memory upgrades

2002-11-23 Thread Jim Pendarvis
My son's school has a bunch of 5400s and a couple of 5500s.

Most have 16-32Mb installed. What is the maximum and what would be needed
to upgrade these?

thanks, jim

maclink plus and Excel

2002-11-23 Thread Jim Pendarvis
I mentioned in a previous message that I was recently given an OS8CD.

A couple of months ago, I desperately needed to read a couple of Excel
files. ClarisWorks 4 could not read those files. I tried to find a copy of
MacLink Plus, but couldn't get a version (not off the shelf anyway) that
would run on my Performa 575. Someone here suggested Appleworks 5 (which I
didn't have access to at the time). Eventually, I found a different
solution that took care of the problem. But the whole thing came back to me
when I saw MacLink Plus on the OS8CD. So I tried an experiment

The version of MacLink Plus that comes with Appleworks 5.0.3 (on a 5400 at
my son's school) is 9.7. It seemed to recognize the file, but all I got was
a blank spreadsheet. Then I tried MacLink Plus (version 9.0) from the OS8
CD. The FileView application told me that the Excel files were Excel 97 and
that they would be supported by MacLink Plus 9.7. But it seems those
translators must not have been included in the OEM version that shipped
with AW5. So I guess AW5 couldn't do it out of the box.

I ended up using icExcel . You can
view the file, print it, and/or save it in AW5 or AW6 format.

I,m not sure about the x,y compatability or name brands, but the 3.3 volt
is usualy CPU level voltage, the 5 and 12 can both come off of a power cable
spliter. The red and black wires should measure 12 volts on a VOM (volt/ohm
meter).

When the fan is running, make sure the air is blowing down at the heat
sink to cool it off. If not, you can either turn the fan over if possible
or swap the two power leads around to change the polarity going to the fan
by cutting the fans power leads and swithcing the red and black around. This
will make the fan turn in the opposite direction since it is a DC fan. If
you do this, make sure to solder the splice and tape it so it does not short
out inside the computer.

Tiny wood or sheet metal screws (screws that have a point on the end of
them, not machine screws) can be used to hold the fan to the heatsink. They
wedge themselves in between the vertical slots of the heat sink. Two screws
are enough to hold the fan to the heatsink. Any heatsink that covers the
chip will work. If there are not clips to hold the heatsink to the CPU, you
can use a thermal condutor grease to attach the heatsink to the CPU.

You can get heatsink, fan, and grease from a local electronic repair
supply house like Radio Shack. An electronic hobby shop would have the
parts for a better price though. I hope this helps!

OS8 (5400 and Performa 575)

2002-11-23 Thread Jim Pendarvis
I've been helping out in the computer lab at my son's school. They let me
bring one of their 5400s home to do some work for them. (They really didn't
have to do that, but then I didn't discourage them either since part of
what they want me to do is play with hardware and software that I haven't
had hands on experience with). Anyway, while cleaning up in the store room
I found an OS8CD, complete with installation manual, which they gave me to
keep for my very own.

I tried this CD on my Performa 575. It boots just fine. But on the 5400
(current OS 7.5.3) it doesn't. It crashes with an illegal instruction
error. It suggests trying again with extensions off, but that doesn't make
any difference.

I have booted the 5400 off of a TechTool Pro CD (7.6.1, 8.1, 9.1) without
problems.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

thanks, jim

68040 sized CPU fans

2002-11-23 Thread Dana Sibera
Apart from the whether a fan is really relevant on an 040... if I were
to put a fan/heatsink combination on one of my Quadras, what would be
the best to look for, by name/description? I've seen some shown
graphically in ebay auctions which would fit between a drive power
cable and take their power from there, and seem to be around 1/3 to 1/2
an inch high and roughly 4cm*4cm - something that could fit quite well
in even the pizzaboxies. The whole description of socket x or slot y
type compatible fans, 3.3 and 12 and 5v has left my head spinning
(aptly) :)

thanks!

LC 580

2002-11-23 Thread Mark Falzon
Does anyone know if you can put an LC 580 MB in an LC 520? Also, can you
use 32 MB 72 pin Simms in a laserwriter pro 630 printer. It seems like you
could use 32 MB Simms but only 16 MB would be recognized. I have extra 32
MB Simms to use, but no 16 MB.

Re: Mac II Needs Adoption

2002-11-23 Thread Dan Knight
This is a semi-automatic message from Dan, the listmom.

Thanks for posting to the list.

Please be careful not to quote *too much* of the original message (your
recent posting is quoted below) when replying to the list -- especially
the header and/or footer. (You're not being singled out; we send this to
everyone who does that, and we realize that many email programs do this
by default, so you may have to read the manual or help files to learn how
to change this.)

Thanks!
