of a
CDROM that is installed?

Is there a utility that will help me with this?

I do not want to tear into my Macs (4) and figure out which is which.
Besides, some of them don't have the speed on them.

Thanks,
Byron

Are there any programs for the 840AV to play mp3's?

I figured since it has a DSP, it would be able to offload something like
mp3 decoding from the CPU.
