html debate

2003-04-04 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
>There's a HUGE difference between writing IE-specific
code and writing standard HTML that's compatible
across all browsers.

Pickle is completely accurate in saying this. Way back
when we got our first PC, I used FrontPage Express,
and most things screwed up in Netscape but worked
completely the way I wanted in IE, even simple things
like marquee text. (Remember, this was in the days of
3.x browsers and the very new IE/NS 4.0) Microsoft
tries to be the standard, as opposed to using the
defacto HTML standard. I've even read articles on how
Microsoft server software communicates with it's own
browser differently than others, especially those on a
Macintosh. HTML is standard and should be across
platforms, but IE uses it's own specific code at times
and it will be displayed terribly if at all in any
other browser. Not to mention that M$ HTML software
adds a huge amount of garbage to the document.

I also agree this is off topic and should be discussed
elsewhere, but if it's gonna be clogging my inbox I'm
going to stick my two cents in.

chooser wierdness

2003-04-04 Thread Sque

Hi folks.

One of my Centris's (C650) has devoloped a problem with the chooser.
Upon selecting the chooser, it opens and instantly tries to connect to
the hard drive one of my other machines, no real big problem except the
mac its trying to connect to isn't on the network at the moment.
Everthing else works fine.

Canceling only reopens the login window again so the only way I can
leave the chooser is to force-quit.
Ive tried other choosers and looking for a chooser.prefs file and have
also deleted the invisable appletalk.pds (most likely the wrong file
name) file and zapped the pram and rebuilt the desktop, to be honest I'm
out of ideas.

After hooking the machine named Q700 up to the network and trying the
chooser on C650 still brings the login window up but now I can logon to
the drive that the chooser demands. Close the chooser, put away the
Q700's disk, restart the C650 and go back to chooser only results in the
same problem again.

Any suggestions as to what I've over looked or a fix for this little
problem short of reinstalling?

Mark, many of us use other machines to read this list, drop in and I'll
be more than happy to shout you or any other member that beer are
whatever poison your into.

Cheers

HTML - SMLHTMLzzzzzz

2003-04-04 Thread mark
One of you is saying its bad to use IE specific HTML, the other is saying
you should code so that it at least works in IE.

Is it just me or that two different subjects? : )

And as an aside where did all the attitude come from sooo fast. Time to have
a beer and relax IMO.

Also as further aside, I also read this list on a PC, are there many others?
I'd do it on a Mac except I don't have a mac modem for my quadra (hurrah
back on topic) or my 9500 (booo hisss off topic again) : )

Yes, on one of my back up cds. I have no idea what version it is, but it's
from my Q800 days in 99/00, so some 3 years ago it was still available for
download at the Real Player site.

It worked fine, with everything from an 28.8 k modem to ISDN single line,
but at that time it was getting harder and harder to find web sites with
Real Player files old enough to work with it, assumably it's even harder
now.

Re: Where to buy memory

2003-04-04 Thread Dave Lee

Yes that is true for sure. How many *professional* web developers do you know that
use MS Front Page for web development?? I think Dreamweaver and more recently
GoLive are the tools used in most cases.

But my question is, who develops web pages that will work on a Compact Mac with a 1
bit display?

Call me insane but I want to get on the web with my SE/30. And I want to know which
web pages will work on an SE/30s. Anyone already do this?

I don't think you quite understand what we're saying. There are HTML
standards set that are *supposed* to be followed by both web designers and
software developers. Microsoft thinks they know best and that certain
standards should be changed or supplemented. So they add things to IE that
are not HTML standards but will display correctly for you if you happen to
be using IE. Web sites that are "designed for IE" usually include some kind
of proprietary Microsoft HTML type stuff that will display perfectly in IE,
but will NOT display in OTHER browsers. It isn't a matter of not
functioning in IE or not, since in theory, everything will, but not being
able to display in other browsers such as Netscape or even stricter iCab is
what makes a web site "designed for IE" looked down upon. These sites tend
to be created by PC users who are oblivious to the fact that there are other
operating systems, other browsers, and real standards that they should stick
to.

This is also the reason why I never use any Microsoft branded product for
HTML generating (such as FrontPage, or MS Word) because some of, actaully a
lot of the things they generate look really crummy in Netscape and others.

then you're ignoring 90% of the web! You're living in a Dreamworld if you ignore
