Re(2): AAUI ?

2002-12-24 Thread Dan Palka
Made me giggle. I had one of these for about a year now and didnt even know
it. I always wondered why it had two ethernet jacks. Finally just about a
week ago I was trying to get my iBook networked with my Quadra 800 for a quick
file transfer, and I coulndt find my hub. Besides that, I only have one
ethernet cable anyway, so even if I did find my hub it wouldnt work. I was
getting very PO when I just randomly decided to plug the iBook into the other
jack on the Quadra. Low and behold it worked! Not only that but the other
jack is connected to a wireless bridge, which is connected to a broadband
modem. So all in all, its a great feature of this adapter, and saved me a lot
of troubles!

My adapter is a Farallon EtherWave AAUI adapter, and hub as well I guess. How
nifty.

Macromedia Dreamweaver 1.0

2002-12-24 Thread Dan Palka
Does anybody have any idea where I can still get ahold of a copy of the
Macromedia Dreamweaver 1.0 trial? The one that still works on 68k macs. I'm
very curious as to how Dreamweaver will work on my Quadra, especially now that
its upgraded.

If anybody has it or knows for sure where to find it that would be very much
appreciated!

Please don't tell me Macromedia I already thought of this - no can do.

Well I'll get that to you then in the next couple of days. Meanwhile you can

And to clear thi ngs up, yes it is the Centris 650 board with the QuadDoubler

That's the C650 board with quaddoubler, benchmarking faster than the

There are a lot that will read the gestalt ID; Apple System Profiler is
probably the most reliable at translating that to a machine name but it doesn't
work well on 68Ks unless you're running 8.1.

MacEnvy and TattleTech are great for extracting the gestalt ID, and putting
that along with "gestalt ID" into the search engine in the Apple knowledge base
will usually find everything you need on *any* Mac.

Early (i.e., pre-5) versions of the Adobe Photoshop installer, including
demo versions such as you might find on an old MacAddict CD or something,
install a fully functional Gamma control panel. (Vers. 5 has an Adobe
Gamma panel, which I think is probably PPC-only, since the program is, but
I haven't checked.)

2124NB II Nubus Graphics Card (Micro Conversions)

2002-12-24 Thread Ken Watanabe
(this is going to both 1st-PowerMacs and Quadlist since it applies to both)

I picked up a still shrink-wrapped "2124NB II" Nubus Graphics Card (made by
the now-defunct Micro Conversions) on eBay for a reasonable price. It has
some interesting features such as Zoom (zooms in/out on a portion of the
screen near the mouse cursor by hitting a hot key) and Pan (runs a bigger
"virtual desktop" and allows "panning" around it by moving the mouse to the
edge of the currently visible area). It also goes up to 1152x870 resolution
at millions of colors and does some hardware-based QuickDraw acceleration.

A LowEndMac page says it is compatible through Mac OS 9.0.4 (not with 9.1),
but that's not entirely true. The HARDWARE works in my Mac OS 9.1 PowerMac
8100 (with a NewerTech G3). However, the SOFTWARE (a control panel) causes
screen "artifacts" in some situations. Without the control panel installed,
the card seems to behave properly, but QuickDraw acceleration and the
Pan/Zoom features are not enabled (you still get millions of colors at up to
1152x870). The card's performance is noticeably slower than the PDS AV Card
that is standard on "AV" Nubus PowerMacs, even with QuickDraw acceleration
enabled on the 2124NB card.

The performance difference is likely to be more noticeable in my case
because my 8100 has a G3; on a non-accelerated nubus PowerMac running Mac OS
8.6 or 8.1 (or lower), the 2124NB would probably work quite well. I say
that because I put the card in a Mac OS 8.1 Quadra 700 (with a Daystar PPC
601). In that system (using either the 68040 or PPC CPU), everything seems
to work perfectly and the performance of the card nicely matches the
performance of the Mac.

Now, my Quadra 700 (with max vram) already has pretty decent built-in
graphics, but I think I'll leave the 2124NB in it for now. If I ever attach
a larger monitor to it, I'll be able to get 24-bit color at a higher
resolution and could even make it a "two-headed" system.

Happy Holidays!

- Ken W

The Pickle and I had a look over a QuadDoubler-type gadget (see below) last
summer.

QuadDoublers DO NOT have their own clock chips. They do exactly what the name
implies, double the clock speed (bus speed) of the main oscillator. They have
a little chip on them which effects this.

The only gadget I'm aware of with it's own clock generator is something made
by Newer Tech in the early 90's for the Q950, which will run that machine at
50 mHz. It has its own Motorola clock generator chip which is programmable to
1.33, 1.5, and 2.0 times the oscillator frequency. It also has what appears to
be its own on-board cache. The CPU has an integral cooling fan on its
heatsink. I have tried that in my 950, and it did boot and report a speed of
50mHz. However, I could not get it to run stably under OS 7.6.1. It brought up
all kinds of strange errors, bombs and hangs. Furthermore, the software that
came with it did not appear to function. I have always meant to experiment
with backing the OS down to 7.5 or 7.1, and putting scrupulously tested 60 ns
RAM in it, but this 950 is heavily used and I just haven't gotten around to
that project yet.

I've tried QuadDoublers in several different machines, with mixed results. I
have tried running one in my Q950, and it's not a matter of overheating: the
thing won't even start up. You just can't get that thing to run at 66 mHz. It
will work in a Q700. I even put it into a Q605 for grins, and it worked OK
there, though you couldn't close the case back up. It was kind of neat playing
Doom II for an hour or so on that 605 cooking along at 50 mHz.

I was glad to read of Dan's success with his 'doubler. I share his mixed
feelings, though. It seems to me that the performance bump you get from these
things is not worth the trouble or expense of dealing with them. If you can
get one cheap (under $30-40) and don't expect miracles, go ahead. But the fact
is that you can get a PPC upgrade for most Quads for $60-80 on eBay and really
get a performance boost. In my opinion, the QuadDoubler is not much more than
a curiosity.

Not so fast. Sun released a sbus le card that had aaui. I have one of these
cards. When I first saw it I thought it must have been a fluke. But from
the looks of it if you had an all apple network you could obtain it.

Who knows what the hell they were thinking :-)

For history sake I can digi-cam this and show it off.

Other manufacturers were not above creating their own connectors. Qec cards
also had the infamous MII connector.

Apple, for reasons of conservation of backpanel space, elected to use its own
version of the AUI, and it (Apple), quite naturally, dubbed this equivalent,
but different interface, the Apple Attachment User Interface, or A-AUI.

Among several differences are the AUI's largish DB-15 connector, with a
single sliding bail, and the A-AUI's micro-miniature 16 pin connector, with a
double latch.

Also, the AUI requires +12 and +5 volts from the host, whereas the A-AUI,
being designed also to accommodate the realities of PowerBooks, requires +5
volts only.

 From Apple Knowledge Base:

Earlier computers

Earlier Power Macintosh and Quadra computers have the Ethernet icon, as
in Figure 1, but with a different style of port. This is the Apple
Attachment Unit Interface (AAUI) port. This type of port requires a
transceiver, a small box that adapts the AAUI to the type of cabling
used (such as RJ-45). On Power Macintosh computers that came with both
an AAUI and RJ-45 port, you can use only one at a time.
