I dunno nothing about that, but John Wang's AV FAQ
www.sims.berkeley.edu/%7Ejwang/cgi/av-faq/> alleges that the AV
Quadras
are perhaps better at digitising audio than the 1st generation
PowerMacs,
such as the 6100:

The 660av and 840av [...] provide 16-bit stereo
sound input and output, with sampling rates of
22.050, 24.000, 44.100, and 48.000 kHz. Found in AV
and non-AV Power Macs alike, the Audio Waveform
Amplifier and Converter (AWAC) chip performs nearly
the same 16-bit I/O functionality, but with the
22.050 and 44.100 kHz sample rates only.
Wang also says that his FAQ does not attempt to include G3 PowerMacs
in
its purview:

This FAQ does not directly cover Power Macintosh G3s
with the AV Personality card...
That's all the direct answer to your question that I can provide. In
the
FAQ you can read Ben Denckla's more detailed analysis of the audio
capabilities of these machines.

And then:
I'm in the process of digitizing all of my old
record albums and I want the best setup I can have
for ease of use and quality.
When you're through with that, can you come over to my house and

Thanks for the info Michael, I'm getting the quality I want from the
PC setup, it's just that I thought maybe there was some Mac software
which would perform this function as well or better. I have well over
half of my albums done now, some digitized via my trusty old Fisher
turntable and PC and some I've been able to grab from the Newsgroups
which cater to people like me by posting entire albums for download.
I use MT Newswatcher on my B&W G3 to peruse the
alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.1950s - 2000s groups. I picked up 3-4 albums
just this evening by checking just the 1960s and 1970s groups. Using
broadband it doesn't take very long to download an album, even at the
higher bitrates. This is much, much easier than doing each one by
hand. Plus there have been some of my older stuff that was in too bad
of shape to get a good copy.

I have friends here in the area where I live that have made the same
request for assistance in converting their collections, but I doubt I
will ever try to tackle a job like this again, if I ever get my own
finished!

Just a message from Doug...

Hi

Ok then anyone UK based want a set of 4 matching 512k vram sims for a set of
4 256k vram sims.

Also Pick could this explain why my 840 has slowed down to a crawl. I get no
errors on the Mac and it is stable as a rock but thing's are taking twice as
long as they were just last week.

Hi

I have arranged them in every order I can and the speckels stay the same.

As for the chips. The exact writing/number on the chips is
OKIJAPAN
M548262-70
4432202

ON THE OTHER SIDE IT HAS 1994 MADE IN USA CUBIG INC VM 512K

These were working fine up until the other day and they only have 2 x chips
on one side.

Hi Pick thanks for that but like I said I have tested the vram in other macs
and it works fine.

The sticks I have are 4 x 512k vram chips and also 4 x 256k vram chips all
work fine in my other macs.

840 av

2003-02-28 Thread victoria
Hi all

Question time again.

My 840av has developed a problem. (this is the problem)

When I set my monitor to millions of colour's no matter what res it is on I
get a speckeled part on the screen about a quarter of the screen size.

If I want to loose the speckels I have to set it to a max of thousands of
colours and in no higher res than 832 x 6xx!!!

!!Is this the vram slots gone bad on the board and if so how can I fix it? I
have checked the v ram simms and they work perfect on my other macs a 800
and a 7100/80.

Also my 840 has slowed down to a crawl I have not installed anything new and
clean out the hdd with Norton once a month, but nothing helps.

Specs are

840 AV
96MB RAM USING RAM DOUBLER 1.5.1
1 X 1GB HDD
1 X 2GBHDD
1 X 500MB HDD
1 X APPLE 12X CD ROM
FLOPPY
EXTERNAL SCSI SCANNER(APPLE)
EXTERNAL LASER PRINTER AND HP DESKWRITER 550C
CONNECTED UP TO A 1705 MULTISYNC
GV 33.6 ADB POWERED MODEM FLASHED TO 56K
RUNNING 8.1
OFFICE 4.2.1
PHOTO SHOP 4
AND OTHER APPS
LIKE I SAID EVERYTHING WAS FINE THEN WHEN I TURNED IT ON THIS MORNING snail
pace??

I do have a back up but it is a 800 and I use the 840 most for video's

Please any suggestions.

TIA Vicki.

Hi NO I DID NOT! mention anything about any other Mac I asked if there was
any better app than apple video player to render video.

As it happens I do transfer the files via ethernet to my Ibook then burn
them to cd but this is a Quad list and the ibook part is not the part I
wanted to know about,

It was the 840 AV involvement to capture the raw video from camcorder.

Anyway to put this thread to bed now I have received a lot of advice off
list about things to do so Thanks to all that sent me the bits .
