You may not need one for your own computer, but if you acquire other
people's Macs you should either wipe their hard drives from a locked
startup disk or run Disinfectant, which is free and works fine for me
through Mac OS 9.1. A small portion of the old Macs I've been getting
were infected with some of the viruses that Disinfectant blocks.
www.pure-mac.com is a good directory of Mac software where you can find
Disinfectant.

Well you really don't need a Virus Scanner, I have not found a Mac Virus in
15 years now.

That said there are two that I would recommend:

First there is the free application known as Disinfectant, this is for Macs
running OS 7.6.1 and earlier, I am not sure if it works on 8.1 it might. It
also comes with an Extension called Disinfectant INIT {or something like
that}, it will take care of any of the old viruses that your old Mac could
get.

You can download Disinfectant I think, or I can send you copy of it assuming
that you have looked and haven't been able to find it.

For your newer Macs running 8.6 and newer, I would get Virex 6.1, this is
what I have. Not sure where you can find it, it is commercial.

Well, there are a few different ones avail for Mac.. I've had
experiane with Vireux.. But what you will find with macs, is the threat
really isn't out there, like that of the Windoze world.
If you are running broadband, your modem and or router should have a
hardware firewall on board that should take care of everything for ya..
