I am not sure what you can do with MacOS, it has been too long. Here's an idea
though: one option would definitely be NetBSD running samba and cups. There
may be a linux variety that runs on mac 68k too but I can't recall.

[q] Use Apple LWIIg as network printer for PC lab?

2004-08-19 Thread Jim Raper
Hi, Y'All,
The LCII/LC580 classroom network is gone.
In its place, a PC lab. I have been asked if I can figure out how to use
the old Apple LWIIg workhorse as the network printer for the 20 PC's.
Can it be done?

Of course it has to be done with little or no new money.
Thanks. Jim

[q] LC 580 wierdness (good news, bad news?)

2004-08-19 Thread Julian Wolfe (FireflyST)
Well, I just pulled my brand new old stock LC-580 out of the box, and I found out some
good and bad things about it:

1. I cannot boot from any of 3 original Mac OS 8 CDs, two are 8.0, one is 8.1.
However if I boot from a Disk Tools diskette, it is fine. If I try to boot from CD, I
get a sad mac, error "001 00F" (this is with one single banked SIMM installed,
for a total of 8mb) The only thing I can figure is the clock battery being dead,
which it is.

2. This thing will take WAY more than 52MB of RAM I currently have 100MB installed,
and both are double banked SIMMs. I don't see any kind of instability whatsoever.

Can anyone explain either of these phenomena?

Thanks!
Julian

Amen to that...I find myself fiddling with hardware for its own sake, simply because

Ha! Isn't it funny how often we let ourselves think a surfeit of video RAM
and dual G5's (or whatever the latest & coolest thing is) will make us
better writers! I've found the opposite generally to be the case--the more
awesome computer junk I have, the more time I spend fiddling around with it
for its own sake, and the less time conjuring words. My LC 475 remains as
full of poetic potential now as it was when I was amazed with it in college.

May the best of inspiration be yours.
